Ok... I'll say it... I'm not looking forward to this.

Papi was a team leader in Boston and contributed to WSC's but I don't see him as being good in the booth.

First of all, I speak two languages (English and Downeast Maine :)) and I frequently have trouble understanding what Papi is saying.

Also, while I do understand that he's enjoying himself, he can't seem to utter a sentence without laughing during it and I don't find the jocularity enhancing. [understatement]

I know that he at one time was one of the faces of baseball and as such he'll be a good draw for Fox Sports but I'm not at all sure he's cut out for the booth.

Ok. Trash me. Tell me what a bad fan I am. Ugh.

I doesn't preclude him from working for the club necessarily ... he was doing studio work the last 2 postseasons ... not much to see here.

I have to agree with you here, he's terrible on TV.

And, unlike his playing days, he can't just drink a "milkshake" to fix his deficiencies......

I think Fox Sports likes the idea of having Ortiz and ARod as co-analysts.

No matter how bad Ortiz might be (and I'm not saying that I agree with you), he's 100 times easier to listen to than ARod is. At least Ortiz is likeable.

What is funny is that early ARod was very likeable on TV. (like he really likes baseball) But this year he was not nearly as good with more exposure.

OMG YES! But that bar is so low it's on the ground to begin with!!

Fox Sports is one of the major things that's wrong with baseball, irrespective of who's in the booth.

That most of the announcers at the national level do not seem to like current players is a real problem.

My understanding is that ARod is actually quite good as an analyst. There is no doubt that he loves the game and knows it very well. I am just so turned off by him that I can't listen to him.

Actually, Papi and ARod are good buddies. Another example that the fans take things way more seriously than the players do .

Baseball is life or death for us fans. Of course we take it seriously!

I'm trying to figure out who said A-Rod and Ortiz didn't or shouldn't get along.

I thought it was common knowledge that they were friends.

As former players go, it’s easier to find a worse analyst than ARod than it is to find a better one. Just be thankful FOX didn’t bring back Eric Byrnes...

Papi needs to be making better decisions as to who he hangs out with. :D

A bit more seriously, many/most Sox fans have an intense dislike for ARod and at the same time a love for Papi. Therefore we're conflicted and don't understand how a nice guy like Papi can stand being around a douche like Arod.

Papi is also friends with Jeter.

I'm fine with it. The main thing is that he kicked their asses on the field.

Yankees fans are not the enemy. We're all Americans after all. We're just Americans with different rooting interests.

Bit of post-Veterans' Day perspective.

To take it out of perspective ... I hate the Yankees Suck chant. We've won a lot ... the Yankees are just another team.

I couldn't figure it out either, and it is common knowledge.

Most national baseball commentary is old people pining for the olden days - that is the real problem.

In Chicago, we have a former Cy Young winner by the name of Steve Stone doing color commentary. And I will tell you right now he is absolutely the best in the business. FOX needs to bring him on board...

FOX used Eric Byrnes and Vernon Wells one postseason for the desk analysts. Both were still active players whose seasons had ended. Wells was professional and insightful and more enjoyable than I would have guessed. Byrnes was a scatter-brained clown who looked like he woke up 5 minutes before air time...

I do vaguely remember that, I just don't remember the specifics of how good he was. I always thought of Byrnes as a spaz, for lack of a better term, which is why I liked him as a player. (I apologize if anyone is offended by that term.) Pat Neshek is another one who falls in that category.

Ortiz was a great Red Sox player and is now a great team ambassador/fan, but he is not a good announcer in a pre or post game booth.

Perhaps he can come across better as a game analyst, but I am going to have to see and hear it before I believe it.

We'll see what happens. The national level booths are filled with calcified "old man yells at cloud" types - and so turning it over is not a bad thing. And for a game which has been so enhanced by Latino presence - to have a less whitebread announcing situation is worth exploring.
