What are the chances of Porcello being offered a contract extension?

winning > wife beater

Sad!

Ya at the end of the day, wins are important and having good players on your team is important but if he is a wife beating asshat with some serious issues off the field I don't want him on our team at all. I could care less how good he is and that goes for any of the major sports (NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA)

Damn that was a good read!!

I saw this and immediately realized I had to post it for you. Glad you appreciated it.

It is gonna be really hard to do so and improve the team. If Porcello gets re-signed, you're staring at the same team now minus Moreland and Pearce with no other upgrades.

Agreed, but if the rest of the players play like 2018 with maybe Devers, Vaz and Bogey playing a little more like 2019, we should still be pretty, highly competitive.

Here's a look at a possible 2020 roster (assuming JD stays and Porcello, Moreland, Pearce, Nunez, and Thorburg bolt via free agency):

Luxury Tax Dollars

SP (~$83M)

25.6 Sale

31.0 Price

17.0 Eovaldi

~8.0 ERod (3rd arb out of 4)

0.6 B Johnson

0.6 Velazquez

RP (~$12.6M)

~4.5 Barnes (2nd or 3 arbs)

~2.5 Workman (3 of 3 arbs)

0.6 Walden

~2.5 Hembree (2nd or 3 arbs)

~0.6 ________ (JBJ traded for cheap but solid RP'er)

0.6 Brasier

~1.0 Wright (3 of 3 arbs)

C (~$4.5M)

4.5 Vaz

0.6 Centeno or Leon (possible massive pay cut?)

1B (~$1.2M)

0.6 Chavis

0.6 Dalbec or Ockimey (Chavis)

2B (~$19.3)

~4.0 Holt

0.6 Chatham

~0.9 Marco Hernandez

13.8 Pedroia

3B (~0.6M)

0.6 Devers (last pre-arb year) (Dalbec)

SS

$22 Bogey

LF (~$6M)

~6.0 Beni(1st of 3 arbs)

CF (~$0.6M)

0.6 G Hernandez

RF (~$27M)

~27.0 Betts

DH ($22M)

22.0 Martinez

$203M Total

~$15M Player benefits

~$2M 15 pre-arb players on 40 man roster (minors)

$220M Total

$208M is the luxury tax for 2020.

We could stay under by more by saying good bye to JD, getting Pedey to retire or trading salary.

(I was wrong about being able to reset by just trading JBJ, in an earlier post.)

Agreed. I’m just not sure we are better off though. Who fills that spot if he leaves?

Nice post. Saying good bye to JD would not be easy. I’m glad I’m not in charge of the organization. It’s tough to know what to do.

We'd still have a good team without JD and Porcello, but probably not "highly" competitive, unless Bogey, Devers, Betts and Beni all equal their best seasons all at once, AND some of our farm hands step up and play decent ball... not great but just decent. Oh, and everyone stay healthy... LOL!

Very true. And honestly I think Hernandez might actually turn out to be a decent pitcher for us. Getting Eovaldi back will be huge. I just don’t want to see anymore bullpen games. Ugh. They are painful.

Maybe Shawaryn can surprise us.

Feltman has been disappointing.

It would be an immense boost if one from Chatham, Chavis, Dalbec or Ockimey do better than just "decent" next year.

Feltman has given up 2 runs in his past 14 innings. Cut him a little slack.

hide the women and the drugs....the Sox PR machine is starting to hype up a Wright return.....

Great.

A 34yo pitcher whose thrown 78 mostly ineffective innings in the past 2 years combined while battling numerous injuries and domestic issues. What could possibly go wrong?

He is a bridge as he is ineligible for the postseason

God no...... I don't ever want to see him in a Sox uniform again.

What if we got Gerrit Cole? Anyone think he could take Porcellos spot. I didn’t even realize he was a free agent next year. I need to start paying attention to other teams.

Cole will be very expensive, and certainly cost much more than Porcello, who has expressed an interest in coming back and might even take less money.

Cole is a better pitcher, but signing him over Porcello makes keeping Betts that much more difficult...

Agreed. I figured he wouldn’t be cheap. He might be better than Lporcello but not by much in my opinion

Trending is more critical for minor leaguers than entire body of work. They are constantly making adjustments. Working on new things. It's very possible that something has clicked for Feltman. I agree, let's cut him some slack. I don't care what he did in beginning. It matters what he is doing. (especially true for relievers)

I loved the Porcello-Cespedes trade and fully supported the extension contract, but that was based on Porcello's age at the time, and the idea that all his years of team control would be in prime.

His next deal is not the same. I'm all for bringing him back, but it depends on the cost and length of the deal.

My guess is, we offer him a QO, and either way, we'll be okay.

I say we offer 3 years. 21 million.

Total or per year?

Both are crazy, but a 3 year $63mill deal might work...

I'm thinking $48M/4 or $$38M/3. If he says no, I give him a QO and either way, I'm okay.

And I thought offering him $60mill/4 would be an insult.

If the Sox want him back, his next offer will be close to his last deal. Maybe slightly reduced AAV...

He's past prime next year. $60M/4 might be as high as I'd go.

So is Chris Freakin’ Sale, whose like 3 months younger. But Sale got a raise...
