For that to happen, we might have to trade JBJ (assuming we sign JD to play OF/DH) or Leon (so Swihart would be the lone back-up catcher.

I'd be fine with Marrero being the first guy to go and mybe Elias being the second off the 40 man roster, but we just won't have room for JD, Nunez, Brentz and Swihart without some DL activity or trades.

I think that you are right and for the record I'm not hearing many people really suggesting that if we sign Martinez then we need to keep Brentz. The story of Brentz and Barfield is a good story. If JD Martinez is not signed, I would hope that the Sox would find a way to both of these guys one way or another. I'm not suggesting that they both make the ml roster either. But when you need power throwing either one of these guys away just doesn't make much sense to me. Holt, Marrero, and maybe even Hernandez (who I think if healthy will make the roster) might be gone.

Rays Acquire C.J. Cron, Designate Corey Dickerson

By Mark Polishuk | February 17, 2018 at 7:50pm CDT

The Rays have acquired first baseman C.J. Cron from the Angels for a player to be named later, both teams annonuced. In a rather surprising corresponding move, Tampa also announced that outfielder Corey Dickerson has been designated for assignment to create roster space.

They designated Corey Dickerson for assignment? is there something wrong with him? That is shocking. Edited by a700hitter

Wow, what? Dude was literally coming off a 3 WAR season and was an all star, and they're just getting rid of him? What the hell? Stupid franchises stay stupid.

And they just traded Jake Odorizzi.

Rays are tanking ....how about Archer for an Autographed Papi photo ?

Sox fans don't want Archer. He'll cost at a minimum - Benintendi. Willing to make the deal?

The thing is, if they were willing to DFA him, they certainly offered him around in deals first and couldn't find any takers.

Since they were willing to DFA him and get nothing, they were probably not asking for much, if anything. Still, no takers.

And this guy was an All Star last year still making arbitration money. And he has no trade value.

But I keep hearing that Bryce Brentz, nearly six months older, does....

Other than a second half flop at the plate, what could be wrong with him that 29 other teams know about and won't give up an A ball journeyman for?

If you think he has health issues, no other team has examined him and HIPPA laws prevent any news about his health..

Maybe he has a problem that is such that Tampa couldn't in good faith offer him to other teams. It is strange just to DFA a guy in his prime years with his kind of talent, so I am lost as to why Tampa is just cutting ties. I am not buying that he has no trade value. The Rays just traded for a guy (CJ Cron) who is not as good as Dickerson.

You have to think something's wrong. You don't DFA 27 HRs and an .815 OPS unless there's more to the story.

What was his arb cost?

$5.95 million

Is it possible that they have a deal in place for him that hasn't been finalized? It is very strange.

Perhaps the Tampa Bay Rays will trade Corey Dickerson to the Red Sox for Brian Johnson and Bryce Brentz, potential Jake Odorizzi and Dickerson replacements who are out of options despite six years of team control apiece.

Dickerson could platoon with Hanley Ramirez at DH and/or rotate with Ramirez and Mitch Moreland at DH/first base.

Or not.:)

Then why DFA him mid-deal?

I think they found no takers but clearly didn't want to pay $6mill-ish for his second half sub-.700 OPS...

It probably won't happen, but something like that would actually make sense for both teams.

But I doubt the Sox make that deal until the JD Martinez saga comes to some sort of conclusion...

If he has some awful disease or condition, I would expect Dickerson himself to have a press conference or something. He certainly wouldn't have to, but that would be pretty unprecedented.

It is Tampa, so money is certainly a big part of the problem. ..

Numbers crunch on the roster? IDK.

Or the balance sheets?

If they had a roster number crunch, why trade for Cron? If they were upset with Dickerson's rough second half, Cron is no answer there either.

Cron is cheaper, so the reason Dickerson was let go had to be financial...

It is possible. In light of also trading Odorizzi, they could be cleaning house and going down the austerity road.

I don't know how much a career .829 OPS 28 year old guy is worth, but $5 million doesn't seem unreasonable.

If Dickerson is nota worth $5M, why is JD worth over $20M?

(BTW, you are right about why the Dickerson DFA shows how Brentz has to have no trade value.)

Dickerson being released makes no sense. Yes, a gigantic hole in his swing developed after the ASB, but for the first half, he was nails. He’ll be scooped up quickly

True. He's not clearing waivers. ..

think the Rays gave a real effort to trade him ? ....is it steroids ?is it something worse ? What If this is truly a tank job ? Is time to force the sale of that train wreck of a franchise .

I think they have a deal in place and just needed to open the 40 man roster slot. That being said, it is hard to see how a guy who can handle the COF defensively at an average level and can hit to his level would be DFA'd. Unless the trade is completed and the paperwork is pending, I wouldn't have done this. If the Rays are that hard up for cash, then that's sad. This isn't a guy making $20 mil via arbitration. They should be able to afford this
