DD isn’t an “outside the box” thinker. He’s not a guy who regularly deals big league talent for big league talent. He’s a guy who either deals kids for proven vets or when he rebuilds, the other way around. His only two outside the box deals involved getting Scherzer (huge win) by dealing Granderson and getting Greene in the Didi deal by dealing Robbie Ray (big loss).

Who said DD was "outside the box" thinker? I like his approach. Where do we need help? We need a power bat? Who is out there? Do what's necessary to make the trade happen. He's pretty straight-forward in my opinion.

Miami won't give Stanton for anything less than Devers and Benentendi.

i would try to do it with Beni and whomever they want from non MLB roster.

Posted
Either that or try to limit his pitches more.

The guy has terrible September numbers and declines steadily after May over his career, yet JF let him lead the league in IP.

i have faith our new manager will handle this situation much much better. a monkey would.

I don't think it will be that easy. You still have to win games, and Sale was one of their best weapons in doing that.

Cant give Benni and Devers for Stanton. Bad philosophy. Ceiling too high on these 2. Look at the kids that show that they are in- consistent. More proven that in long run they hit their peak. Especially in the Power and run producers.

Your trying to get Power and losing at same time. For 2 Players. Now you have to look elsewhere to fill the void. Devers and Benni can easily hit 50 HRS together, Stanton hits 50 its a wash, and a lot of money, now your short a 3rd baseman.

Start FA, only cost money then work the phones.

My prediction next year Devers will be an All-Star. These HRS Devers hits are not chip shots hitting the Pesky pole, They are blasts, and he is only 20 years old. Last kid I want to get rid of. Patience with his Defense, he'll get better.

He is made for Fenway too, not just hitting the wall, he smashes them over it, most of the time to Left-Center, that's a shot for a LHB.

Devers would be my #1 untouchable. He'll play for league minimum for 3 more years. He also has power potential. No way in hell he's included in any package.

Devers is a massive massive talent ... 20 YOs who made the rise he did are tremendous bets going forward. That said, betting him to make the All-Star team before he can drink is still unlikely.

Devers, ABSOLUTELY NO. Beni, a maybe if Stanton or Votto.

I agree on Devers. His defense showed signs of hope. He just needs to learn and practice so I hope he commits to doing so. He could really become a big power hitter on this team.

I wouldn't worry about Devers and Benintendi, they're not going anywhere and FO has specifically prohibits DD in dealing them in any situation. With Betts back healthy next year, those 3 are the backbone of that lineup. You add JD Martinez and Carlos Santana/Nunez, it becomes a really good offense team again. But we also can't ignore the pitching too. They were on fumes by September.

if we use starting in June of this season as the time we want to start reigning him in:

June 10: could have saved 1 inning (10 pitches) 11-3 win

June 20: saved 2.1 innings (35 pitches) 8-3 win

July 1: saved 1 inning (12 pitches) 7-1 win

July 26: saved 1 inning (14 pitches) 4-0 win

Aug 8: saved 1 inning (11 pitches) 2-0 win

Aug 19: saved 1 inning (22 pitches) 3-4 loss

Aug 29: saved 1+ inning (17 pitches) 3-0 win

Sep 9: saved 1 inning (22 pitches) 9-0 win

Sep 20: saved 3 innings (41 pitches) 9-0 win

that's 12.1 innings right there without even skipping a start.

that's 184 pitches. 184. those bullets would have been nice to have in October. 184.

You guys think JBJ is worth more to this team than Benni? I just don't see this. Way, way too much value on his Defense. Benni was always a Centerfielder. 1st full season in the Majors too. Benni too valuable, ceiling too high. I don't see JBJ hitting .300 and 25+ Hrs and 100 or close 100 RBI's. Benni is capable of doing this. Don't see it from JBJ.

The Defense you save wont equal run production. AND I like JBJ too. Give Benni a year in Center and see if this is mistake, if it is move Betts back to Center. Benni to right. Other wise 93 wins if were Lucky and Yanks will have 95+ wins.

Posted

Benintendi and Devers ain't goin nowhere. The aggressive promotion tells you what the org thinks about them. Betts almost certainly is not going anywhere. Bogaerts probably isn't. (it'd be selling low anyway - you probably need time away from the hand injury and performance to open his market up again) Bradley is my guess for the guy who IS getting moved if they can get a quality bat in the trade market.

They need another bat - the good news is that the corner outfield/1B market is a fairly good buyer's market. You see how Encarnacion was not able to get 3 years in the market. Guys like him (low athleticism, big bat) got squeezed last year and I would not be surprised if that happened again. There should be somebody gettable for a 1-2 year hitch who would help.

To be fair, you saw that from Bradley in 2016 mostly (the RBIs are who cares, function of chance)

Posted

I wanted to be fair to JBJ I like him, but he shows a bad trend, especially in the 2nd half of seasons, when it's crunch time. I checked his splits in years over 100 games. 2014, 16, and 17.

2014 started 111 games 2nd half .126 avg.

2016 started 155 games 2nd half .233 avg.

2017 started 131 games 2nd half .204 avg.

I don't understand I think he gets tired or they figure him out. Too me he's getting dangerously close to being a platoon player, or just a Defensive replacement.

Posted
Bradley is what he is. 2016 was the anomaly. He's going to be a 2-3WAR player who will hit a touch better than the average CFer and play lights out defense. You don't need to platoon him. But you also shouldn't be lulled into thinking he can be a middle of the order bat. He hits 8th or 9th in a good lineup and you live with the middling offensive production

On June 10th, the game was tied 3 to 3 in the top of the 7th with Sale still in the game. Sox scored 3 in the bottom of the 7th. Barnes came in to pitch the top of the 8th.

September is Sales swoon month. By the time you get there, it is too late. Sox were also still fighting to win the division at that time.

You are over simplifying it.

devildavid is right though, you have to look at the total situation, not just the final score of that game.

Good question on Martinez, I always look at the Arbitration numbers. He almost doubled it last year. Year before that doubled. I think after monster 2nd half, you start at 20 a year.

And I didn't even mention managing the bullpen. But I can't be sure if he is joking or not.

If the sox sign JD, what do you think his contract will be?

Moon has suggested 4/84 I believe. He says something EE who is 3/60.

I don't know. I's like to stay away from 4 years with that guy.

Diamondbacks are going to go hard after Martinez, they want him back. He's going to be more pricey than we might think.

They will be freeing up about $250 million in salary. They are not going to get Devers and Benitendi. Teams can get JD for less money and just a draft pick.
