If Bloom can do what he did in TB with the money saved, and we get some key pieces by trading Betts (and maybe others), and then we bring Betts back, the rebuild might just be one year!

:)

Im in that camp myself .Hope that we hear tonight about JDM I’m getting anxious already.

To me, it hardly matters. I think we trade him, if he stays, and we won't get much for him, so it's not such a big deal.

If he has any trade value, he should probably be opting out, yes?

Well, he might have trade value only if we kick in some cash.

The idea of being dealt off is not appealing to a player of JD's stature. He would just as soon choose his own destination than have it chosen for him, especially if the money could be a wash or even a positive if he opted for freedom

I guess it’s not about JDM it’s about the road they are going down JDM is the first Domino to drop .Next would be JBJ and then Mookie getting Dealt.I just want my burger fast .

This whole 5 days after the WS thing is f***ing stupid. It is meant to allow teams and players on world series winning or losing clubs to decide their fates with enough time after the champagne stops flowing. Well, Strasburg probably still smells like bubbly and he already opted out. These guys are savvy enough to know on Oct 1 whether they're opting out or not. You don't need 5 days after the ASB

Well said bud .I think This whole deal should last 6 weeks tops .The off season was something to cherish for us diehards ...but now it’s just torture and tedium.Cant wait for spring training and see who we trot out there .

Does JD's opt out clause for next year along with the 23+ mill for next year the thing that lessens his trade value more than you wd think it wd be given his prowess. The guy sure can help a lot of AL teams--a lot.

as to the leagues 5 day delay, I appreciate it, and Strasburg did respect by waiting 4 full days. The rule adds class all around.

So the players whined and whined about not getting their big offers sooner, etc. The owners proposed a moratorium on long term FA deals 2 weeks after the conclusion of the winter meetings and the players balked. I thought the owners proposal was great. AND it actually HURTS the owners. Think about it. There is a soft deadline for most FAs and that's spring training. When the owners can wait a player out into the season, they gain leverage. The player wants to play. This would have essentially set a hard deadline on multi year FA deals. So the players lost a lot of credibility in this by refusing to give a little to get a little

Well, today is the day...any last-minute predictions? Gun to my head, I think he stays for one more year, but I'm by no means sure about that...

I've really been hating and dreading the Sophie's Choice the FO seems to have set up between Mookie and J.D., but at least after today we should have some small bit of clarity on what shape the rest of the offseason might take.

That's probably why he struggled so much in Arizona and was hated there for it...

If we can get a quality starting pitcher in return, yes.

But any team acquiring a DH on a short (potentially one year) deal might be a little hesitant to part with a quality starting pitcher, as both Martinez and said pitcher will be expected to be integral parts of a pennant run...

In fact, JD has both options. If he does not like where the Sox trade him, he can opt out after 2020...

Just judging by JD's words at the end of the season -- "I kinda like moving around" -- it sounds like he'll be leaving... unless he was just posturing for a raise in Boston.

But then again, his contract calls for more money this year, making an opt out next offseason more likely... unless he's got a team courting him on the sly for a better deal.

JD also said, "Everyone already knows who's going to make the playoffs" last spring, and "Everyone knows they can't afford Mookie"... which is opposite from the camp that implies Betts may just want to work elsewhere.

The fate of the two stars may not be connected after all; Merloni, a media member who would seem to be more informed than most as an ex-teammate of Sox employees like Varitek and Pedro, complained at the lack of trade deadline action that this was "Mookie's last year" and later gave odds he'd be traded as "90%". Ominous words when juxtaposed with Sam Kennedy's: "We need to know if Mookie wants to stay in Boston by this offseason." Or else?

I'm leaning toward the idea of JD staying and Mookie being traded to an NL team before the 2020 season. I hope I'm wrong, except for the NL part, because I can't stomach the idea of watching Mookie play in Fenway against the Sox.

Alternately we get one more glorious year of both of them in our lineup. If we aren't contending by the trade deadline, then trade Mookie. If we are, then hope for a championship before he sails off somewhere else.

Jake Arrietta and Kenley Jansen have declined their opt out clauses. As has Rusney Castillo is what will undoubtedly be the least surprising move of the entire off-season.

No word yet from JDM...

He's making us wait again, just like before he signed!

I thought the deadline was 5 pm and was looking forward to some news by the end of the work day, at least, but Speier reported that it's actually midnight...which (given the way this seems to be getting dragged out to the last minute) likely means a few additional hours of waiting.

Maybe there are discussions going on about an extension or sign and trade.

Jeff Passan just tweeted that JD will not opt out. If true that is a surprise to me. I thought he would Peter Abraham confirms that JD will not opt out.
