The owners have a master plan to stifle arbitration and free agency . Coerce players into signing contract extensions. It is working well so far . Whoever does it best gets the replica WWE title belt . Edited by dgalehouse

The deal is worth $132MM over seven years, as per ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan (Twitter links), though this counts the $12MM that Bogaerts is already earning for the 2019 season in his final year of arbitration eligibility. As MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand notes, the extension is really a six-year, $120MM deal covering the 2020-25 seasons. The contract also has a vesting option for 2026 according to the New York Post’s Joel Sherman (Twitter links), with an opt-out clause after the third season. Bogaerts is represented by the Boras Corporation.

$20M x 6 is an outright steal!

$18.9mill AAV and runs through age 33. Excellent deal...

Is it $18.9M x 7 for the luxury tax or $12M for 2019 and $20M x 6?

Wow. This is unexpected and a little light for Bogey.

Are you beginning to rethink the idea that we might be able to keep more pieces than we thought?

I was a bit worried when I saw the news as I was expecting a massive overpay to stop him from testing FA, but this is a great deal. Happy to keep Xander around

I love the Sale & Bogey deals.

I wish we could get Betts to take a discount, but I don't blame him for wanting the biggest payday possible.

Xander Bogaerts career in Boston : Batting avg . .283 - Home runs - 75 - OPS - .772. - Stolen bases - 49 ................ Jacoby Ellsbury career in Boston : Batting avg . .297 - Home runs - 65 . OPS - .789 . Stolen bases - 241 . Just something to think about .

Are you beginning to rethink the idea of a reset and a " cliff " ?

No, the way this deal is set up, it's really a 6 yr $120 mil extension and he will have a $20 mil cap hit next year. I highly doubt you can keep anyone else and the fact that Porcello came to DD and asked to be extended tells you where their finances are. I said before that I expected the sox to sign one. I thought it would be tight but doable to extend 2. It is impossible to extend 3 or 4

The Sox hope this is a 3 year extension, IMO. Bogey has an opt out after 3 seasons. If he plays well enough, he will take it. He’ll have just turned 30 before he hits FA again and should get a nice payday if he opts out.

Sale and Bogaerts are taken care of . The Sox will do what is necessary to keep Martinez and Betts . Losing Porcello , Bradley and Moreland is not exactly like going off of a cliff . Far from it .

My whole "cliff" premise is based on the idea that the Sox will reset after 2019 or 2020.

If we do, we will not be highly competitive that season.

If that sounds like a walk back of the "cliff" talk, so be it.

I'll be happy to eat crow.

If Betts makes $28M in arb, we cannot reset next year, unless we deal salary.

(see the Realistic thread for my update on the 2020 budget.)

Porcello, JBJ, Moreland, Pearce, Nunez & Holt.

Replaced with DHernandez, JD to the OF full time, Dalebec & Chavis at DH, 3B or 1B, and Chatham at 2B, unless Pedey stays healthy.

No pen upgrades.

Scary bench.

Maybe no "cliff," but we'll need some surprises to stay strong, unless we keep spending near the max line.

That is savings of $52M plus Sandoval's $18M adds to $70M. Between Sale and Xander, delta from 2019 to 2020 is $22M. My guess is at least fo 2020, JBJ will be back so net is $38M. Cot has Sox at $238M so we're at $200M before arbitation increases.

I just don't see a reset coming Moon.

DD has doubled down on extending the window. It is a good strategy as your farm lacks star power. The problem with it is it deepens the cliff. I am also very surprised that Henry is willing to go to the 50% tax mark while spending right up to and possibly over the final tax limit. If DD goes right to the limit in 2020, he will pay $10 mil for the first threshold and $13 mil for the second. I am surprised he would drop $23 mil in lux tax spending. That being said, when you have a title team, you extend as long as you can to keep it going.

To become a good team, DD dealt off a solid farm. To maintain greatness you pick at the bottom of the draft. To spend as much as they did, you lose draft capital and FA return capital plus INTL capital. It is the anti Ben, but it won you a title and flags fly forever. The problem is, when this starts to crumble, it is going to take a LONG time to fix. I also think this move almost necessitates JBJ moving on after 2020 as you'll have to allocate his money to Betts plus arb raises. Let's say that after this year, the sox keep JDM and in 2020, the sox re-sign Mookie to a $35 mil AAV deal. Here will be the deals on the books for 2021

Price $31 mil

Pedroia $14 mil

Sale $29 mil

Bogaerts $20 mil

Eovaldi $17 mil

Betts $35 mil

JDM $22 mil (assuming an extension)

That's $168 mil in 7 players. The limit will be $210 mil. You'll have to pay ERod for his final arb year, Beni for his second arb year, Devers for his first arb year, Barnes for his final arb year and replace JBJ, Porcello, Moreland, Pearce, Holt, etc on the cheap. Thankfully for you, Pedroia will be off the books in 2022 and Price in 2023, but those two years are probably going to be leaner years. But DD did a good job in propping the window open for this year and next

No reset, Henry would rather have good teams and pay the tax. He's the greatest owner ever, and very shrewd as well. What the hell does a little tax matter when you're winning titles and the market value of your team keeps going up?

You touted the cliff for so long and you're already walking it back in 2019? This is the opposite of commitment.

It's almost like I've been saying all along that they can afford anyone that they want to keep. Huh? Go figure.

They aren’t going to lose Martinez. The Sox are already prepared to pay him $62mill over the next 3 years, and if he opts out for more years at a lower AAV, they’ll be involved in that, too.

The JD Martinez-Dombrowski relationship goes back way too many years and so far, DD seems like the only GM to ever have faith in this guy...

I still don't think they can afford everyone, but those such as yourself who have argued that JH has no interest in cutting payroll and resetting are being proven right.

I didn't say "everyone." I said "everyone they want." I think that means they can sign all of the core (the B's, Sale, Devers) if they want to and will find savings elsewhere (Porcello, Moreland, Nunez, etc.) by replacing them with cheaper options (Chavis, Dalbec, Hernandez, Lin, FA's, etc.). Maybe Porcello becomes a FA this offseason and a market doesn't really develop (hesitant about a 31 year old with 2,000 innings on his arm) and he comes back cheaply?

Posted
But they didn't become billionaires by spending money!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont think either deal signed this offseason is over the top spending (see: price contract). and neither one effects the threshold for this season which has been my contention for lack of closer signing. i believe it still holds true.
