Do you put JBJ, & HALF the farm up, just to win the WS in 2018?

I would be ok with That?

I think????

I would bet he doesn't move. Nationals will want a lot, and other teams will be scared of the price due to his impending free agency and due to his pretty mediocre season, neither side will agree on value and nothing happens, at least that is how I feel about the situation.

A lot of drooling for a guy batting .220.

And why has he done so poorly in a contract year of all times?

Before his offensive woes I would have put money on him signing with the Yankees for 2019. Now, I bet he returns to DC on a shorter contract.

No single player can move the needle that much. Besides, the Red Sox are pretty good right now, and they have enough depth that they can actually just not play Bradley if Cora loses confidence in him.

We can do without him. Let someone else take the plunge.

Harper's BABIP is stupidly low. He is also walking at an absurd pace. He is on pace for his highest strikeout total. I think a change of scenery will do him wonders.

You may be right but I don’t think the Sox have any trade bullets left.

If we needed an outfielder, I'd be happy to roll the dice on him rebounding in August-September.....but we don't.

Yup.

I think there is more reason to believe in him that not for sure. At the same time he is a 2 month rental - and you have to price him accordingly.

Actually, no. You aren't thinking.

Even trading JBJ for Harper straight up is questionable.

The Nats are just 5 1/2 games out , behind two young teams that could well struggle down the stretch. They are every bit as much in contention as the Yankees. I don't see why they would throw in the towel now.

I was thinking that too.

But the Nats have definitely underperformed. If I'm Rizzo, I'm adding someone at the deadline (sends a message to your clubhouse), firing Dave Martinez, and hiring Joe Girardi. Maybe that would light a fire....

Joe Girardi is a proven successful manager. Martinez has been a failure thus far.

With their many injuries and the underperforming Harper, I think it's incorrect to blame the manager. I'm not knowledgeable about whether Martinez is popular with the players or not, so it's hard to speculate if changing the manager would make a difference. Unless the Nats get a large overpay for Harper, I doubt they trade him.

I would probably do that if I didn't also believe Harper is going to want a huge amount of money.

Any trade for Harper would be a rental only.

I agree. And I think this sums up the picture.

Last night, there were reports that the Guardians were in on Harper, but this news fizzled.

Unless the WS is guaranteed, there is no way I would ever do that.

I've been reading that there is a lot of trouble in the Nats' clubhouse. Obviously, you have to take these things with a grain of salt, so who knows what's really going on? Didn't they just fire Baker last year after a fairly successful season because of clubhouse problems?

Was it clubhouse problems or the continued lack of playoff success?

Good question. I don't know.

On a related note, I just read this:

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo confirmed Wednesday morning that Shawn Kelley was designated for assignment for being "disrespectful to the organization."

Kelley slammed his glove down in frustration and stared into the Nationals' dugout after giving up a three-run homer in the ninth inning of Tuesday night's 25-4 blowout win over the Mets. The 34-year-old right-hander apparently had a problem with being brought into such a lopsided game. "You’re either in or you’re in the way," said Rizzo. "He was in the way." Kelley posted a 3.34 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 32/5 K/BB ratio in 32 1/3 total innings this season with Washington and should quickly find a new place to pitch.

Two things about this:

1. That kind of supports the clubhouse issue thing.

2. Is this someone the Sox might be interested in picking up? I don't know much about him, but he wouldn't cost anything.
