Except for the Abreu part, I very much agree with this post. I'm not opposed to getting Abreu if the price is right, but it doesn't sound like it will be. The same goes with JD Martinez.

I think the Sox sign Santana, possibly next week.

I think they will still revisit signing JD Martinez in late January when Boras is still trying to wring that last drop of blood from any GM he can...

Sounds about right.

Not a terrible idea.

Sign JD to DH

Tell Hanley he's the everyday 1B

use the money on a 1B to bring in another SP so we dont have to depend on Steven Wright as out 5th starter

I'm just not a fan of Hosmer or Santana and I like our outfield the way it is now and I think it would cost too much to trade from that core to the White Sox for Abreu.

I like the idea of Brentz as the 4th OF he will add some pop I'm not sure about his defensive metrics what they are

Cobb, Arrieta or Darvish? After Darvish's postseason, I can't imagine Red Sox Nation liking that signing.

Signing Santana sooner rather than later sounds reasonable.

Dombrowski has a reputation for acting quickly. In doing so, he usually gets his guy, but he also usually overpays. Perhaps if he waits out the market for JD, the price will come down. That's my hope anyway. Would it be possible to sign JD for 4 years?

We do have a great need at 2B, at least until June, but I'm looking at us ending up dangerously close to the second penalty phase luxury tax limit (we need an acronym for this term)

Luxury Tax 2: Electric Boogaloo.

It is crazy quiet in the free agent market. Not even a good rumor! Like I said before, I think Boras is just about to make a speech on 'What the hell is going on here?'

Stanton is holding everything up. The FAs are waiting for the loser out of SF and STL to join in on the bidding for someone else (JD? Abreu?)

Anyone bidding or pining for Giancarlo is also in on JD and to a lesser extent, Santana. The other guys are low enough on the totem pole to wait out the losers of the big boppers sweepstakes. In terms of the pitchers, they're waiting on Ohtani. Once he signs, that might leave one less suitor for a top of the rotation arm and hence increase demand for a guy like Arrietta. The big FAs are playing their cards right. Sit back, wait for something outside their control (trade for GS and post/sign for Ohtani) to happen before kicking their negotiations into high gear.

What about pitchers though? There's been nothing about Darvish or Arrieta or Cobb or Shaw either.

I think something's going on more than just waiting for Stanton. Could be wrong of course. Maybe the floodgates are about to open.

Ohtani has until December 22 to decide. That's still 17 days away. Plus, he's not a big financial investment for whichever team scores him.

Stats say Adams mashes right handed pitching and Travis singles to death left handed pitching.

Sounds like a very good platoon situation!

I'm not sure the Sox want to carry three 1B/DH types on the 25 man roster.

HRam

Adams

Travis

More likely, we play Adams or HRam at 1B and DH and use someone else to DH when one of them needs to sit or be platooned (Brentz? TBD?)

Can we get JD, Cobb and Shaw and remain under the second penalty limit?

Bryan Shaw? He'll probably get about $5M/year.

HanRam could be a great supersub for LF/SS/3B/1B!

MLBTR suggested $7M x 3.

I think we might have $38M or so to spend and stay below the second limit, so, if we sign JD and Shaw, we might not have enough for a quality SP'er and have a little left over for summer needs.

I'm pretty sure I read DD plans to use Hanley at 1B. Do we ever pay attention to what he says? I've not heard mgmt say anything about Devers to 1B. But we spend countless space talking about his impending cliff, oops, impending move to 1B.

Yes, I read that HRam is expected to be healthy enough to play 1B.

Since we need a DH, we could sign a 1Bman and use HRam at DH.

There has been no talk of using Devers at 1B next year by Sox management that I know of.

I'm good.

Why sign Santana to a multi-year contract when you can just bring back Moreland?

Santana's numbers are not that much better than Moreland's.

We were fortunate how Pom's season turned out last year. It didn't look good early. He turned out to be healthy and had his best season.

Maybe we can expect the same from Price in 2018. We should compete for a playoff spot with strong pitching from Sale, Pom and Price. Porcello certainly can't do much worse. Ultimately Price's health holds the key. Our pen should be fine as long as Kimbrel is healthy.

Maybe the cheapest and most effective route is to sign Nunez and come up with a patchwork of starters, platooners. This will keep our payroll flexible and allow us to make big moves at trade deadline.
