And for the Red Sox, he has more Silver Slugger Awards than seasons played.

I doubt he opts out this year, unless there is some serous writing on the wall about a full scale rebuild than he doesn't want to wait through. But I don't think that happens, and I think that JD stays for 2020, but might opt out for 2021 when his salary drops by about $4mill...

He's not opting out. Who pays a DH 22 mil?

Posted
Depends what other teams think he might be worth...

I throw Barnes free BBQ every day of the week to stay.

Solid middle releif is tough to find.

Think door to door selling vacuums is hard? Try coming in at the sixth inning and holding down the fort.

22 mill is fine when he's this good.

EVERYBODY liked signing JD at that price.

I don't think the Sox should trade him because he isn't any good. I think he is very good. The reason to trade him is because his value on the market relative to his value to the Red Sox (including his first year arb salary) and any future reset plans is among the highest on the Red Sox. He's their best trade candidate, with the possible exception of Mookie. But unlike Mookie, the suitors aren't as limited. (But in the right deal the Sox should move Mookie, reset the luxury tax, and then bring him back long term on a contract similar to Nolan Arenado's.)

I also think the Sox should non-tender Bradley. Not because I don't think Bradley is a bad player, but because his fourth year arb salary is likely to become a financial issue....

Good stuff Notin. I read your stuff and it makes me think.

What is the market for JBJ?

Reportedly, Dombrowski tried to move him last offseason. Not sure what the market was, but at the very least, we know it was less than Dombrowski wanted...

I heard that. Not much market. The dudes an enigma.

I think his $8.8mill salary for a Gold Glove fielder/part time hitter just isn't in the budget for a lot of teams. There are plenty of good glove CF's out there who make a lot less...

I could take him or leave him. He aint going to win us a championship, but probably won't lose one either.

The price is ok.

Just wish he was a bit more consistant.

i mean...he was the ALCS MVP in a year we won the world series. so theres that.....

Barnes is our hidden gem. I keep him

Agreed. Selling low makes little sense.

If he is pitching well next year, and we are resetting, then maybe trade him at the deadline.

First, try to trade him. If there are no takers, then non tender and maybe he signs for less.

He didn't really get us there during his amazing hitting slumps though did he? I'm losing patience with you JBJ fan boys.

Plus he finally showed up during a playoff game. Good for him

in 2018 he slumped in April and part of May. so yeah, he got us there. i'm on record saying i trade or non tender him after this season in order to reset the tax. but i'm also not going to put my head in the sand and ignore the contribution the kid made to our 2018 campaign.

sentence 1: he literally won the ALCS MVP.

sentence 2: he had zero to due with getting Boston a parade.

those 2 sentences are in contradiction. which one isnt true?

Look....

I seriously love JBJ. I'm super glad I got to see him roaming center.

I don't think I'll ever see a more bad ass player roaming center.

but......

and don't start with me with JBJ was the reason we won a Championship

Nope. Papi made $16 mill in each of his last 2 years, 2015 and 2016.

My bad.

He did make $1.25 to 6.5 for 4 years.

$12.5-13.25 for 5 years.

$14-15 for 3 years.

$16M for 2 years.

If you figure for inflation, he still was paid significantly less than JD just about every year.

Yes, he was, for him, amazingly consistent from Mid May to season's end. Then, he was hot for the playoffs.

He never said he "was the reason," but the answer to your statement rang truer than your statement.

Papi treated us extremely well. I think he could have gotten a bit more on the open market.

I think we were pretty happy with the JDM contract.

He's def a player I would count on. Good luck to that.
