From @CraigMish on @TMASTL re: #STLCards and #Stanton: I have been told the #SFGiants are willing to take on the entire contract, and that makes the Giants the favorites right now with the Cardinals in second place. I think the Giants are all-in until the end to get Stanton.

@tmckernan

From @CraigMish: I think the #STLCards have the most have to offer. It's my belief that the #SFGiants are all-in on this, so that makes the Giants the favorite. So, I'd rank it: 1. Giants 2. Cardinals 3. #Dodgers 4. #RedSox

I'm trying my best!

A lot of it will wind up being hogwash, but at least it gives us something to talk about when nothing is going on.

I think he says no to STL.

It's not that I care how much they spend. I know the money isn't unlimited and therefore don't want it spent foolishly or on short term fixes that require long term commitments.

My sentiments exactly.

He's been told he will have to waive his no-trade or else:

However, does it make sense for the Sox to go after him if he really doesn't want to be here? Expensive is one thing, expensive and disgruntled is another.

I certainly do not want a player that doesn't want to be here.

I don't get these repeated digs at posters who talk about the payroll....while I think all of us would be happy with the Red Sox spending $400 million per year, the fact is that there is a finite amount the club is willing/able to spend each season whether we like it or not, meaning $20 million blown on a Pablo Sandoval equals less of the pie left to allocate to other needs. People talk about the budget and the luxury tax because they acknowledge this reality, not because they want the Red Sox to be cheap or they're concerned about saving John Henry money.

Well said. If I felt comfortable that taking on large contracts would not prohibit us from any future signings, then I'd have no problem with large contracts. But the reality is that if we have a contract like Price's and trade for Stanton and take on that contract as well, that will limit our financial flexibility. Also, Henry is not going to spend enough over the tax limit to enter the 'steep' penalty area. I am confident of that.

The Red Sox are among the organizations “in active talks” with the White Sox regarding veteran slugger Jose Abreu, according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag (via Twitter). It is not clear at the moment which other teams might be involved or how far talks might have progressed.

MLBTR’s Mark Polishuk recently examined the potential market for Abreu, citing Boston as one of the major possible suitors. Of course, there are also quite a few other organizations that would likely see merit in his contract rights.

Trade for Abreu. Sign JD. Two more rings AT LEAST.

I don't think we have the pieces to trade for Abreu, unless we're talking major league talent. One of the writers, I believe it was Cameron, made a very good point about gaining offense at the expense of our defense if we trade JBJ and move Beni to CF. It becomes almost a lateral move at a higher cost.

I'd hate to see JBJ go. He's one of my favorite players.

Abreu is a good hitter with power and a plus defender. If the plan was to sign JDMartinez and move him to 1B, then the Abreu gain on defense at 1B would offset part of the loss of JBJ's defense in CF.

I think it would take some of our best prospects to get Abreu. I'd rather just pay the penalty for signing QO free agent Santana.

Here are some Sox players with 4+ years of team control:

ERod 4

Barnes 4

Hembree 4 (out of options)

Marrero 5 (out of options)

Swihart 5 (out of options)

Hernandez 5

Beni 5

Scott 5

Taylor 5

If the CWS wanted some of the 3 guys out of options, plus a prospect or two, I might be okay with a trade, but signing Santana or JD makes more sense to me.

I would love to have Abreu on our team, no doubt. I just don't think we can do it without creating another hole.

I'd hate to see JBJ go too. He's the player I've always pulled the hardest for.

The hole would be in the farm, once again. I don't see the CWS wanting ML players, unless they have 4+ years of team control.

From this evening's MLB Trade Rumors chat with Jason Martinez:

Wendell

The white sox should NOT trade Jose Abreu. Right?

Jason Martinez

5:22

The White Sox should be open to trading Abreu, but they have the leverage. They should set the price high for a legit middle-of-the-order bat who is under contract for 2 seasons.

The White Sox are at least two years away from doing anything. Bradley makes no sense.

Seems to me chavis and raudes should get this deal done,

Two years of Jose Abreu, who has posted 14.5 fWAR valued at $113.5 million over four seasons, should command a far greater return than Michael Chavis and Roneil Raudes.

Chavis, the 92nd-ranked prospect at MLB.com, has a profile similar to that of 86th-ranked prospect Tyler O'Neill, whose trade in July netted only left-hander Marco Gonzales, a former first-round draft pick returning from Tommy John surgery.

FanGraphs gives a future value of 40 to Chavis, a 22-year-old, 5-foot-10, 210-pound right-handed power hitter:

FanGraphs gives a future value of 40 to the nearly 26-year-old Gonzales, who was the 19th pick in the 2013 draft:

The inclusion of Raudes in a Chavis trade does little to move the needle.

That might not be enough, even if Abreu had one year of team control.

Raudes doesn't have much trade value.

I'm not so sure Chavis does either.

As part of the right package. Raudes is more valuable as a talking point on SP podcasts.

JBj (or preferably Beni) should only be traded for Giancarlo.

From Friday's FanGraphs chat with columnist Jeff Sullivan:

mthood

9:14

Who has more trade value: Giancarlo Stanton (and his entire contract with an opt-out) or two years of Jose Abreu with a projected 2018 salary of $17.9 million?

Jeff Sullivan

9:16

I know this is going to sound nuts but I'm pretty sure the answer is Abreu

As people have already said, inside and outside of the game, Stanton's remaining contract is essentially what he'd get right now as a free agent. So his surplus value beyond that is something like $0

9:17

Abreu doesn't have that much of his own surplus value but it's just a two-year commitment. Or, really, a one-year commitment with a second-year club option, if you want to think of it like that. Abreu could be traded for something without the White Sox adding money

The Panik/Beede/Shaw rumor is only so because the Marlins would be eating something like $50 million.

Why should we refuse all trade offers that include JBJ other than Stanton?

He is extremely streaky. He doesn't get on base. He doesn't run and hes a below average offensive player.

He is Darren Lewis with power. Lewis would have won a GG every year had he had the luxury of JBJ's unproductive AB's.

Hes not that good, and extremely overrated.
