Worried about his character? No.

But no matter how great a pitcher he's been for us, and no matter what the reasoning behind it, that was a childish thing for him to do and Sale was wrong to do it.

I thought it was kinds funny. Plus, those uniforms deserved to be chopped up.

I think there was more to it than ugly uniforms. I believe there was a lot of unrest because of the issue with LaRoche's son and how the FO handled it, and cutting up the uniforms was more of a symptom of that unrest.

That was my impression from Chicago.

I mean, go look at the White Sox uniform history. Now bear in mind none of those have ever been cut up by a player. Not the shorts. Not the wide lapels. None, and no team in MLB has as long of a history with hideous and t It wasn’t about the uniforms.

Probably right, but who knows.

It never bothered me what he did.

I just remember some being worried about Sale's character or negative clubhouse influence.

Who are we to judge right? I don't think that anyone watching from a distance liked what they saw with respect to that incident but I certainly know nothing about what led to it. I'm only basing what I know about Chris Sale on what he has given us since coming to Boston. To be honest with you, anyone who judges him based on that incident in a serious way is just one other person I don't really listen much to. No counters!

Mature adults?

There’s no way anyone can excuse that episode as anything but a very immature response. Because that’s all it was, and I cannot imagine anything Sale would say that would make anyone think “Oh? That’s why? Ok, it all makes sense now.”

But recognizing that incident for what it was is 100% exclusive from rooting for Sale to pitch like he has and stay healthy and , yes, if you like, sign an extension with Boston....

It was also perhaps a teeny bit immature, or shall we say hot-headed, when David Ortiz pounded a bullpen phone into plastic smithereens.

Once again notin here we go - no one said that it was anything but an immature act. I would simply say that anyone who brings that incident up at this point in time is someone who just wants to be heard. That is it. I tend not to support people who do that sort of crap and that is all that it is. Initially when moon brought it up, i recognized his comment fro what it was - humorous. Discussing it in any seroiuos manner in some queer little attempt to disparage him is just ********.

I didn't mean to bring up the uniform cutting as a topic of debate, but when things are slow, it happens.

The way I had hoped the conversation would lead to is how hard it is for fans (and GMs, too) to really know what kind of clubhouse effect any player will have on a team. I remember some being worried about Sale' effect based on this incident.

I remember how much people praised Josh Beckett for bringing his "winning attitude" to the 2007 Red Sox. The guy was on pace for becoming one of the best playoff pitchers of all time. Then, suddenly, he's a cancer.

I'm not doubting player attitudes matter, but it is hard to judge from very close up, let alone as far away as us fans are.

It's when you say things like "Who are we to judge right? I don't think that anyone watching from a distance liked what they saw with respect to that incident but I certainly know nothing about what led to it", it makes it sound like you want to justify it.

Sale was out of line in that incident, and several others preceding it. The Red Sox benefited because it all did lead to his trade out of Chicago. I don't think it is any coincidence that Sale and Eaton were the two most critical players on the White Sox for the whole incident, and they were the first two players traded away, despite both being on team-friendly deals that teams rebuild around rather than trade away to rebuild with.

But really, that entire scenario was the fault of Adam LaRoche and Kenny Williams. LaRoche for putting the team in that spot to begin with, and while Williams really probably did do the right thing, he allowed it to escalate into a war with his players. But this in no way justifies anything Sale (or Eaton) did, which was a lot, and it all culminted with the incident of him cutting up jerseys.

But hey, it helped the Red Sox get a ring and he has been much better behaved since coming to Boston...

When I first heard about the incident, I laughed. When I saw the uniforms, I thought they were awful. I never saw the incident as a ding on Sale's character or clubhouse influence- plus or minus.

I don't disagree with either one of these posts. That still doesn't excuse Sale from that childish behavior.

No notin sorry you are wrong once again as you try to read things that you want to see into what I wrote. I'm actually not the kind of person who justifies poor behavior. Once again, simply for your benefit, when Moon mentioned the incident I think that it was meant to be humorous. Seems to me someone else wanted to pass judgement on him once again. Personally i think that that cheap attempt to create controversy was absolute ********. it would be kind of like me redundantly saying once again that I think Manny Ramirez was an idiot and that the team was much better off without him. I won't do that. I'm not going to judge him.

Look at that, silly me how could I ever have said Manny when i meant Hanley. You don't suppose it is possible that I think there were similarities between the two do you. How could i ever take such little cheap shots at true boston heroes. Oh well, there you go. Everybody is fair game I guess.

I think there is a possibility that some of your posts are very ambiguous.

If someone (rightly) calls out Sale’s behavior in Chicago as immature and the response is “Who are we to judge....”, that certainly can look like an attempt to overlook what he did. Would you agree that’s possible?

Or like in another thread, I was talking about the Sox weak farm, and you replied about their potential to develop and in one mentioned watching the development of Benitendi into a rising star. Do you think that could be interpreted that you were saying at one point, Benintendi was also a weak prospect?

Now given this medium, it is possible to respond to other posts and create confusion. But that only adds to the ambiguity.

they both have dreads? :)

well, one was one of the GREATEST players to ever play for the Boston Red Sox and the other was at the tail end of a career.

One of them helped break the curse that plagued us for almost a century and launched us into the success that is now the Boston Red Sox.

watch this video to be reminded how fun it was to have him.....

I enjoyed watching them both Slasher. Two great great athletes.

I think that notin yes some times my comments could create a little confusion if people try to read too much into them. With respect to Benintendi my comments had a great deal to do with his size as listed compared to when i saw him play in Portland. He was smaller than advertised. Being a former athlete and coach, I don't see that comment as saying that Benintendi would not become a future star at all. Now with respect to the latest comments relating to Sale's immature actions of a few years ago, my response which I do not regret at all came as a result of a posters bringing it up in a serious manner and not simply to be humorous. Just me I guess but I saw it as petty and somewhat nasty. I think that Sale deserves better from us. I recognized what he did as somewhat immature but I have seen nothing from him since he came to Boston to indicate that he is anything but my type of player. He takes his craft seriously and by all accounts is a super teammate respected for what he is. Oh and if you hadn't noticed I don't mind at all adding just a touch of confusion here. Might be even what I do. I know myself pretty well and it is the few on here who are prone to condescension in their attempts to try to convince others that they know everything about everything that I likely won't hesitate to respond to. But you know what notin - seriously thanks for reading my posts and responding.

the exact EXACT same thing could be said about Hanley Remirez but you have no trouble taking shots at him over and over again........

I will add slasher that yes I am a little biased. Is it ok today to be biased or does that automatically make me a racist or a bigot or whatever? I freely admit that I'm not a big fan of Hanley Ramirez. If you want to think that it is because he wears his hair the way he does, you can. I might even have other reasons. I'm ok with my feelings. That being said, I still appreciated his athleticism while he was here.

When Sale's jersey-cutting and Hanley's dreads are making a comeback as conversation topics, you know it's been a long and boring ass winter. Ready for some baseball, please.
