If we start thinking, "well we can still make the playoffs", then it it will be over. The 1914 Braves were in last place on the 4th of July.

Even 'tho the youngsters, especially, were swining at anytjing in frustration, the fact is there is nothing wrong with the offense.

Re-make the bullpen. Get rid of this nonsese of the closer coming in during the 6th or 7th inning just because of who the other guys have cominmg up. Cloers have been closer since the days of Ty Cobb. Keep it that way. Plus we need about 3 GOODD LH relievers. They can be be bought==especially for some our .189 jubk.

A small correction, please. The bottom 4 hitters in tonights lineup are hitting .187, .202. .185 and .174. I guess that they should go about 3 for 16 (?)

The bottom of our order has some of our hottest hitters.

5 for 16.

When Ty Cobb played, teams didn’t even have specialized bullpens, let alone closers. Saves, which were not a stat and wouldn’t be for more than a half century, usually went to starting pitchers on their off days. Had anyone kept the stat, Lefty Grove would have lead the league in saves multiple times and in 1930, would have lead the AL in both saves and wins...

Now, those managers knew how to use their studs!

In my time, there was only one Lefty Grove and one Dizzy Dean. Williams blamed ot on the s;ider/ We ;ook at the CG stat and it's almost unbe;ievable!

I'm with you on the "It ain't over till it's over" part!

Sox will be in for a dogfight for a wildcard spot. It won't be easy.

Maybe.

I don't see the Guardians as our equals, but I suppose they could be. TB is for real, but it's really about the final spot, and I only see 5 really good AL teams, and one is the Sox.

The Guardians do have a much easier schedule, though.

The Sox are not "really good". They are exactly as good as their record says they are at any given point in time. Right now, at two games over .500 and playing at a pace to win 86 games they practically define mediocrity.

Wait ... it ain't over till it's over for the Seattle Mariners?:)

Don’t underestimate the Guardians and the 57 games they play against Detroit, Kansas City and the White Sox....

I couldn't disagree more.

Teams go through phases. There's no way we end up with just 86 wins, unless the injury bug bites us hard.

The schedule is the only thing that may make it difficult, but I think we beat them by 5+ games and will probably pass TB, too.

The hole we dug may be too deep to catch the Yanks for the division, but, if we are healthy, I like our chances come playoff time.

I don't think the odds are as good as last year's odds, but we will be tough to beat.

Don't forget about Oakland.

As bad as we've been playing, we are currently tied for the last wild card slot with Oakland.

I guess, if you think our 29-27 record is what we will continue to be, then sure, we likely won't make it, but there's no way in hell I believe we will play .518 ball the rest of the way.

Yeah, they might play worse considering they spent no money on the bullpen and Walden and Brasier have been exposed and we have 1 decent arm in the bullpen (Barnes).

I think the best the Sox can hope for now is a wildcard spot. Have to hope that Cleveland and Oakland don't get hot. Plus, Sox have to do much better head to head against them as well as within the division against the Yanks and Rays. No signs yet that they can play much above .500 ball so far.

Cant take a thread serious when its misspelled with punctuation m@rk$!!!!!!!.

And I can't take any poster seriously when he nit-picks over the posts of a gentleman three times his age.

I think there are signs that the Sox can play better. The hitting seems to be picking up of late and when healthy our starters are quite effective. Our main bugaboo is the BP that has looked bad recently. If that can't be rectified, we could well be a 500 club. With the Pen doing a better job, we could get a wild card berth. I doubt we catch the Yankees this year.

Three times SCM's age? No way! Mal is way more than 33.

Well, your parents should have just 69'd when they were 33. Then there would never be a jad. Youd be a stain on the sheets.

Also the Sox defense has been lacking some so far. The overall performance of the pitching/defense has been keeping them from rising to a higher level of success. They have shown they can score, but they have not shown as good an ability to stop their opponents from scoring. That is keeping them in the lower level of contending teams.

The Red Sox are the world champs . We won 119 games last year . We have the highest payroll in baseball. Even suggesting that we can win the second wild card ( a gimmick that shouldn't even exist ) is an embarrassment. The goal has to be to win the A.L. East . A goal we have achieved three straight years.

All that you pointed out has zero bearing on this season. You don't win games based on last year's performance or the team payroll. You win based on how you perform in each season. It doesn't matter how you make the playoffs. The Sox won the division for two straight years and went nowhere in the playoffs; one of those seasons included a legendary regular season by David Ortiz. Just make the playoffs. That is all that matters. Style points are meaningless.
