Sure, we could do what Moon suggested, cut Porcello, bring up Shawaryn, have piles of bullpen games and just have fun!

And Shawaryn actually might prove to be just as good or better than Porcello has been this year.

Although I’m not a huge Shawaryn fan. He’s a middle reliever at best...

Yes, he MIGHT pitch better than Porcello.

Personally I have more faith in the team than I do in the fans to make these calls. They won't always be right, of course.

Ah yes, the ubiquitous "might" again. :-(

A top three of Bellhorn, Notin and S5Dewey might pitch better than the top three of the Red Sox too, and there's no way to prove that until we take the mound.

"Might" means essentially nothing.

Hell, I’ll take the hill. I can still throw 85 with a nice slider. No command or control though. The other dads in the league cry when I hit them

I used to think the same of Beeks as I do now about Shawaryn. Had w had a chance to play Beeks more maybe Ed have seen he was not as bad as we thought.

Bear in mind it’s more a statement about the performance of Porcello than of the ability of Shawaryn...

Yes, and that we might want to know more about Shawaryn, in order to make tough decisions this winter.

We know Porcello, and we know he won't be back.

I can understand thinking the season is over and all that. It’s been rough. But Chris Owings is a complete bum. If one of the worst teams in MLB released him, why the hell would Red Sox not only pick him up, but have him start vs left handed pitchers? He can’t hit ANY pitcher. Cut this bum and give Holt/Marco all the AB at 2B

I was just going to ask, who the heck is this Chris Owings bum and why is he stealing playing time from Marco Hernandez, who I hope will be our 2Bman next year?

I’m more on the “Marco as our utility infielder/new Brock Holt” bandwagon, with maybe Chavis as the 2b. But yeah, Owings sucks...

We don't know for sure Porcello won't be back, actually.

If Sale is going to miss 2020, a Porcello return is more likely...

I'm thinking so.

And if Sale is out for the season (not the case yet, I know), does it really matter who the last two starters are?

If Sale is out, the reset should be an automatic call. DD should be gone or stripped of the day-to-day operations in favor of a known rebuilder.

We should only sign players that will...

1) Not put us over the luxury tax.

2) Fill a temporary role (1 year contract) that keeps us semi decent next year.

3) Be in the longer term plans at a low cost (probably not many of these types).

Miracles have happened. The Red Sox have been on both the right end and wrong end of those miracles during their history, but making the playoffs this season won’t be easy, especially if Sale and Price are unable to return and the pitching rotation between now and the end of the season will be Rodriguez, Porcello and three mix-and-match-bullpen outings.

Despite the recent, hottest-in-the-Majors, five-game winning streak, the Red Sox, one of only seven American League teams with a winning record, currently are six-and-a-half games out of playoff contention, chasing Tampa Bay and Oakland for the second wid-card spot. (There are ten National League teams closer to playoff contention than the Red Sox, and Cincinnati and San Diego are seven games out.)

In September, Oakland has five games scheduled against teams that currently have winning records. Tampa Bay has nine, including four against the Red Sox. The Red Sox have 16 games scheduled against teams that currently have winning records, including the four against Tampa Bay, and those 16 games will be played during the first 20 games of the month.

i think we are resetting this offseason so without sale pitching we will need to catch lightning in a bottle with someone from the BoTR.

It might just be better to take a year off from competing, get a decent draft pick and international pool monies for bonuses and then go all in for 2021 or 2022.

Try to build up the farm, at least a little, before we start spending big, again.
