Would it not be wonderful if they groomed Chavis at 2nd base to replace Pedey. Just imagine a power hitting 2nd baseman the likes of .....................(you fill in the blank)

Everything that I have seen indicates that he is playing multiple positions. He very likely might get his chance at some point this year.

Chavis will get called up this year - book it.

But not to be some right-handed bench bat or to play 2b two times a week. They’ll call him when they need him...

So should we chase Pedroia out of town with torches and pitchforks or just take him to the vet and have him put to sleep?

I'm hoping that dustcover said that under the assumption that Pedey would be PUP.

It’s a tough call. People have been trying to run the guy out of town all off-season...

Not at all, I'm hoping Pedey is fully recovered from his surgery and puts up All Star numbers this season. But, sooner or later, the Sox will have to deal with finding his replacement. And in spite the myriad of alternatives, I was just surmising the possibility of Chavez becoming the consistent, power-hitting 2nd baseman of the future. I just hope they don't trade him away for some relief pitcher ala Jeff Bagwell.

Pedroia is signed for a few more years yet, so I would think if they plan to keep Chavis, they will probably want to find a place for him before then. Now with Moreland and Pearce both free agents after 2019, 1b will be open either for Chavis or Devers with Chavis taking 3rd...

I'm not sure Chavis is or can be better than Devers at 3B, and that's not saying much.

I think these are the two most probable outcomes, assuming we don't add any corner IF'ers before now and 2020, and we don't bring Moreland or Pearce back.

1.

1B- Chavis

3B- Devers

2.

3B-Dalbec

1B- Devers

If JD Martinez bolts...

3B- Dalbec

1B- Devers

DH- Chavis

Ecchhh... My hopes for Pedey aside, I don't see him being a viable 2B in 2019 & into 2020. (Is there a reason we haven't seen him in ST yet?) If Pedey isn't available we will have three (or maybe all four :() IF spots available going into 2019.

I have some reservations about Chavis because of his "baggage" and fortunately that's not my decision to make, but if he stays I can see him at 2B almost by default because IMO neither Dalbec nor Devers are quick enough to play 2B. As to who plays 1B or 3b... it doesn't matter on offense but I like Dalbec at 1B because of his size. I played in the IF for a few years with a 1B who was 6'10" and knowing that if I could get the ball anywhere near the base he'd catch it made my life a lot easier.

Four? Where would Devers be?

I don’t see any of these guys as viable middle infielders. Chavis will be a interesting cas, since he should see MLB this year. Dalbec isn’t so likely.

But Chavis’ glove and footwork per the limited reports on him may got limit him to 1b or corner OF (or DH). Of these positions, only 1b (and possibly DH) opens up after this season.

If Pedroia doesn’t come back, Chavis might get some action at 2b, but I don’t have high hopes for him sticking there. I’d actually rather see the more athletic Swihart get the chance over him.

But if you look in the Sox minor leagues, 2b is not a strong position. Brett Netzer is the closest option? Most of the 2b in the Sox system (Lin, Renda, Rivera, De La Guerra) seem more like players with a ceiling of utility infielder...

I was assuming he re-arranged Devers to 1b and then counted him as new...

And I'm still hoping Lin keeps swinging better & better and gets a position in the infield too.

I like littler guys as my people to learn the the middle IF positions on the fly and neither Devers nor Dalbec qualify as "little". Smaller guys have smaller moving parts and therefore don't get in their own way as much. Therefore if I'm going to teach someone to play 2B at this point in their career I like Chavis' chance's of success better.

Of course, as you said, there's Lin who was described by Cora last season as being 'the best defensive player in our organization'. That leaves us with solid defense @ 2B but not much offense in Lin or adequate (?) defense but lots of offense in Chavis.

Of course, that brings me around to a question I've asked but hasn't been answered of, How long do the benefits of steroid use remain in the body after a player stops using? Is Chavis' power going to go away or is he now what he's going to be going forward?

The effects don’t last very long. That’s why these guys need to keep using.

Maybe they figure that's not a necessary part of what they provide, or that the whole world knows about the suspension anyway.

I suspect few people in "the whole world" know who Michael Chavis is.

The whole world that follows baseball, I mean. Don't be so literal.

Certainly the vast majority of people who read SoxProspects would know, I expect.
