HAHA, 2 separate replies to the same post!

Im serious! He is going to go on the phantom DL for 162 games at 20+ Million??

.....and, I love the kid...but if he is given the opportunity to play at 3B everyday, he will make 20 errors. He made 14 in 56 games this year. We can make a PM private wager if you like. :o

20 errors would be very acceptable.

I would never make a private wager with someone who disappears from the board for years at a time.

I sense a lot of negativity in your posts towards me. If you prefer I left, I would.

I'm just f***ing with you my man. Figured you were up for it.

If kiddie camp is too hard on you... :cool:

In this case, he really has to agree to go on the DL. He can’t be DL’d without an injury and if the sox phantom DL him, he’ll be less than pleased. If he thinks he’s healthy and the sox try to DL him to keep his option from vesting, he’ll raise hell. If the sox sign JD and platoon Hanley and Moreland, that’s at least sensical and allows for good defense when Moreland is in there and a good bat vs lefties when Hanley plays. It also allows the sox to avoid the option without any blame

Well, I knew youd say the right thing. And you know it is, in comparison anyway. Maybe for the better though......seabeach and all those guys were brutal.

Hanley can't play 1B, and doesn't want to play 1B. Every time they ask him to, he misses the next 2 games....its not really worth the platoon if hes unavailable to face lefties because he was asked to play 1B, and this also means that Mooreland will be getting 60%, or more of the ABs.

I was responding to Original Post that said Hanley's contract was a sunken cost. I replied only 2018 was.

Actually, 2016 was worse than 2018 for HRam.

That’s fine. If he’s a RH portion of a platoon, you don’t need him for the next 2 games. And if it hurts him, it potentially allows you to deploy him without restriction later in the year

HRam and his agent will hit the roof, if they try to pull a "phantom DL" on him.

He will not be DFA's either.

He has value, even if we trade him and pay $15M of his $22M contract. That $7M can buy a RP'er.

Apparently, the surgery went well, and he's supposed to be able to play 1B next year. We should know more by ST'ing, but my guess is, HRam is the FT DH on opening day. If we sign JD, we will trade JBJ or create some kind of modified platoon like this....

Moreland plays 1B vs all RHPs. He rides the bench when a lefty starts.

HRam plays 1B vs all LHPs. He DHs vs some RHPs and ends up with just under the PAs needed to vest.

JD plays DH vs most RHPs and LF vs some RHPs and all LHPs.

Beni plays CF when JD is in LF. Benis sist vs half the LHPs.

JBJ sits vs half the LHPs and some RHPs.

Betts gets rested vs RHPs only.

It's not ideal having JBJ on the bench so much, but if any one of our OF'ers or 1B/DH get hurt, he's back to FT.

IMO, we'll trade him for a SP'er.

There's always been turds in the punch bowl. With how much the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse posted, it was more turd than punch at times. The really useless posters on here now tend to only post a couple times a day so they are easier to ignore. We tend to all get along pretty well and there hasn't been a real flame war on here in a long time.

By what metric does Hanley have value? I can't see any other team wanting to cover more than $2M of his salary.

@EvanDrellich

There have been rumblings that the Red Sox want to trade Hanley Ramirez, would eat some 2018 money, but can’t find a suitor. That plate appearance clause that kicks in for 2019 makes it very tough.

@jay_jaffe

For 2018 Hanley Ramirez, you can have the contents of my daughter’s diaper pail AND 3 cans of [brand redacted] pale ale that I gave up on in Fall 2016 but can’t bring myself to pour out. LMK if that works.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2017/10/18/would-red-sox-better-off-without-hanley-ramirez/Y4qb9BbJXGdfUMzN9AHeoM/story.html

In the eyes of multiple members of the industry, he’s virtually untradeable given (a) the performance questions; (B) a surplus of inexpensive free agent first basemen/DHs; © his $22 million salary; and (d) a $22 million vesting option for 2019 that would become guaranteed with 497 plate appearances.

In an offseason when the Sox may need to pursue a top-of-the-market power hitter such as Martinez, it ordinarily would seem ridiculous to wonder whether it makes sense to release Ramirez and thus create a need for a second bat — particularly given that the Sox would thus pay Ramirez $22 million to play elsewhere, while also having to spend on a free agent. (Example: Without Ramirez, the Sox might be left to pursue Martinez while trying to bring back a player like Mitch Moreland on something close to the $5.5 million he received last year.)

Yet releasing Ramirez might permit the Sox to add a player who would be a more reliable roster fit in 2018 while ensuring that they wouldn’t be on the hook for his $22 million vesting option in 2019.

And finally:

@pgammo

The Moreland signing guarantees Hanley Ramirez won't get ABs for 2019, makes it easier to trade or release him and clear deck for Martinez, w/Arizona financially viable. Scott Boras still doesn't rule out Hosmer, for Fenway LCF power potential. 'Backs hired JD's H mentor

Whatever happened to Gammons? This guy is just terrible now.

Glad I finally got to see that by the Sox releasing Hanley, they are not obligated for his 19 salary. Sox have to think about this.

Hanley is too good to just release at the moment. I would just "platoon" or relegate him to the bench in case of injury and MAKE SURE he doesn't get thoose AB's he needs. Wish Panda had that clause in his contract too...

This still begs the question though, where does Hanley and his 20+ million dollar contract play? You mentioned Martinez and his awful glove, but he is no match to Hanley. Hanley cant play 1B, and doesnt want to play 1B and he was a disaster in LF. Are we really going to add another player who is a liability in the field? Combine that with the 20 errors that Devers will make this year.........The Mooreland signing could potentially screw us now that JD Martinez sees that there is a logjam. He may decide its not worth the headache.

I think the fact that they havent moved anyone to make room, and instead congested the situation even worse really hurts us.

I don't expect the Sox to clear up the logjam until they actually have the logjam. If they sign Martinez, then maybe they start exploring trading Bradley again.

I know a lot of fans think this hurts Bradley's trade value, but it really doesn't. If other teams want him, they'll make their best offers they are willing to make. If multiple teams are interested, which is likely, then teams do have to outbid each other. Bradley's value is based on his performance, salary, years of control, and how badly or not other teams want him. Not on the Sox depth chart...

So basically we’re fielding the same offense and expecting a different result. How is this not insane?

wait...did we win the AL East?

Price can opt out after 18 I believe? !

your f***ing high as a kite if you think Price is going to opt out of that contract. he literally chuckles to himself every friday when he gets his paycheck....

The problem is that there are only so many bodies you can keep on a roster. It doesn't make much sense to keep Hanley on the team as a bench bat.

The only way he opts out is if he wins the CY this year.

He has a chronic elbow issue, he is not going to do better than $30 million/year for 2019-2022. And I don't think he will be able to do better than that even if wins the Cy Young,. On the other hand, it baffles me why so many people would want to lose a Cy Young caliber pitcher. How do you replace that? And at what cost?

Posted
The only way he opts out is if he has a Cy Young caliber season, and then you're down Pomeranz, Price and Kimbrel at season's end. Yes, it would give you financial flexibility, but it would also weaken your team

oh boy. proof please?

there is absolutely zero truth to your post. the narrative that hanram complains or throws tantrums is 100% false. the man has done everything...EVERYTHING...the Red Sox have asked him to do. without complaining once.

this season he can go 27-1 with a 1.24 ERA and he will never opt out of that contract.

I think he thinks more of himself than we do.
