We got Thornburg in return. His injury was unfortunate but not foreseeable.

It was foreseeable to the Fangraphs guy (Cameron), who said he wouldn't trade for Thornburg due to his injury history.

It's funny, I think Cameron has disagreed with just about every trade Dombrowski has made with the Red Sox.

What? The 2014 wrist injury that fully healed by 2015?

Thornburg battled an elbow injury in 2014. The Brewers placed Thornburg on the disabled list June 7, 2014 with a wrist flexor strain after he felt discomfort in his elbow for a little over a month. He then underwent a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injection and the Brewers shut him down for the rest of the season.

If you click the link, Thornburg had an injury to his UCL. Serious stuff.

If you click the link, Cameron liked Thornburg (more than I thought), but he was concerned about his injury history and calls Thornburg "high risk." I think Cameron might be OK with trading for Thornburg, but he isn't going to give up T.Shaw for him.

You're looking at the 2017 Shaw not the 2016 Shaw.

You ignore Shaw's history: 7 of his previous 12 half-seasons were sub par.

Its the general manager's job to get this stuff right. Dombrowski got it wrong. That matters.

He took a risk in acquiring Thornburg, and it blew up on him. He has taken a lot of risks since the Red Sox hired him. We'll see what happens.

I don't disagree. Theo got some big stuff wrong too, especially in 2011, but was a great GM in spite of that.

Yes, in hindsight the trade looks awful, and ultimately- right or wrong- GMs are judged in hindsight.

Yes, he has take several risks, especially with trading away so many prospects and signing Price to a 7 year deal.

I'm hopeful Thornburg can give us some plus next year.

I totally agree, and if you look at all the moves, signings and draft picks starting after the Nomar trade back in 2004, one could argue it looked like a net negative on paper (not win-loss records- just how his deals worked out). That was a long period of time.

I guess it all comes down to championships. Theo made some awful moves, but he delivered two championships and so he gets a pass in many ways. Dombrowski has to deliver a championship or his tenure will be viewed as a failure (mostly).

I get that, but also, a GM should leave the team in an equal or better position than when he came in, or it should or can be used against him..

Theo delivered a parade to both Boston & Chicago.

Greatest. GM. of. all. time.

It's pretty un-arguable when you put it that way.

A few ex-Sox prospects around the league were added to the 40-man rosters of their respective teams as well. Mauricio Dubon (Brewers), Luis Alexander Basabe (White Sox), and Gerson Bautista (Mets) were all protected ahead of the Rule 5 draft. Nick Longhi was considered likely to be added by the Cincinnati Reds before suffering an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery in August.

An injured pitcher? sounds like a perfect trade partner for Desperate Dave. wonder if the Reds will take Devers & Groome?

Longhi is not a pitcher.

Joel Wolfe says Red Sox told them at GM meetings the team was prioritizing pitching. Wolfe noted how crowded Red Sox outfield is. Asked if salary was concern for Sox, Wolfe said it was for everyone.

Trade for pitching, sign FA bats?

so. now that my Giancarlo dreams are crushed. Harper next offseason?

That would be great even if I don't care for the kid.

I don't believe he will get 400 mil but someone is going to pay him.

Get rid of the Fatboy and Hanley contracts first. Or at least the Fatboy contract.

Just curious why? Not that I disagree, I don't know.

Too expensive.

We'll be on the second year of paying the luxury tax.

We'll need to start locking up our own players.

Our OF is our biggest strength.

Not that i'd mind, if we signed him, and Henry decided to spend away.
