Normally the retirement of a mediocre to borderline player like Tuiasosopo is barely newsworthy and certainly not worth a thread on its own. But Matt Tuiasosopo is a rare case.

It’s somewhat common for family members to play the same sport professionally whether it’s father and son or two or more brothers. It’s much rarer to find a father and son who play different sports professionally or two brothers who play two different professional sports.

But as his father Manu and brother Marques both played in the NFL, Matt Tuiasosopo has the rare distinction of having both a father and brother who played a different sport professionally. Not sure if I can think of another similar case, especially where all reached the highest level in their respective sports.

Or maybe I’m the only one intrigued by this...

I don't know that I would say I'm intrigued by this, but I find it interesting that when I saw the name Tuiasosopo, I immediately thought it was a football player. It's interesting because I rarely watch football, yet I vaguely remember there being a football player by that name. I watch baseball every day during the season, yet can't recall a baseball player by that name.

You're right, not worth a thread of its own.

Just an irrelevant side note here: I saw him play this past season as a member of the New Britain Bees of the Independent League

I was actually (no longer) secretly hoping it would generate some posts about any professional athletes in different sports, ideally seeing if anyone could think of other athletes who played a different sport than a father and brother. But hoping for anything along this line.

But if you have a better topic for the General Baseball Forum, have At it... :)

There's also Kiki and Coco Vandeweghe. Kiki is the current EVP of the NBA and his niece Coco is a noted tennis player

Kiki also had a good career as a player in the NBA.

There are a lot of instances of a father and their child playing different sports.

Calvin (football) and Grant (basketball) Hill

Mark (football) and Danny (baseball) Schlereth

Yannick (tennis) and Joakim (basketball) Noah

Ken Sr (boxing) and Ken Jr (football) Norton

To name a few.

And there are probably as many instances of brothers playing different pro sports, for example

Chris (baseball) and Craig (football) James

Mark (baseball) and Dan (football) McGwire

Nate (football) and Kevin (basketball) Burleson

Klay (basketball) and Trayce (baseball) Thompson

Matt Tuiasosopo is on both lists. Is he alone there?

We can't omit Pat Mahomes , who is having a sensational year in the NFL . His dad did a stint with the Sox .

Such an incredibly obvious one, I’m embarrassed to have forgotten him...

There's also a younger brother who is a budding tennis star. What a family!

Nelly Korda is also my celebrity crush, so I am grateful you brought them up

It was your post that made me think of them, so it must have been some sort of karmic thing.

Is some of that where people with certain athletic ability could play a number of sports well and just choose to play one?
