$35.83M a year for 12 years.

Is Mookie worth $35M x 10?

$36M x 8?

$34M x 12?

$34M X 11 = $375 million

Somewhere in Connecticut, a math teacher is shuddering.

This is a 10 years extension added to his current remaining 2 years. So 10/366 new money is something Betts will want to match or surpass. Betts is 1 years younger so he'll want at least that years of commitment.

I'm sure Mookie is very happy about this deal

If he keeps performing he will get a lot $$$$$, somewhere between Harper and Trout, how many years???

Harper got an excellent deal from the Phils . I am sure he is happy with it . He certainly cannot reasonably expect to be paid as much as Trout .

Mookie is going to be using this extension as his starting point. Mookie will be one year younger when he hits FA compared to the first year of Trout’s extension. Also, Trout signed this while still under contract with LA, meaning that he gave away what the free market would offer for the security beyond his current deal.

Mookie has to prove he can do like last year again. Otherwise hes not getting no 300Mil contract. Trout is basically a 10 war player EVERY year ( Betts is not) . If Betts has a drop off this season like he did in 2017 its going to hurt him financially

Did it hurt Harper? Harper is widely inconsistent. Betts is also better than in 2017 than all Harper season except 1.

Trout has compiled 64.9 fWAR in 1065 games.

Mookie has compiled 30.6 fWAR in 644 games.

Trout 9.87 fWAR per 162 games.

Mookie 7.70 fWAR per 162 games.

These numbers suggest Trout's value is about 28% higher. He may also have a physique that's likely to last longer.

Bottom line, Mookie is not quite at the same level.

Well I guess it depends what Mookie does this season. If he replicates his 2018 season, I can't see him taking a deal that's not at least comparable to Trout's.

He’ll be somewhere between Machado and Trout for total value...

Haha. Did I move to Connecticut?

When will the madness end?

I think the stupidity of this contract speaks for itself. I'm done with the rationality speeches.

As for "will Mookie get less if he doesn't play as well?" - he might not get $430mil, but unless he completely tanks to the Mendoza line with single digit taters, he's getting over $300mil easily. It's not really about the stats, because the stats have a ceiling of human ability. It's about the star power and putting asses in seats and eyes tuning in.

Sorry, is it Virginia?

Yes, it is.

I was wondering if you had another math teacher Red Sox friend who shudders at the thought of huge contracts. :)

Mookie will get paid. He shouldn't get as much as Trout, because he's not quite as good as Trout, but he'll get paid.

Also, they're obviously doing this contract because the Pujols one worked out so well.

You'd think they'd learn.

I hate professional sports. I liked professional sports much more when all I cared about was getting a Diamond King in a 1992 Donruss Pack or hitting a home run with my favorite player in World Series Baseball, or Triple Play 96.

The business side of it ruins it for the fans. How much money is enough?

Their answer: "What do you mean, 'enough?'"
