What are the chances of Porcello being offered a contract extension?

Sandoval comes off the books, with 5 million buyout, but Sale goes in at 30 million. I doubt they sign Porcello. Edited by OH FOY!

Porcello has been and will always be I think a mid rotation kind of guy at best. he has been very valuable to the organization for sure. Everybody wants durable inning eaters. His number gets called, he goes to the mound. I think before the question of whether he comes back or not gets addressed, don't the Sox kind of have to see what transpires this season? We just started. Ultimately if he expects more than mid-rotation money, I don't think that he will get it in Boston.

Given his off-season spending spree, DDis going to need some minimum wage rookies to step in. This means it’s actually almost safe to pencil in Mike Shawaryn or Darwinzon Hernandez (or more likely, both) for the 2020 rotation. Both are certainly huge question marks as MLB pitchers, even with Hernandez having limited success this ST. But neither alone will be able to fill Porcello’s one undeniable skill of durability...

And Xander was extended. Porcello isn’t returning

How do you know??? Apparently Porcello has made it very clear he wants to stay in Boston and would make a very good negotiation to stay. Half the people are talking about Sale and Xander.... Porcello is neither of them and he knows it. I highly doubt he asks for something super unreasonable especially if he wants to stay in Boston that bad. Only way I see him asking for a massive contract is if he gets his s*** together and has another CY Young type season which I don't see happening.

Tend to agree with Jacko here.

Porcello might want to come back at a reduced cost, he can’t go too low without the union getting upset. And the Sox commitments for next season might be too prohibitive. Especially with the JD Martinez situation looming.

Holt has stated he wants to come back, but hasn’t Ben extended. I don’t think this means he is definitely gone, but it certainly leaves the door wide open...

I wonder how Porcello feels about the word getting out that he openly sought an extension , only to be rebuffed by management. Probably not too good .

I think it just depends how this season works out in my opinion. If Porcello keeps this dog s*** play up I don't blame anyone for not wanting him back even if it's for a million a season. As mentioned before, Porcello will give you innings and is a work horse. He is never injured, and always plays when called upon. He isn't our Ace but a nice 4th guy in the rotation. It's hard to pass up on something like that if we can get him at a decent price. Porcello is already worth millions and millions, has a World Series under his belt, and a CY Young season. Not really much left for him to do other than play for a team he really wants to play for (which it sounds like is Boston)

Eh, how much did he ask for - is that out there too?

Porcello is probably drawing some consolation from the fact he's making $21 million this year. Which is $21 million more than Kimbrel and Keuchel.

And that he’s only 30 and could be a free agent.

As he’s not “in his 30’s”, he stands a chance to pitch himself into a decent contract...

Also this whole Player X wants to play for Team Y “for the rest of his career” seems like a worn-out negotiation ploy to get an extension. And if it happens at an acceptable rate, win for the player. If the team rebuffs him, it vilifies the management...

Meh I agree, but in Porcellos case he really does seem to love Boston and his teammates. I could easily seem him taking a nice negotiation to play for the team he likes. I doubt Porcello is all that humiliated by the fact the fans know he asked to stay in Boston at a discount.

I'm in the same boat Kimmi, as inconsistent as he is..... The man can play some damn good baseball when he gets hot. He started the season last year on fire and had shades of his CY Young season. I think he has it in him to turn this season around throw some good pitches.

Agree. I feel like Porcello is underrated because he doesn't have the shining ERA.

He has him moments of excellence, along with his very poor starts, but most of the time, he will give the team 6+ innings and keep the team in the game.

I can't say as I've seen him smile - I wasn't watching for it. However, on the day in ST when the Sox had a moment of silence for Swi's recently passed brother Porcillo did put his arm around Swi's shoulders, gave him a 'shoulder hug' and a pat on the shoulder. My words don't due this justice, but it was a fine moment.

Nice. I didn't see this, so I'm glad you shared.

I doubt he takes $15M/2 to stay, but that might be the best DD would (could) offer.

Ya I can't see him taking something that low, but if the season keeps going the way it is for Porcello...… I unfortunately for Porcello's sake can't see teams offering him a ton. Still lots of baseball left to be played though. I wonder what the chances of us hearing price was before the season started in negotiation talks.

There is not many comps of lackluster workhorses like Porcello with a Cy Young in their resume.

With guys like Keuchel still looking for a contract, it's hard to know what a GM might offer him right now, let alone this coming winter.

It's insanely surprising Keuchel still doesn't have a contract offer..... He played good last year too. Any ideas on what he is asking? Has to be pretty big for him to still be a free agent.

And is Dombrowski thinking about him as a rotation option?

Rumor here in Houston was that he was injury waiting to happen.

Agreed! In any sport I don’t trust.

I don't see him fitting into the budget. He will be gone after this season. If he doesn't have a good season, he won't receive a qualifying offer, but I suspect he will pitch well enough to receive and reject a qualifying offer.

Mike Shawaryn replaces Porcello in the rotation next season. Shawaryn has looked great so far this year in AAA. I suppose Brian Johnson will get a chance to replace Porcello as well. Houck will probably need another year of development.

If this turns into a down season for the Red Sox, Porcello would be an excellent trade chip at the deadline, assuming he puts up typical Porcello numbers.

I think I disagree with everything said here.

Porcello will not be offered a QO of over $19M.

DHernandez is Porcello's replacement.

Johnson stays in the pen, if he even makes the team.

I overlooked D.Hernandez; I agree: he will also compete for Porcello's spot.

However, Hernandez may need another year of development to improve his location. He definitely has location issues.

If Porcello has a strong 2019 season and accepts the QO, the Red Sox could trade the contract pretty easily. The risk is minimal.

Word is he is currently asking for a 1-year deal at a respectable dollar amount. I don't know what kind of money he is looking for.

OTOH, Kimbrel is apparently still holding out for at least a 3 year deal. We may very well lose his draft pick.

It’s a bit premature, but so far:

Porcello - no QO? Yes.

Hernandez as his replacement. I agree with this halfway. I have my doubts about him (or any rookie) suddenly trying to pitch 180 IP at the major league level. But I could see him and Shawaryn combining for the rotation spot.

Johnson? I’m barely behind the decision to keep him this year.
