Beni couldn't keep up the incredible streak he was on. All hitters have ups and downs during the long season. But don't judge him based on most recent results.

He's hitting 285/369/508 - 877 OPS - with 13 HR and 53 RBI in 80 games. He also has 15 steals in 16 attempts and his defense has been great lately.

So a Sox player in his second full season is on pace for 25HR, over 100RBI, 30 SB and an .877 OPS and people think he is declining?

How can a player be declining when he is on pace for career highs in nearly every category?

He is in a small slump. He just needs to adjust to what they are doing. He has a good eye and a sweet swing. I had hoped he would adjust while at Yankee stadium and take advantage of the short right field. Tough pitcher today so they all may have problems.

He's having a career-best season. He will have stretches when he doesn't hit. Everyone has those.

Generally, the term declining is reserved for players on the downside of a career, not for players having a rough week...

Benintendi has been terrific. Especially with his actual slow start - there is reason to expect things will be better in general the rest of the year. He is a stud.

It’s reminiscent of that year when Jon Valentin hit like .118 in April and went on to hit over .300 (for what I think was the only time in his career)....

I used the word in relation to the use of the string word "Rising". He certaining isn't rising now and he isn't treading water so what is he doing/

Last night the guys on Fox were talking about how smart a runner Beni is. My eys rolled when I heard that.

LOL!! He's not a smart anything. national announcers never know the team like the fans. Very annoying. There is an option on MLBTV to choose no announcer feed. You just get the sounds of the game. It is great.

That's because they were considering stolen bases only, which he has been very successful with. Stolen base success, however, does not necessarily a smart runner make.

Yes. Avg is down.

Yes. He had a poor start

Yes. He is a dope on the BP's, but has improved significantly

Yes. He's just above avg in the OF, but plenty good enough

Yes. Like most players he has ups & downs

Yes. You should have seen JDM's latest 30 games .264 avg just a few weeks ago while Beni was CARRYING the team

Yes!!!! The kid has been, will be, and is an ALL STAR!

It's baseball folks. This ain't bowling.

p.s. besides the lower avg, those are DAMNED FINE NUMBERS still.

YES! His yearly stats ARE ALL-STAR numbers!

No! To those who judge offensive production game to game, inning by inning.... NO! We have no f***ing idea what you're talking about.

He's made some bonehead plays on the base paths, no doubt about that. But 15 steals in 16 attempts is pretty impressive.

Absolutely! Early on in the year, he made bone-headed base running mistakes every other night. I said so LOUDLY!

That does not happen with any regularity any more this season. My opinion? His s*** start at the plate was eating him alive. He had now hell of a Spring Training, then a s*** start. He couldn't figure out what the hell changed, and it was tearing him up. His head was up his arss, and he kept making these base running mistakes because of that.

He will even out.

Beni is breaking out this year! The kid is going to be something special. Wait til he improves in the OF..... The kid is going to sign a minor monster contract upon FA.

Let's hope it doesn't come down to free agency. Sox have to find a way keep him before that day comes.

Beni is still somewhat inexperienced so when the pitchers find a way to cool him off, he needs to make an adjustment and he will. I don't count games where the team faces legitimate aces, as the entire team will struggle, but when the team racks up hits and runs and a guy strikes out, then there is something going on that needs adjustment. In Beni's case it seemed to be the high fastball that started to give him trouble.

With D. Price still being owed @150 million, why the concern about Beni?

Price had an awful game and I had commented on him previously. Beni has cooled off somewhat as well and it is worth a comment whenever anyone in the lineup is beginning to struggle. This is afterall, a team game.

What's your final line on him for the year?

I say he hits...

Close to .300+, .400 obp, .475+ slgl, circa .900 OPS

20 HR +/- 2

85+ rbi's

90+ runs scored

I think there is also a real chance that he heats up soon, & these numbers go a bit higher?

I love the kids bat.

I hate him in CF, but he is acceptable. Honestly, I'd rather see Mookie in CF when JDM plays, and put Beni in RF?

Still has trouble on the basepaths, but sees some daylight from his arss.

Well, we're getting down to it.... so here's the update.

135 529 99 154 38 6 16 80 67 101 20 3 .291 .369 .476 .846

I was a bit over-optimistic, but the kid had a break-out year none the less. :)

Nice job Beni!

Beni has had a good year and has contributed a lot to the teams success. His power did fall off in the second half as he tended to hit a majority of his balls to left and to center. Maybe next year he will pull more frequently, which would help his HR total.

This was the same thing that Bogey was doing a lot last year. Cora told him to look to drive the ball rather than slapping it the other way. Perhaps he needs to tell Beni the same thing.

Beni is a little smaller guy than Bogey, but we have seen some power from him but it has gone away the second half.

Right - while it is good to deal with tough pitches by going the other way ... the better way is laying off the pitches and forcing them to give you something to drive.

He pulled his 3 rbi double down the right field line. More balanced hitting for him adds to his value.
