This issue had been simmering for a few weeks since moonslav contended that a full year of Nathan Eovaldi should be an upgrade over Drew Pomeranz.

Moonslav could be right ... or not.

Well, I think he's clearly right that the 2019 Eovaldi should be an upgrade over the 2018 Pomeranz. Should only implies probability.

Exactly.

Although I usually provide only statistics and let the reader draw conclusions (or not), when I offer an opinion it is almost always in the cautious terms of "likely" or "probably" or "perhaps" or such.

Including whether J.D. Martinez would sign with a club other than the Red Sox.:)

Yes, I agree, and many were very high on Pom last spring. I think someone was even saying we should extend him.

Yes, he could be.

I was pretty high on Pom last spring, but not enough to want an extension.

Does pedrioa start the year in Boston? I still think he should start the year on the 60 day dL and join us August 1st and give us a boost for August through november.

He is not right yet, but light years ahead of last spring. Another couple months and he could be a key contributor down the stretch for us.

He will be. Book it.

Just a thought. Why do people get so excited about the NCAA brackets ? It's like if MLB had five wild cards in each league and also allowed all of the minor league pennant winners into the post season playoffs.

For a lot of people, they went to college and get excited for their alma mater. None of us are alums of the Boston Red Sox.

I also see my alma mater was overloooked AGAIN!!

Oh NCAA Committee, when will you acknowledge the basketball prowess of Worcester Polytechnic Institute?

I am a long time fan of Duke and follow them closely as I do the Sox. I guess it is an acquired taste.

Not me. I have actually boycotted US college sports. The money and the corruption have turned them into a debacle in my view.

WPI lost their appeal with the advent of the shot clock. The stall became obsolete.

I used to manage a bracket for over 20 years.

I have won a bracket 4 times. My first was when I picked Indiana U back in 1981.

I should have won 5. Back in 1985, I was all over Villanova, but changed my mind after G'town beat them twice in the regular season.

I won in 1992 with Duke. Duke carried me again in 2001.

My last was Florida in 2007.

I'm going with Duke this year.

I love this tourney. The energy level is so high.

That’s very true.

It’s weird to think the professional leagues filled with drug use, gun arrests, and criminal violence are the honest leagues...

"Honest" may be a stretch.

I'm still convinced the NBA is fixed.

I still like watching college sports. For many of these kids, it's their one moment of glory.

The NBA isn’t fixed. People say that about every league they don’t like.

NCAA football does have severe issues with hypocrisy when it comes to punishing players, especially SEC players...

Best OF Ever?

The Red Sox outfield in 2018 was -- and this should really go without saying -- just fantastic. Mookie Betts had an all-time season on his way to winning the Most Valuable Player Award. Andrew Benintendi improved in almost every way from the 2017 that placed him second in the

Really just a dumb article.

How could they be the "best ever" when they don't even crack the top 10 WAR?

The article was clearly about expectations for 2019 not past WAR.

I doubt they come close to the best WAR ever, even if they count JD's WAR as a DH/OF'er, but with improvements by JBJ and Beni, they could end up with a damn good combined WAR.

facts matter.

They were great, clearly. Just looking at production during games played in the outfield, so not even counting Martinez' time at DH, the Red Sox outfielders were first in average (.300), on-base percentage (.380), slugging percentage (.518), OPS (.899), wOBA (.381), wRC+ (139), Wins Above Replacement (18.6), and ... well, you get the point. The Red Sox won 108 games and the World Series. The outfield was a big part of why.

They were so great, in fact, that they ranked as one of the best collections in history.
