The good stuff , or the more economical store brand ?

Funny thing is, the economical store brand is more often than not every bit as good as the name brand.

Actually quite often better.

The store brand is often made by one of the name brand suppliers (in many cases the size or shape of the container gives it away). But the store itself might have tighter specification and more stringent quality requirements than the name brand. Stores can ask for a better product and demand it for less money and then pass the savings on to you, the customer.

And that’s the story about why the Red Sox signed Jenrry Mejia...

Not to mention when 90% of pitching prospects in your system are relievers it makes no sense to pay $80M, 4 years for a closer with so many expiring contracts on the horizon.

Nick , Were there only two choices here ? 80 million or nothing at all ? No other options?

The head-scratcher is still the Pearce signing. If you're that adamant about staying below the hell threshold, why are you signing a 36-year old platoon bat for 6.25 million plus tax? I'm happy to have Pearce, but it really added to the constraints, you might say.

maybe they are expecting to sell a s*** ton of Pearce jerseys?

Option 1. Kimbrel over Eovaldi

Option 2. Kimbrel over combination of Pearce, Holt, Nunez, etc

I actually think both options would have been okay with majority of fan base.

I hate to say it because we knew going into it BUT PABLO'S CONTRACT CONTINUES TO SCREW US OVER. It would have been nice to have his $17M.

Local boy turned WS hero? That will never sell a jersey in this market!

How is Steven Pearce a local boy?

He was born and grew up in Florida and went to college in South Carolina...

I meant other , cheaper options for closer or just late inning relief . For example : The Yankees signed Ottavino for three years at 9 mil per . The Mets signed Familia for three years at 10 mil per .

Good stuff.

Though I am still opposed to the Mejia signing for reasons that have nothing to do with baseball and economical brands.

Funny, I just posted something similar to you in another thread.

This is why I care, when people ask why do you care how much the owner spend when it's not your money.

Because it can possibly tie our hands in future moves.

No way I want Kimbrel over Eovaldi.

I doubt anyone would take Nunez and his contract, so option 2 is not really and even money choice.

...and if we really had an unlimited budget, signings like Pablito would not matter.

1.) feltman is the real deal. I saw him pitch live for tcu and for Greenville. No doubt in my mind, he is already top 3 in ability to get hitters out when compared to the current group of relievers we have.

2.) Hernandez should be in the pen. Again he could contribute in 2019.

3.) Henry is nuts to not be all in on the 2019 season by not bringing kimbrel back. Why let a few dollars stand between us and another duck boat parade.

Let's see how Feltman does vs AA and AAA hitters before deciding. Same with D Hernandez, who needs to start gaining some control.

Kimbrel does not guarantee a duck boat parade, but he pretty much would guarantee an irreversible cliff after 2019.

That's pretty extreme.

thanks for the 3 years CK culminating in a parade. good luck with your next team. all the best to you and your family and we wish you nothing but great success (except when pitching against us of course).

Oh, you will sign a 1 year contract for $18MM? welcome back!

$18M/1 would not hurt on the "rebuild", except for the drop in our draft slot by 10 picks. IMO, it would be worth it. A 2 or more year deal would mean saying good bye to someone I like more than the (somewhat) aging CK.

Sorry, his dad who is also named Steve was from Rehoboth.

Ok. As someone named after his Dad, I can tell you you are not the first one to mix them both up...

Can we stop the whining about how this team is being “held back” by the contracts of Sandoval and Pedroia?

Yes the two combine for about $31mill in AAV. But that still leaves Dombrowski $200 mill to build a team with. That’s not the most difficult task. This year, probably 25-28 teams will have payrolls below $200mill in AAV. And plenty of them have bad contracts as well. Plenty of those contracts are a lot worse and a lot longer than Sandoval. (Go check out the Giants payroll, for example.)

The Sox don’t have Kimbrel or any other expensive relievers by choice. Dombrowski decided to pursue Pearce and Eovaldi and handle the bullpen the way he has historically. And while he did have issues with the Tiger bullpen in the postseason, this Sox team might be looking at using Eovaldi as their postseason closer as they see what works during the regular season for relievers and roles...

I just remember it being mentioned during the WS at some point. I knew he was a Sox fan and that there was some sort of local tie in.
