Jeff Passan just tweeted that JD will not opt out. If true that is a surprise to me. I thought he would Peter Abraham confirms that JD will not opt out.

If true, I'm glad to hear it.

I hope he doesn't get traded.

I feel better knowing we have JD, Xander and Devers.

It just makes more sense for JD to opt out after 2020 season. AND if he gets injured, he's still protected for 2021 season and then he can opt. Good to options.

I am with you. If Sale Price and Eovaldi are healthy, this team contends with a couple of minor additions. I want Bloom and Co not to practice "preemptive capitulation". Go for it until it you are obviously are out of it.

Agreed. I now just hope the FO doesn't trade him away. That would be right up there with trading Arroyo.

If our starting pitchers are healthy, I don't see anyway that our team is not highly competitive in 2020. We have too much talent remaining on the team.

Let's not get too excited here .I think it may be he still gets dealt

At least we know he won't be going to the Yankees.

I think there is a good chance that they trade JDM to Texas or the White Sox if they really want to get under 208 Million. I hope they don't. With him, they will be very competitive depending on what they do with Mookie. JBJ and Pedey make 24.75M between them. Geez! Wish they could get out of those. JBJ almost certainly is gone while Pedey will stay and collect his.

I can't see them dealing their best hitter. They'd have to get a nice haul for that to happen.

Teddy I'm not happy about the team paying a DH 23 million .I can be happy for you folks who wanted to retain him .Im saddened by it at this point .

Reportedly JD won't opt out so he is locked in for 23.75m this season.

Honestly it would have been difficult to find a replacement player for JD Martinez but this also makes things more difficult financially.

Where will the salary cuts come from?

Bloom has his work cut out for him. In a perfect world we would ship off some other salaries and still keep Betts. But I'm not sure how Bloom will pull that off now. If he can, he'd be in my early running for executive of the year.

Looks like Notin nailed it!

Honestly, it was the easiest prediction ever.

However, I’m only halfway there, as I am on record in a dozen or so posts as to saying he WILL opt out after 2020...

.

But only a $21mill AAV.

Now if he does opt out next year, the average value of his 3 year contract in Boston does go up. Does MLB retroactively adjust this for luxury tax implications from 2018 and 2019?

I'm still thinking he'll be traded, but it's not a slam dunk, especially with all these rumors of Price or Eovaldi deals in the works.

If they trade Betts (ugh) and Eovaldi and non-tender Bradley, that puts them where?

They might as well trade JD and Price, at that point. Then, go for broke in 2021, hopefully by re-signing Betts and others.

You know, it is possible to field a winning team without Bradley or Betts. Possibly even a championship team if the right moves are made.

Two words: Mookie trade.

JD back means Mookie likely isn’t...

We will not get much for 1 year of Mookie. This will not happen, especially in light of Kennedy's statement that the organization wants to keep Mookie for the long term.

Which is why it makes sense to keep Mookie and trade JD and Price OR Eavoldi. Bradley = gone. That should get the Red Sox under. Though, they will have little room to get anything done and I'm not sure where they are going to find SPs.

Maybe you shop Benintendi for a young starter, see what you can get for him. Alternatively, the Red Sox have a couple of valuable trade commodities in Chavis and Dalbec.

I think the Red Sox should shop Betts, but if the offers aren't there, you keep him and let him play out his final season for the Red Sox.

A700 I understand what your saying but can’t the Redsox and his agent offer a window in a negotiation for an extension ? JD or Price may have a list of teams they arewilling to sign with other than Boston

His contract will keep many teams from even calling, but I think we can get a nice haul for Betts. He's more than worth $28M/1.

Problem is, you can't really replace Mookie Betts, whereas you can replace JD Martinez. Betts is a two-way player, whereas Martinez doesn't help you with run prevention. If the Red Sox trade Betts, they are truly punting on the 2020 season. If they trade Martinez and keep Betts, the Red Sox can still be really good in 2020. They just need to find a little extra offensive production from a few different positions. If you trade Mookie, you hurt the team's offense, defense, and base running, and there is no way to make up that production.

I could see this lots of smoke on the Texas side .

One website estimates Mookie Betts' worth at $76.3 million for the one remaining season:

https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/

... for a surplus value of $51.4 million.

Harmony I wouldn’t pay the Rocket in his prime that never mind manny or Teddy Ball game ....love Mookie but come on now .Lets be real here Mookie is what a team is willing to spend and only that .Some team like The white Sox May give him 35 a year ? Let them .

That's what I'm thinking too. And from a selfish viewpoint trading Mookie makes it more palatable (and smarter) to keep JBJ.
