I agree with most of Jax' assessments of JD's impact on pitchers as a presence and teammates as a batting mentor. Every team uses ipads for everything now, but JD seems like the first player we really heard about with video analysis on every swing, in games and daily BP. I have to wonder if new management -- always looking for the next edge -- is ready for a slight shift in hitting philosophy... the '19 Sox had an ugly record of eight batters with over 100 strikeouts! I know it's modern MLB, and there's no going back to 1975 -- when Rice was the only Boston 100-K man. But even the '13 Red Sox only had three... Edited by 5GoldGloves:OF,75

JD was more than just a force. He also taught a lot of your hitters how to be a professional baseball player. What he does to ensure his swing is perfect is obsessive and takes an inordinate amount of preparation and time. He was willing to teach that method to his compadres and it helped everyone around him. His loss would be catastrophic for your offense, especially knowing that Betts is gonna hit the open market and could get away as well. There are mashers and there are guys who hit for average. You don’t see a lot of guys who hit for a great average also homer 30+ times a year. He’s unique. Losing him will make your offense far, far less concerning IMO as a Yankee fan

Jacko is straight on point here. We can't afford to lose JD. If we do , it will be 2017 all over again

We can't afford to lose JD and we can't afford to lose Mookie.

But we've been virtually assured we're going to lose one of them

Makes me hate the Sale extension all the more.

If he goes there will be trouble...if he stays it will be double.

The Sale extension was a leap of faith .I can’t be angry about it .JDM needs to be traded in the next 48 hours right ? Is this the case ?

JD has until November 4 to opt out or not.

The Sale extension was done at a time when Sale was coming off a season which he ended with significant physical issues. I give you permission to be angry about it.

I think JD is gone no matter what. He either opts out or he doesn't and the Red Sox trade him, perhaps kicking in a little cash to move him. Bloom will simply go Rays with the DH spot, that is, find a way to get good production on the cheap. This might involve some kind of platoon of Ockimey (who rakes against RHP) with a right handed bat who rakes against LHP.

I can certainly see that point of view, but does anyone think for one moment, had we not signed Sale, and he'd gone on to win the Cy Young last year then bolted for free agency, nobody here would be crying about us not signing him?

Take away the injury, and his numbers dictated a much higher salary (and more years), so we did get him on a reduced salary.

Let's give the deal time.

I remember people screaming about the Porcello extension, then apologizing, then screaming again, then...

That's how I see it. The 1B/DH types are going very cheap, these days, and since we'll need both, if JD bolts, I can see that being the place we reduce salary.

I could be wrong, but I'm guessing we stay under but near the luxury tax limit.

Ockimey's numbers vs RHPs:

OPS vs RHPs

2019

.898 AAA(21 HRs in 287 ABs but also 106 Ks)

2018

.783 AAA (5 Hrs & 28 Ks in 70 ABs)

.968 AA (13 Hrs & 72 Ks in 205 ABs)

His BA might be low, but his OBP vs RHPs has been good to great.

.409 in 2017 A+, .390 in 2017 AA, .417 in 2018 AA, .313 in AAA 2018 and .379 this year in AAA.

Sale was paid below market value for seven straight years of finishing in the top six in Cy Young voting. Granted, he was on a contract he signed with Chicago, but it seemed like he was on the verge of finally getting a deserved payday. So when he quickly agreed to terms last winter (as rich as they were) -- before the final year of his old contract, before a Chris Sale salary-drive season, at less than David folding-all-the-cards Price -- I have to admit I was slightly worried about damaged goods. Sox management had to be, too.

As for Martinez, I'm starting to wonder: since he has acknowledged the difficulty of keeping both Betts and himself in Boston -- and knowing how beloved Mookie is with fandom -- doesn't JD ultimately have to opt out? Imagine the pressure on JD if everyone blames his decision to stay as the reason the Red Sox trade Betts? Every media scribe is saying one depends upon the other... Imagine how ugly 2020 could be for Martinez if he decides to stay in Boston, and the Sox struggle again... without Mookie?

At this point JD also knows that if he doesn't opt out, there's a strong chance he's traded.

That's why I think there's a strong chance he opts out. That way he has some control over his own destiny.

I don’t think he is necessarily traded.

And don’t forget, having some control of his own destiny is how he got to Boston.

The biggest reason he won’t opt out is he’s not likely to get a better deal than the one he got when he was two years younger, coming off a career year at the plate and where he actually played in the field, and didn’t have a QO attached...

Not necessarily, but it's a strong possibility. The front office has said as much. JD himself has said as much.

Yes. He can bump Andujar back to fourth string DH.

Maybe the Yankees can sign JD and the Red Sox can sign Aroldis Chapman...

Don't even say that in jest.

I would hope that JD and his agent have had these discussions with the FO, and that the FO has been up front with JD if they intend to trade him. I agree that if he thinks he's going to be traded, he would be more inclined to opt out. I'm not sure that the FO is leaning in that direction though.

Even if they had that discussion, Bronson Arroyo’s agent likely did as well...

I don't think you can take this to final day .JDM gets traded this weekend .

Nobody would trade for him before the choice is made, unless there was a deal in place, and they'd need permission to talk.

That's true, but I would hope not.

I still haven't forgiven Theo for that one.

By Monday, right?

If JD was as sure about this as most of you, he would have opted out already...

I'm not sure of anything.

He could also have said he's definitely not opting out by now...
