footwork is required but is an easily learnt skill. hence why WTF! should have him spend the past offseason and ST working on it. we shall see if it happens this season. i suspect it will.

Plenty of players learn it. These guys all have a talent for baseball that we cannot understand.

Even the worst player in MLB is still better at baseball than any of us are at anything...

exactly. so you agree that JD should take some reps at 1b this spring?

If the only other 1B are guys named Chavis and, say, Matt Adams, sure. Why not?

If Devers or a slightly lesser player is at 1B, I'm willing to let him play the outfield for the 6-7 games the Sox play in NL parks...

OK. i am not even stating for fact that JDM should play even 1 reg season game at 1b. but he 1MILLION percent should take some off season/ST reps at the position to see if it is a possibility.

If your boss is paying you 23 million dollars to play a damn kid's game, you'd better be flexible. I looked up Martinez' entire professional career on baseball-ref; in his first year in the minors, at age 21, JD actually played four games at first base. He made 2 errors and never played there again.

There's gotta be something holding JD back, besides personal preference, from even trying on a first baseman's mitt. It could be his back. Or his front. Or management has seen him in practice and determined he's just not an option.

JD has proven frail in his career and this year some back issues crept in. Putting him in a spot where he will need to be nimble AND be in a crouch for every pitch isn't going to be his friend. If you want to win, you park JD on the bench when your team is pitching and just sit back and watch the magic when he swings the bat

If JD is "frail" then half the Yanks are extremely frail.

If JD is frail, then Judge and Stanton are corpses.

Maybe they are the Zombie Apocalypse?

I respect you both but am I wrong in thinking they would be better served to just burn all his mitts ?

I am not looking for JD to become our everyday 1B or even a platoon player. Not even looking for him to play 1/4 of the games there. He reportedly likes playing in the field, and Cora seems to want to appease him in that regard. I'd rather have him playing at 1B than playing in the outfield.

If playing the field was that important to him, he could have opted out. I’m not so sure he minds the limited DH role...

He knows his back is acting up. Maybe, deep down, he thinks DH'ing will lengthen his career, keep him healthier and make more money.

And keep the man from ripping that uniform off his back, as they say...

By saying he’s frail, I’m not pointing out anything you guys don’t know. He’s had a foot issue that he seems to have conquered. He then had a back issue that he worked through. My point with JD is, what’s his upside? Is he gonna be a great defender? Will being on defense cause a greater chance of injury?

Will DHing lead to a greater chance of hemorrhoids?

I respect you a lot, jacko, but your team just had the most injuries in the history of the world, yet somehow our players are all fragile.

I’m going off of the cues you guys are laying down. You don’t want him in the field because he gets hurt. I get it. Your upside by putting him in the field isn’t there. Let him DH only. He’s an elite DH. No need to fit a square peg in a round hole

Jax he’s a butcher in the field .The guy may hit 60 if he’s just concentrating on hitting .

Perhaps, but I think his decision not to opt out was largely based on what he thought his market would be. Also, I think he is happy with the Red Sox because Cora allows him to play the field fairly regularly.

If it were up to me, he'd strictly DH. I don't foresee that happening with the Red Sox. Cora will allow him to play in the field. That being the case, I'd prefer he played 1B over playing in the outfield.

To be specific, what Scott Boras thought the market would be compared to his current salary...
