Christian Vazquez fractured his pinky finger on his throwing hand. Cora said he's going on the DL. Corresponding move will be made tomorrow. They will know more Monday.

Blake Swihart will back up Leon.

Well, all the Swihart fans will be getting to see more of him.

I don't really see the need to make a move for a catcher. Leon has been on fire lately and is perfectly suitable to be the main catcher, especially if its only a few weeks. His defense is great and he's been better hitter than Vaz

Agree, don't panic. A couple of years ago, Swihart played the whole 2nd half of season, and did real good. Let's see.

I would love to see us make a move, especially for Ramos, but I also believe that Sandy is perfectly capable of carrying the load for awhile. The pitchers love throwing to Sandy.

Did Kelly get injured last night? He was pulled mid inning for Workman when he was doing fine.

He got light headed, dizzy. That's a bit scary

And Swihart as the backup?

Looks like we will be seeinga bit more Swi. But Cora did mention Sandy can do most of the work if needed.

Broken finger on the throwing hand. That's got to be a month at least IMO.

Come on Swi.

Time to look at the trade market for a catcher that can hit consistently, perfect time to do it

Ummmm....no!

Vasquez is not out for the season. He will likely be out for maybe three weeks or so. If the injury is more severe than what we are being told then sure, lets find someone to replace him. If not, what do we do with the guy we find for three weeks once Vas returns?

A valid point, especially when I think Sandy might not be up to catching 4 out of every 5 games. That said, there's a 4 day ASG break just ahead, which will help, and generally I am inclined to think this is Swihart's shot and might not hurt the team. If Cora and DD decide otherwise and get help, I will be OK with that too.

Best case scenario, Swihart actually INCREASES his trade value instead of where he is right now, which is ZERO.

Looked like he had some serious heartburn, which is fair since he often gives the same to us fans

Swihart can probably back up at catcher adequately enough. This is a great time to not panic.

For a very short stretch maybe. Swihart needs to rebuild his swing for one thing. He is a wreck and you don't suddenly go from wreck to even solid just by getting playing time mid-season. We need vaz and sandy certainly for the stretch run and definitely for the post season.

He's been hitting pretty well lately

If they get the guy in 3 games a week you won't remember VAZ

I broke a finger on my left hand player a hard ground ball 3 weeks ago and have been wearing a splint since. The prognosis is mid August to be back to normal. I mention that as an idea of how long Vaz is likely to be out. I would guess a good 8 weeks.

Sandy and Vaz have split the load, 60 to Vaz and 40 to Sandy. Anybody that thinks that Sandy will suddenly be able to play some giant number of games with Swi as an adequate backup for very long is dreaming and forgetting vaz for swi is a pipe dream. Fortunately the entire league is crap but for 4 teams. If the sox get by with this for anything longer than a nanosecond, that will be the reason why. In any event, they will need vaz back in time to be ready for the end of the season and post season.

You swi lovers remind me of the crowd that keeps waiting for JBJ to hit for a whole season or even half even or even half a half of season....another pipe dream.

If Swi can recover in real terms, he will need an off season of solid work and a new team to boot.

Based on youth alone, I think that it might be substantially less.

Crack me up, you think we're losing Carlton Fisk. What CV can do Leon can do, and Swihart will be OK.

Ain't that the truth!!! Vaz is a decent defensive catcher but if Swihart can keep the ball in front of him, I don't think that anyone should be to worried about this one.

This isn’t a loss. Vasquez is not a great framer. He’s a good blocker. He’s deadly on the running game. He also cannot hit. Leon is a better hitter and what you may lose a bit in the running game, you’ll gain in Leon’s other abilities. I also think this is a spot the Sox look to upgrade. A lineup that’s 5 deep will struggle come playoff time.

Yes, I have him by 50 years and it is his pinky finger which might be less of a bother.
