8:27pm: USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets that, in addition to the five-year offer

from the Red Sox (which he pegs around $120MM), Martinez has discussed both long- and short-term scenarios to return to the Diamondbacks.

A shorter-term deal to return to the D-backs would come as something of a surprise, though it’d be somewhat similar to Yoenis Cespedes’ initial deal to return to the Mets. Unable to find the long-term pact he sought on the open market in the 2015-16 offseason, Cespedes instead returned to the Mets on a three-year, $75MM contract with an opt-out after the first season of the contract. He’d go on to sign a four-year, $110MM pact with the Mets the following offseason.

Nightengale reported earlier today that the only other formal offer that Martinez had received outside of Boston was a one-year pact to return to Arizona, though certainly that doesn’t mean that Martinez and Boras haven’t discussed other parameters with the Diamondbacks (or potentially with other clubs whose interest has yet to be firmly reported).

7:30pm: Boras, unsurprisingly, rejected the notion that Martinez is unhappy with any potential suitor, writes Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald. Rather, the agent tells Silverman that Martinez is “involved in multiple negotiations and is pleased with the participants and the good faith process,” calling suggestions to the contrary “not accurate.”

If JD thinks the Red Sox are being so inflexible, let him find a better offer from another team. When he finds one, he can bring it back to the Red Sox, and perhaps the Sox will become more flexible. Until then, there is no reason for the Red Sox to bend.

I want JD, but if he's not going to be happy signing here for "so little money", then I don't want him.

Yup.

We'll see if he is man of principals and strong conviction if he signs elsewhere for less money.

The sox have him by the balls right now. He's trying to elevate his market

That's how I see it.

I don't blame JD for trying to make his big pay day the biggest he can possibly get.

I'm thankful that DD is seemingly holding firm.

I don't think a pillow contract will work for JD. The Sox offer is likely the best. If he doesn't want it, then that's the way it is.

I'd like to say we are not looking to corner JD .The Redsox have been very forthcoming with how much they want the best bat on the market ...That's JD and the last thing Dave wants to do is insult this or any player we respect and covet .125 million over 5 is a fantastic offer to This great player .

JD - Arizona is a great place for you. Please take them up on a one year deal and then next offseason you can sit back and watch the super high dollar scrum to sign manny, Harper and Donaldson and then you can get a lesser deal than what we offered this year and cry about collusion all you want!

JD - we have no spot for you on our roster. Hello, you suck in the outfield. You are an injury prone dh only! Deal!

If this is representative of Red Sox fans, I can understand why J.D. Martinez would want to play elsewhere ... even for less money.

Harmony a lot of people are struggling to make ends meet and there fire at JD comes from a fan and an honest hatred for how much these Atheles make and cry about .I don't like the criticism myself but it's valid to that person. We are great fans period .

This would seem like a risky maneuver for Martinez, given that he's already 30 years old, just had the best season he's probably ever going to have, and would be facing a much deeper free agent class next winter... I'd be happy to offer him an opt-out if that would help sweeten the pot, but all this talk of a short-term deal feels like posturing until we see evidence to the contrary.

I don't know who I dislike more, JD Martinez for reasons that are pretty self-explanatory, or Dave Dombrowski for not moving on and finding someone else for the DH spot next year. Clearly, when Dombrowski develops a fixation for a player, he can't be moved off that player, and this would explain the overpay in some of his prior deals, especially the Sale trade.

I don't get the feeling that Martinez really wants to come here - who does? I think that he wants to stay in Arizona. he very well might take less to stay there. It really is his choice.

I really don't think that the local fan base is seen as much of a turnoff to anyone unless of course a player doesn't appreciate a full house every home game and fans that care deeply about their teams. I'm going out now to move a foot of snow. i don't blame him much for wanting to stay in Arizona.

Pretty much a spot on post, and Boras and Martinez know it.

There's a better than even chance that come next off-season the kind of money JDM is "demanding" will go only to the top players leaving him with the leavings. B/M are being coy, refusing to commit to anything yet, and risking watching what it appears is the best offer disappear.

We all make decisions in our lives. Some work out well, some don't. I'm all for Martinez doing what's in his best interest. I've been a proponent for some time of withdrawing the current offer and making another offer of daily declining money until JDM either takes the Sox offer or signs with someone else. "My" offer will force his hand into deciding whatever he thinks is in his best interest and doing it.

Unfortunately it looks like this has become a disagreement over principle, the only way it will resolved is if one party caves in, and neither party will cave. It's too bad but that's the way it is. Move on. Let him sign his one year deal with the D-bax this year and then sign for less than $25M next year.

Speaking for myself, I could eat a lot of crow for $125M.

From Natick can relate and it's always my home moved to NC 18 years ago because of the snow ....I miss Natick now I miss the passion up there the no mercy .I think you are insane to want to play baseball in a diamondback uni over a Redsox uni no matter where you are in life ...If he wants Arizona over Boston lol we dodged a huge grenade .We are the greatest fans on this here planet that is the greatest place to play ball on this planet .

Certainly feels that way. There's zero choice he takes a 1 year contract somewhere else, though. Unless him and Boras collectively lose their minds.

Perhaps some players would prefer to play on a team that won as many games as the Red Sox last year, for a franchise with one World Series title in its short 20-year existence, in a modern facility, before forgiving fans, in a virtually snowless location that hosts Spring Training.

Or not.

I think it means that DD doesn't think the other options (LoMo, Duda, etc.) are much better than Hanley.

Why does snow have anything to do with it? Most players only live here April - September. Not much snow then.

Do these same people take to the streets when Marky Mark is paid millions of dollars to be in a movie nobody will watch? At least baseball players can entertain you almost every day for 6 months.

I'm not sure any of us on here are representative of a normal Red Sox fan. We are all the crazies.

Speak for yourself, but I plead guilty to being a crazy Red Sox fan.

We offered JD a fair contract. If he chooses to go elsewhere, I'm fine, as long as option B is still on the board and obtainable.

I don't feel any anger towards JD for wanting more.

I actually think he's lucky to be a FA this year rather than next, but maybe that's just me. He's the cream of this year's crop. He won't be next year. He'll be a year older. He most likely will not repeat 2017 numbers in 2018. He's not likely to do any better after a "pillow contract" with AZ.

My guess is, he will take the Boston offer once he knows nobody will come close to it, which makes me wonder why we keep bidding against ourselves so often. $104-108M/4 might have blown away the next best offer.

Why take a one year deal to become a FA during next offseason? It makes no sense. If JD doesn't play a full year, his market value goes crashing down because everyone will see that he's a part time player. If he plays well, he'll still be up against transcendent players like Harper and Machado who can mash AND play the field. He should take the money now IMO.

I can't imagine Boras recommending a 1 year deal.

I don't see any other team out there offering 4+ years at $25M+.

I still think he ends up here.

Yeah, Boras wants to get paid too.

The only thing Martinez appreciates is a full bank account.
