Once Sept 1st comes around, we can rest everybody.

If the Red Sox can maintain a sizeable lead they can start using Bobby Poyner, Robby Scott, Haley, and Cuevas in key relief situations in September, and give the regular relievers some rest.

What do you think of the idea of adding Travis Lakins to the 40 man roster so that he can get some work (and experience) in the major leagues in September? They can easily create an open spot on the 40 man roster.

Once ERod comes back, we'll have another long reliever in the pen.

I think the idea is to make ERod (or Price) a dominant one or two inning reliever, kind of like Andrew Miller, and have ERod (or Price) pitch in some key late inning spots in the playoffs. I don't like the idea of using ERod as a long reliever. Instead, I want to capitalize on his potential to dominate in shorter stints.

It'll be interesting to see how the Red Sox handle this. When Erod returns, the Red Sox will have 5 really good options for four playoff rotation spots. Due to injury, and potentially dominant stuff in shorter stints, ERod does seem to be the logical choice right now to move to the pen. Even though Price is on a roll, I still don't trust him in October, however.

Shepherd's already on the 40 man, so maybe he gets a call-up.

Wright might come back, too.

Walden can give innings, too. We could have a 22 man staff in September.

Sale

Price

Porcello

ERod

Eovaldi

Johnson

Velazquez

Pomeranz

Wright

Haley

Shepherd

Kimbrel

Kelly

If ERod looks good, I think Eovaldi gets a try as our "Andrew Miller type."

I get it. Our pen has looked bad in many a win lately, and it is only a matter of time, before it catches up with us, unless it turns itself around. Now that Pom is in the pen, and can go 3-5 innings, maybe we can rest the others more often. Once ERod comes back, we'll have another long reliever in the pen. Once Sept 1st comes around, we can rest everybody.

Maybe a waiver wire deal is in the works, but I think we'll be okay as is.

There will almost certainly be no waiver wire deal. Cleveland would make a claim on anybody worth anything, blocking anyone further up the food chain. And if they didn’t, the Astros or Yankees would.

So what did I miss this weekend? Easy 4 game sweep? I'm fine with that.

Got off to kind of a scary start falling behind 8-3 in the first game, but outscored 'em 31-9 after that.

Yeah I saw that on Friday and I turned away. I knew we had a chance though since any of these little leaguers could drop 19 runs on the Orioles' pitching staff.

I watched this game at the beach, but also the PGA, so no time to contribute to the thread. I was really mad when Cora replaced Sale after 5 innings and just 68 pitches because the score was just 2-0 and our bullpen was/is suspect. But they came thru and Cora is now being congratulated for his wisdom in not letting Sale throw too many innings/pitches. Plus, and I do give him credit here, he probably figured our lineup would get to their bullpen, which they did in the 9th.

The pen seems to be way off of late. Consistently wild and seemingly rattled when they get in games. Today we saw Thornburg, Barnes and Kimbrel all have issues. Hope somehow with rest and perhaps some different coaching they can throw strikes when they come in with a good lead. Baltimore is not that strong offensively, so what would happen against a team that is if the BP comes in wild..

Our pen, along with the rest of the team, can sure use a day off.

Considering the number of innings that our pen had to cover this weekend, between Porcello's and Eovaldi's short starts, Sale only pitching 5 innings, and the double header, I'd say the pen did a pretty good job.

No, they haven't gone out there and dominated in 1-2-3 fashion, but in fairness to them, they are probably a bit tired.

Just put up the zeros.

Look at the Yankee pen... by far, the best in MLB. Even they have looked very shaky lately.

I watched the Nats/Cubs game last night. It was a 1-0 game when the starters left the game, both after 7 innings. It ended up being a 4-3 game. Six runs scored off of the bullpens in the 9th inning. Great game, BTW.

Would these teams claim Jamie Shields with that contract?

I said anyone worth anything.

Not sure why the Red Sox would want him though, he’s a starter and has only made 2 relief appearances in his 13 big league seasons. Plus he’s not that good.
