Who cares: just hit .850 with 28-30 HRs for about $6M/ 1 year.

I care. Many guys would hit more HRs if they would swings from their heels on every AB. I prefer a Nunez type who hits for average and still can give you HRs as well. Thats why we let Napoli go, too many strikeouts with occasional power.

Duda vs RHPs since 2014....

ISO

.260 (9th in MLB)

(JD Martinez is 19th at .259/Bryce Harper is 8th at .261.)

OPS (800+ PAs)

.861 (27th out of 271 players)

22nd out of all players with 1400+ PAs

Duda has averages 32 HRs per 650 PAs vs RHPs since 2014.

I'd like to see us get Duda to compliment HRam at 1B and cover for any injury to HRam or Martinez.

I thought you teach ESL classes?

And when he signs I'll finally be able to say it...'Oh Duda Day!'

You might be able to say it, but we'd appreciate it if you didn't. ..

Exactly. It's like adding $12-15M to Santana's contract (for 1-2 years anyways).

We can sign Santana and not JB and just DH HRam FT.

Allowing HanRam to DH is kinda pointless. Why have a DH who cannot hit? I don't expect much of an improvement from him this year, and he wasn't very good last year. He is a wart upon his team.

The offseason is a time for optimism.

Accordingly:

1) Hanley's poor numbers last year were a result of his shoulder issues.

2) Shoulder issues are now 100% fixed.

3) Hanley will be much better next year.

4) Check back with me in May to see if I still feel this way.

The only time high Ks bother me, is if the guy's OBP is low. Duda still gets on base enough, when he doesn't HR.

He was over .349 from 2013-2015, and his .322 OBP this year was not that bad.

His .496 SLG% this year would have led the Sox by 37 points!

At such a low cost, to me, it's worth it.

HRam has rollercoastered his whjole career, and most of his dips have been injury-related.

Of course, he could easily get injured this year, but if he's healthy, I think he'll be much closer to 2016 than 2017.

The "s" and "d" are next to each other on the keyboard.

Sorry.

I was kidding you about the the use of the word compliment instead of complement. I guess this slow season just gives me too much time and brings out the kidder in me.

I do as well although who knows with his personality. From what I hear, he is a really hard worker but it would be difficult to know that from his demeanor. I think the best bet is to avoid his return in 2019 and go with a safer prospect. Some great ones will come on the market then.

I keep telling myself that the post-surgery Hanley may be as good as the 2016 version, and it might be. However, the 'rub' comes in the fact that we won't know until ST has started and by that time all the guys we'd want to sign will be signed someplace else and we'll be stuck with another Mich Moreland. I have no problem with Moreland, he's just not what we need.

The only thing Hosmer has going for him is that he's dating NESNs Kacie McDonnall.

Yes, this would be a great reason to sign Hosmer.

He may not rebound like some of us hope he can, but he was playing injured last year. It's quite possible that he can be a solid offensive player for us. I am hopeful.

One reason I like the idea of signing Duda to "compliment" HRam at 1B and DH.

He looks to be one of the cheapest sluggers on the market this year.

Picture it like this. Men on first and third with one out and Duda at the plate. For every one home run, he will have 19 strike outs. Are you willing to take the good along with the bad?

Sounds like Duda is about to tell hanley what a wonderful player he is.

I can't think of one situation in my life where I wasn't or wouldn't be willing to take the good along with the bad. Sure beats the hell out of just taking the bad...

In his career with men on first and third, Duda has hit 375/458/736 for a crazy 1194 OPS.

Perhaps more significantly, with RISP he has hit 231/375/433 for a respectable 808 OPS.

One good thing about a guy who strikes out a lot is that they don't hit into a lot of DP's. They're too busy striking out. Take these for example:

GIDP's per 100 AB's in 2017: (>400 AB's)

H. Ramierez.....3.0

Bogaerts.........3.0

Benintendi.......2.8

Betts...............2.8

Pedroia............2.4

Vazquez...........2.2

JBJ..................1.76

Duda...............1.75

In that scenario there are worse things than a K.

Even the much maligned Mike Napoli who was drawn and quartered here for his K's grounded into a DP 2.6 % of the time.

In 2013 Napoli had an ungodly 187 K's in 578 PA's. But he had a 360 OBP and a 482 SLG. Bottom line he had a solid season in spite of the K's. Some guys can do this.

In terms of making outs, a strike out is no worse than any other kind of out made over the long run, even in that situation. As long as his OBP is decent, it doesn't matter if he strikes out a lot. Many sluggers fit that description.

I did not have a problem with Napoli's Ks because he got on base at a decent clip.

Adam Dunn is another one who comes to mind.

I much prefer a guy who puts the ball in play over a strikeout. In one case he has a chance of gaining some offense advantage, in the other he provides nothing. One of us could stand up there and strike out most of the time. I would stay away from guys who have a high strikeout rate. As I mentioned before, I would prefer a guy like Nunez, who is always a threat at the plate and has some power to a big power hitter who only makes contact once in a blue moon.

I hear you, but at the same time in today's game many of the power hitters strike out a lot... and I think most of us agree that this team needs a power hitter or three. Having a high K rate may be the price one has to pay for having a hitter who finds the seats 30+ times a year.
