In this thread I thought it might be fun to track a fictional team composed of all ex-Red-Sox players and see how they do in comparison to the ones who stayed. First I'll need help filling out the roster; you can find the list of eligible players here: http://www.soxprospects.com/exprospects.htm, although it lists players who currently don't have a job like Ryan Hanigan. I'll start:

C

1B Anthony Rizzo or Adrian Gonzalez, hmm

2B Jed Lowrie

SS Jose Iglesias

3B Travis Shaw

LF Yoenis Cespedes

RF Josh Reddick

CF Jacoby Ellsbury

DH Victor Martinez

SP1 Jon Lester

SP2 Rich Hill

SP3 Anibel Sanchez

SP4 Wade Miley

SP5

Closer Andrew Miller

Back in the days of David Ortiz and Alex Rodriguez, the Seattle Mariners would rank high on a ranking of all-former-players teams.

Alas, today we're stuck with:

C Chris Iannetta/Welington Castillo

1B Logan Morrison/Kendrys Morales

2B Asdrubal Cabrera/Luis Valbuena

SS Ketel Marte/Brad Miller

3B Adrian Beltre/Danny Valencia

OF Adam Jones/Eric Thames

OF Chris Taylor/Austin Jackson

OF Jarrod Dyson/Mark Trumbo

DH Justin Smoak/Yonder Alonso

SP Taijuan Walker

SP J.A. Happ

SP Doug Fister

SP Chris Tillman

SP Wade Miley

SP R.A. Dickey/Jason Vargas/Nate Karns/Yovani Gallardo

CL Brandon Morrow

RP Fernando Rodney

RP Steve Cishek

RP Carson Smith

RP Brandon Maurer

RP Tyler Olson

LR Mike Montgomery

LR Ryan Yarbrough

Still currently playing, and yes ANY player who either was drafted by Boston or played for Boston. I want to compare the stats of the current Sox against those of the ex-Sox, so we can assess the decision to pass on those players. For instance, I really want to compare how Rafael Devers is doing to Travis Shaw, Xander Bogaerts to Jose Iglesias, Mookie Betts to Josh Reddick, Dustin Pedroia to Jed Lowrie, etc.

That's pretty thin gruel, to be perfectly honest. Lester was a big loss, and I think Lackey (after tommy john) was too.

Rizzo for Gonzalez was a gamble, but Rizzo wasn't even in mlb yet.

Cespedes could be thrown on this team also.

I completely forgot about him! I'll put him over Manual Margot in left field. Thanks!

I still need relief pitchers. I don't think any of the ones suggested so far are still playing. And looks like we don't have a catcher at all.

Tazawa is on Marlins. I think Melancon is still on Giants. Noe Ramirez is on Angels. Blaine Boyer is on Royals I believe.

Edit: Matt Albers is doing a solid a job on Brewers. Forgot him.

Boyer is off to a wee bit of a rough start - 14 earned runs in 5 innings of work.

Yeah, he isn't very good, I just remembered facing him in MLB the Show on the Royals, and remembered him on Sox last year. I was having trouble remembering many bullpen arms.

Then, put Margot over Ellsbury in CF.

Yes! My fictional budget can’t afford Ellsbury’s salary.

Ellsbury has become the new American Idle.

Watching the Ellsbury mess unfold with a new injury every week lessens the sting of the panda boondoggle.
