dWAR is terrible stat. for real tell me you think Gallo is better then JBj at CF D.

I haven’t seen Gallo play CF for a single inning, so we’d just be working off reputations here...

That's maybe the biggest change from the old view.

We went from one of the weakest up 2nd to one of the best in just a few years.

Exactly. I often hear that it's not rocket science that your high OBP guys should be at the top of the lineup, and we don't need advanced stats to tell us that, or something along those lines, but until recently, the typical #2 hitter was equivalent to a #8 hitter.

So apparently, we did need sabermetrics to tell us that.

Even with that, the change has been very slow coming.

back to Devers....his 3b defense has been stellar for a good stretch now after a rough start to the season.

Feeling more confident in my prediction that he will be our starting 3bman for the next 10 years may actually come true.....

Devers has been really, really good defensively after a shaky start. Really nice to see.

He sure has.

He looks like a different defender out there.

His foot work looks perfect, now. He quickly gets into throwing posture, and it has shown in his more accurate throws.

I'm impressed, and I was a leader in the "Maybe Devers will be better at 1B someday camp."

Old school also used bunting and hit & runs (often from the #2 hitter) much more than today.

It seems like common sense to want your two best OBP (or at least 2 of the top 3 or 4 on your team) guys up 1 & 2.

One could ask, what took so long to figure this out? It's not really a sabermetric determination.

If you look at our top 5 everyday players there is not a lot of separation between them in on base %. Betts 38.7%, Bogaerts 38.0%, Devers 37.8% , Martinez 37.1%, Beni 36.1%

Given that lack of spread, other factors also need to be considered, like speed on the base path, righty/lefty alternating in the lineup, power to drive people in. I'm satisfied with our current lineup and that manaagement considers a range of conditions before setting the lineup.

Agreed. Much much improved. His bat speaks for itself nowadays as well. Before the past 6-7 weeks he was just someone who had *potential*. Now he is realizing his talent to its full extent.

What a nice play to end last night's game!

No kidding. We're now watching Devers turn into one of the better players in MLB... at age 22.

I've always been super high on Devers, mostly his offense, but to see such a giant step up on both D and O in the same season by a 22 year old is an amazing and joyful thing to watch!
