The Sox have made 27yo career minor leaguer Domingo Tapia a non- roster invitee to spring training.

Tapia’s best pitch is mid-90s sinking fastball that Fangraphs Mike Newman once called “ the best pitch I’ve ever scouted.” But that was back in 2012.

Tapia has also been known to have serious control issues and no secondary stuff. His K/BB was 1.65 in AAA last year, largely due to a high walk rate and a dwindling strikeout rate, which is not encouraging. But on the bright side, he has managed to keep his ground ball rates in the minors very high...

It sounds like he's a starter, right? Who will be used, I assume, as a reliever. If he gets a lot of ground balls, the k's mean less.

One thing about him is that he's big 6-3 250 pounds. EDIT: another site lists him at 6-4 186. (ha) I wonder which one will show up in camp??

He used to be a starter, but his control issues and lack of secondary stuff pushed him into a relief role...

if he has a real wipeout sinker that is getting groundballs, it is worth kicking the tires on. For a reliever, if you have one premium pitch - there is at least a place to start.

Right - he's an invitee ... I expect little, but I can see why they're doing it

Brasier getting the closer job at $550K is no riskier than giving Kimbrel 5 year, $80M contract to do the same job.

Is it just as likely that Brasier's career is finally taking off as likely as Kimbrel's career is beginning to decline?

Which option is riskier for Sox? You can make adjustments to mistake option #1. How do you make adjustment to mistake option #2? What say you, Mr. Pablo Sandoval?

I think you're mixing up the baseball risk and the economic risk a little here.

But at the end of the day aren't they the same thing?

Looks like we might find out if that's true this year. :)

I read this morning that the Sox have signed another pitcher, Josh Smith, (along with catcher Oscar Hernandez) to minor league deals.

It's interesting that last year, I don't think we had any of these depth pitching signings, much to the dismay of some of us here. This year, we've already had several. Maybe Dombrowski really is going with the 'throw stuff against the wall' strategy this year.

Nah. I still expect a Dombrowski to get us someone along the lines of Kimbrel.

Not necessarily. If John Henry approves signing Kimbrel for 4 years and 60 million and incurs all the extra tax etc., we're better off baseball-wise, he's worse off economically.

I think so. I'm guessing the strategy all along was to get one 'name guy' and do the rest with dumpster diving. You might almost call that a restrained approach, huh? :)

No doubt it's a gamble because if the Sox win another WS he may be able to recoup his "investment" in Kimbrel through increased ticket sales, t-shirts, etc. But if they fail to make the playoffs.... ugh.

It must be nice to have several million dollars to be able to gamble with. :)

Current estimate of John Henry's net worth = 2.6 BILLION or 26,000 MILLION :P

Or 52,000,000,000 nickels...

According to Forbes (and if my math is correct) the Red Sox franchise was worth about $27MM after the 2017 season. It's probably more than that today. That's about 10% of his total worth. So he probably can gamble with a few million without worrying about altering his standard of living. :)

The Sox franchise has been valued by Forbes at $2.8billion, and is expected to be exceed $3billion this year.

The net worth of the Red Sox is greater than the net worth of John Henry...

But are these pre-tax or after-tax values? :)

Yes. That says the same thing.

2,800 million = 2.8 billion.

John Henry’s net worth is $2.6 billion or $2.5 billion, depending on which source you believe.

Therefore the Sox franchise has a greater net worth than John Henry. This does make sense because Henry, like all sports team owners, isn’t the sole owner of the franchise...

I assume taxes are a liability so it would be post-tax, but you know more about that than me...

In this case I have no idea if they factor in accrued taxes on accrued capital gains or not.

Leave it to a CPA to muddy the waters! ;) ;)

Got it. I mistook the comma for a period. Thanks. (I thought it was low, but who am I to argue with Forbes? :) )

Playoffs or no playoffs, John Henry will be all right. No go fund me pages needed.

Ha. Almost.

I had believed Dombrowski would get us 2 'name guys', but with all the dumpster diving, I'm now thinking he'll only get one.
