MH not being tendered. Stuck with him through the injuries, and now letting him walk. He seemed good every time that I saw him play. Somebody will sign him.

Probably lose Holt, and letting MH walk doesn't make a lot of sense.

OK.

I am surprised, especially given the quality of the Sox middle infield and utility options. But I guess Cherington and Dombrowski thought more of Marco Hernandez than Bloom does, and this looks like a case of the roster spot being more valuable than the player...

We now have 6 open roster spots, so it appears Bloom has quite a few moves in mind, all of which seem like better options than Marco, to him.

Death penalty, here.

Obviously. Everything has the death penalty in Texas, including parking violations.

Parking in a handicapped spot calls for an immediate assembly of a firing squad.

With Johnson and Hernandez now off the 40 man and Leon in Cleveland, I think the sox might be in the market for Rule V players this year

Unless GMs view the 26th roster spot as an opportunity, I hope not. The Rule 5 draft is the dumbest way to acquire a player.

The Sox have 6 open roster spots, but Bloom is an infrequent participant in the Rule 5 draft. I believe he’s only done it once...

The Rule V is a free way to try and find players who are close to major league ready. It is also a way to penalize deep systems. It is literally free

To be precise, the acquiring team pays the other team $100,000:

On Wednesday, teams had to decide which of their prospects merited placement on 40-man rosters. Unprotected prospects are subject to the Rule 5 Draft at the Winter Meetings if they signed by age 18 and have completed five pro seasons, or if they signed at age 19 or older and

I know what it is.

But most of the players taken are NOT MLB-ready. So what it really is is a method of giving away a year of service time and development to a minor league player at the cost of a roster spot in hopes that it doesn’t burn you later.

It’s really works best if teams just complete a trade for the player selected...

With our roster depth looking weak- both the 26 and 40 man, keeping a non-ML ready player in that extra 26th slot might be worth a gamble.

The Sox might be in a position to get someone pretty good, though, as they’re not in the high 20-30 range. There’s usually 1-2 players who stick per year

If the Sox make trades, it’s ok. But wasting a roster spot and a year of service time is great for the player, but not so much for the team. And since almost all of them spend their claiming year on the bench, they lose a year of development, too.

Finding a pitcher and burying him in the back of the bullpen for a 40-50IP role might be ok. Maybe. But most players get returned, and a ridiculously small percentage pan out.

I’ll take trades and free agency over the Rule 5 draft...

While true, that selling point is less than encouraging...

The Sox have no money to spend and a crappy farm system. Rule V likely brings in a player who would land in the Sox top 5 in prospects and places them on their big league roster. I do wonder if Chaim looks at the task ahead and decides to grab the best 2b, 1b, CFer, starter or reliever available and rolls with it unless something more appealing comes to pass later in the offseason.

Osich was re-signed too.

Speier: "The decision to non-tender allowed greater flexibility in contract structure (I.e., split major/minor league deals) for players expected to offer depth. Osich has a split contract, with the LHP set to make $850K on the major league component of the deal."

The Sox farm system might not be very good, but let's be realistic here. There were several minor leaguers I thought fit that bill (Ona, Cronenworth, Fox, for example), and all of them were added to a 40 man roster. Bloom probably had a better list, and I bet saw the same thing happen.

Oh, I agree, but our unique situation and the roster being expanded to 26 next year might change the equation enough to make a go at rule 5.

I would look at Rule 5 guys that might be blocked on the Major League Roster. You really have to study and work. As far as a Pitching keep it simple, Look for Kids to Innings Pitched to Hits to Walks. You can find, just need good evaluations.

Would say if you are interested in one say at 1st base for example, I want to see Progress throughout his Minor League Career, but just not the talent to over come one at the Major League level.

Playing in Fenway, might be the difference on certain batters and their swings.

If I was going to look at Pitching, I would look at the PCL. The launching Pads in Parks there, its hard to really know if they have true stats in that League.

I would look at HR's. and Home Park he pitched in.

Stay away from Minor League Pitcher in Pitcher friendly parks. Like Pawtucket and that whole league.
