There's been talk about Machado getting a deal in the same range as Bryce Harper. But his OPS+ this year was an unimpressive 107.

Wouldn't be surprising to see him have a big walk year, though.

I'd be fine getting Santana not JD- maybe we can pay more per year and get him for just 3 years.

Getting Santana might allow us to go harder for better pitching.

Amen my brother! More pitching is the goal. We have very little depth and as of today having to hope a knuckleballer coming off surgery can step right in and produce from day one! Desperate dave must learn the value of depth!!!

The hitting will bounce back with our existing crew if the walking wounded ever heal up and stay relatively healthy next year. Another reason desperate dave needs to learn the concept of depth.

I know hindsight is 20/20 but putting your third base eggs in sandavol’s basket with Hernandez, holt and marrero as backups was beyond moronic.

Ps: Santana needs to be off our list as he received a qo from the Guardians.

It's funny how changing laundry can make a guy more palatable to the fanbase...

depends on the fan, i guess. my hate for canseco, price, and lackey didnt change when they donned the B....

The QO penalty is not as bad as some think it is.

At least JD has no QO, but then we are forced to play HRam at 1B FT (or trade JBJ).

I never really hated Price and certainly not Lackey before Boston. My hatred for Lackey came about after his first two seasons with the Sox...

You know, he did know Devers existed. In fact, Devers was the one elite prospect he didn't trade. The Sox had plenty of depth at third. How many guys were the Sox supposed to have there?

Plus, it's hard to know what Hernandez might have done at 3B had he not gotten hurt.

I think the biggest issue was waiting so long to trade for Nunez and call up Devers. I can understand the Devers decision as his defense was deemed "not ML ready", and he basically showed that after he was called up.

The key is always knowing which prospects to keep and which to deal. It seems he made the right call by keeping Devers in favor of Moncada.

yup. add him to the list too.

(although i actually dont hate him as a color guy)....

Carl Crawford. I hate all Devil Rays from that time period. He never felt like a Red Sox player. It never seemed real to me.

I would argue that between sandavol, Hernandez, holt and marrero we had a lot of bodies, and a whole lot of hope and pray and what if’s as far a actual players go.

I'm not sure they seriously considered Marrero. I think they hoped they could catch lightning in a bottle with Sandoval coming back in shape and moving him at the deadline. At that point, they could have traded for a 3b or brought up Devers.

I think they viewed Hernandez as a legitimate contender with Holt as a possible carry-over until a deadline deal could be made.

I do not think that at this time last year, they saw Devers as anything but a possible September call-up.

My question is this, if Marco does very well this year, will that vindicate DD in the eyes of those who feel not adding to the 3B position (or not trading Shaw) was a huge mistake last winter?

What a freaking disaster, we ended up with Devers there and we won the division.

I think it was clear Dombrowski did not want to block Devers - and any 3B solution had to be a short term one. Of course they all stunk - and the trade market stunk, and Devers had that magnificent season the farm, so there you go.

Dombrowski definitely looked at the farm and quickly said Devers and Benintendi were the guys to keep and have treated them as such.

True. Very true.

I do think that Devers was not in DD's 2017 3B plans, except for maybe as a September call-up candidate.

If Marco does well, it vindicates me that Pedroia should have been traded by now.

Sandoval + Hernandez + Holt + Marrerro = 4 Hail Mary's

Devers = 1 Hallelujah

Some could say he was desperate to hold onto them.

So dombrowski’s grand plan was to rely on two prospects that he rushed through the minor leagues?

Isn’t that the definition of desperation!!!!

Is desperate dave’s Plan to have a collection of 25 good players or is his plan to build an organization with chemistry and depth!
