Not much of a hot stove league contributor, but do love the seasons. Today I bought my season ticket to mlb.tv and felt like the Jimmy Fallon math teacher in Fever Pitch.

Let the games begin!!!

How do you know it's dumb if you've never seen it?

The previews I've seen are terrible and it's ridiculous that they allowed Fallon on the field after winning in 04. It's also just an Americanized version of a British movie that is supposed to be much better.

Sports movies are typically dumb (especially baseball ones).

Baseball movies I'd rather watch:

Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch

Ed

Rookie of the Year

The Sandlot (best baseball movie of all time)

Major League

Brewster's Millions (it counts)

Bad News Bears

Mr 3000 (underrated)

Bad News Bears Breaking Training

A League of Their Own

The Pride of the Yankees

Field of Dreams, Bull Durham and the Natural can suck it.

Meh. I agree Fever Pitch is neither a great movie nor a very good baseball movie, but it should be irresistable for a Sox fan. And you can forget that "borrowed from a British soccer movie' stuff because, guess, what? Lots of good movies came from other ones--also some not so good movies. What both those movies capture are the enthusiasm of fans, which is short for fanatics, which is what Jimmy Fallon's character surely is.

I like most baseball movies because of the subject matter and completely disagree about Bull Durham, but probably not about Field of Dreams and the Natural. I like Mr Baseball with Tom Selleck because, unlike Gary Cooper, he obviously has some athletic ability and a swing that ain't half bad. I like Moneyball even though it's not completely factual.

Mr Baseball is pretty good too.

I'm with you on Sandlot, The Bad News Bears movies, Major League, Mr 3000 and Pride of the Yankees.

How do you people ignore “Little Big League”? Maybe the best written baseball movie of all time...

I get that one confused with Rookie of the Year which came out the year before.

How do you leave off Moneyball, Summer Catch, and 42??!! That list is a sham.

I didn't like Moneyball. The book was fine. Haven't seen the other two.

Great point because it actually does a pretty good job of bringing out the nuances of managing, which ain't that easy to do while entertaining people.

I did, but respect what you say because the movie took some real liberties with Art Howe and with when and what trades were made in order to make a point (sabermetrics can help) painfully obvious. Hollywood often does that. They did the same thing in Argo and other films (Lawrence of Arabia, etc, etc). Moneyball was nominated for six academy awards. The Great Raid--not a sports movie--was a box office bomb and not well liked by the critics, but it's an accurate retelling of the rescue (by Army rangers) of over 500 POW's in the Philippines in 1945.

“Summer Catch” was a movie made to put Jessica Biel in a swimsuit. The baseball was a complete backdrop.

Despite it being about Yankees, I did enjoy “61*”...

Twilight. Best. Baseball. Movie. Ever.

Or.....For Love of the Game.

I started watching For Love of the Game without realizing it's two and a half goddamn hours long. Story is pretty hokey, too.

Baseball movies I'd rather watch:

Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch - haven't seen it.

Ed - seen about 1/2 of it; it's as ridiculous as you would imagine.

Rookie of the Year - cute movie.

The Sandlot (best baseball movie of all time) - I still have not seen this.

Major League - very good, some iconic lines and moments. Perfect choice of theme song.

Brewster's Millions (it counts) - pretty good.

Bad News Bears - it took two viewings before I "got" this movie. At least, I think I get it.

Mr 3000 (underrated) - meh, it's OK as baseball comedies go.

Bad News Bears Breaking Training - haven't seen it.

A League of Their Own - saw it too long ago to remember much about it.

The Pride of the Yankees - haven't seen it.

Field of Dreams - I think it's good, I really need to rewatch it.

Bull Durham - I don't care for Sarandon's character and the romance drags it down, but the stuff between Crash and "Nuke" is hilarious

the Natural - didn't really get it/see what the fuss was about. It's kinda boring.

Also receiving votes:

It Happens Every Spring - good comedy with Ray Milland inventing a substance that makes it impossible for a bat to hit a ball. (I don't think it's shown in the movie, but I assume he switches out the doctored balls for regular ones now and again, or else a string of 27 strikeout perfect games would look a tad suspicious).

Moneyball - the book was OK but became a bit of a chore to read after a while. I think the movie did a fair job of covering the basics and making it watchable, but Jonah Hill is terrible.

Angels in the Outfield (1951) - if any baseball fans hate this movie, well, I just don't know what to say.

The Fan - good psychological drama about De Niro, deranged fan, and Wesley Snipes as the player and source of his obsession. The book was better.

Major League 2 - it's poor, but still has a couple of good jokes.

42 - wasn't feel good, didn't pull punches.

61* - good movie, the two actors playing Maris and Mantle were good.

The Rookie - feel good movie based on a true story.

Ken Burns' Baseball - required viewing.

I think I saw the movie of Eight Men Out when I was a kid, but don't remember much. The book was amazing.

The best fictional sports movie I've seen is Big Fan.

I didn't think Fever Pitch was all that bad.

I didn't either, but the thing I had going for me was that the first time I saw it, I was a 9 year old on a bus going to Fenway. Nothing could ruin that mood

Yes, I'm guessing that everyone else on this forum who has seen the movie watched it under different circumstances than those. :)

Since I also don't remember the 2004 postseason run, I also enjoyed it for that reason.

And, after finally going to ST this year for the first time, I can confirm that nobody acts that crazy, at least not anymore

I disagree about Summer Catch. It's like 60% about baseball. And it doesn't hurt that they fill up the non-baseball parts with Jessica Biel in varied amounts of clothing.

Sorry, no good movie can be made when your cast includes Freddie Prinze Jr, Matthew Lillard, and Wilmer Valderama. It can’t be done. Scientists have proven this multiple times...

The first Major League movie is the best baseball movie. The third Major League movie (Back to the Minors) is the worst baseball movie.

Major League was a complete ripoff of Bull Durham. You know the entire pitch that sold that movie was “Ok how about we take the players from Bull Durham, you know, the grizzled veteran catcher whose seen the game pass him by, the young firebrand pitcher whose all arm and no brains, the Voodoo practitioner, the Christian zealot, all of them, and ... get this... put them IN THE MAJOR LEAGUES!!!?”
