But Buckner is the one who got remembered...

All the circumstances conspired against him. You've got a team trying to break (arguably) the most famous championship drought in history. You've got a 2-run lead, 2 outs and nobody on, preparations for celebration being made in the locker room. And then the drawn-out drama of the Mets rally. And then, to culminate it all, you've got the most embarrassing play in baseball, the ball through the wickets, which makes an athlete look as silly as they can possibly look.

and the GOAT MLB play-by-play man calling the play.

honestly those 6 or 7 minutes had to be the most insane 6 or 7 minutes in the history of baseball.

Absolutely surreal, and pure horror for a Sox fan.

I was watching the game in a bar in Toronto. Just as the Mets were starting their really, the song that was playing was 'All I Need Is a Miracle'.

No. But after drinking a quart of rum that night and another the next day, a friend said I looked like Sid Vicious.

As long as you didn’t stab your gf, it’s all good.

R.I.P. Buckner . Can you imagine if there was a Sox forum back in 1986 ? A game thread ? Can you imagine the brutal treatment he would have received from Sox fans ? Now , we get all of the obligatory statements about what a great player he was , how his career shouldn't be defined by one play and how that play really wasn't the reason the Sox lost the Series anyway .

There didn't need to be a forum. His kids were treated so badly by fans here he moved to Idaho to get away from them.

How disgusting is that. Not much better than these nutjob soccer fans with vendettas against anyone who screws up.

Yes. Baseball fans don't murder people like Buckner and Bartman. They settle for making the rest of their lives a living hell.

The Bartman saga was a particularly odd one.

He was reviled in Chicago, where the Chicago Sun Times (motto: “A 2-ply newspaper for your comfort”) actually ran a story the next day giving out his name, home address, and work address. And our governor/felon Rod Blagojevich publicly suggested he enter witness protection.

All Bartman did was act like a fan before the incident and become immensely classy afterwards. Marlins fans offered him money, which he donated to charity. Other fans raised money via GoFundMe to bring him to 2015 and 2016 postseason games. Bartman donated that money, too. The Cubs even offered him a chance to throw out the first pitch in the 2016 World Series and, later, an opportunity to be in the celebratory parade. Bartman declined everything. (Seriously.)

And as far as anyone knows, he has never returned to Wrigley...

i wonder if he is still a Cubs fan?

Apparently he is, according to his lawyer. He declines all interviews..
