Mutt on EEI after your win last night had a good point. Who toes the bump for game 3 in the ALDS? Porcello has been an epic disappointment. Foster offers limited upside and seems to allow runs early. ERod might be the best guy, but his inconsistencies have been concerning as wel. Who do you choose?

It's E-Rod by a landslide right now.

That is insane to choose ERod.

But ERod is who I'd go with too.

Dark times. But we do have super bullpen help.

Mutt was talking about using Price as a piggy back with your #3 to get you guys to the 5th inning

I could be wrong, but I don't think you would have a schedule when Price comes in. ERod can get in cruise mode, and pulling him while he is cruising wouldn't be the best move.

Having Price ready to go for early inning trouble ifor every starter is how I'd manage that, assuming a win is still possible.

Agreed.

E-Rod seems to have a pattern of getting hurt and then being f***ed up for a month or so when he gets back, but outside of that he's been fairly reliable. Easy choice for #3 right now, IMO.

In 4 starts for Sept. E-Rod has a 1.78 era. Tonight is #5 hope he finishes strong.

In 5 starts for Sept. Porcello has a 5.93 era.

I will take his inconsistencies any day over Porcello's.... When Porcello has a bad game he absolutely destroys our chances. Guy can't go more than 5 innings lately without giving up 5 or 6 runs plus. E-Rod's last start he actually looked very very good. I can't see anyone getting the third spot over him. He is young and will have the playoff jitters but I feel much safer with him than a Porcello at this point.

By the way Tanaka for the Yanks in 4 starts in Sept. has a 6.46 era, I think he goes tonight. He's the Yanks Porcello. Instead of hitting Porcello's, you get a lot of Tanaka's in NY.

Edit: Tanaka goes Friday, Blue Jays should hit a lot of Tanaka's.

Montgomery has been good, are they watching his innings now?

They had been, but if we need a playoff 4, I think it's all hands on deck. He has been really, really good in September, and you don't shut a guy down who is rolling into the playoffs if you are a playoff team

Despite Tanaka's inconsistency, I don't see how he's not part of the rotation mix should we advance. I will be surprised if the rotation order is not Severino, Gray, Tanaka, CC (Sevy pitching WC game would mean Gray pitches game 1). I think Monty doesn't make the 25 since they will likely opt for Garcia as the long man out of the bullpen (Yanks always go with the veteran). And they'll probably use the vacant 5th SP spot for a pinch runner, my guess is Wade.

OP question is much too easy. Better for me is, who is your number 2?

The WAR and the whole season argue strongly for POM, but ERod has better stuff--by a good margin--and lately (last 4 starts, average 6 innings and 5 ER's given up) has shown better command of those pitches.

So, me, I want to see what those two do against the Astros this week. If ERod does great and Pom struggles again, ERod is my #2.

Some guys like to go with the hot bat. I like to go with the hot arm.

Plus, as some of you probably know, I am not a big Pomeranz fan even though I agree entirely he was a huge bonus for the rotation this year, especially when Price went on the DL (twice?) and Porcello was horrendous. If our rotation is decent, it's mostly because of Sale and Pom. But what worries me about Pom he is a starter with basically two pitches--knuckle curve and fast ball. He's a lefty who faces 75% or more righty bats and still does not have a viable changeup.

Yes. In that order. If we need a 4, it will be Porcello or Sale on short rest.

Game 1 is Oct 5 and game 4 is October 9, 4 days rest. If we are up 2-1 in games, I probably go with Porcello and use Sale in game 5, October 11, on 6 days rest. If we are down 1-2 in games, I probably go with Sale.

I go with Pom

AWAY ERA

3.19 Pom

3.99 ERod

Home

3.58 Pom

3.81 ERod

Pom had a rough outing and his velocity was down. He might have been sick or perhaps the long season is catching up with both he and Sale. JF should be in an excellent position to make the call and I'll look to his choice as the smartest one.

That is not 4 days rest, it’s 3

We just count differently. I assume a pitcher begins to rest his arm the instant the game is over. Assuming the next game is at the same time of day (7 pm and 7 pm), that's 20 hours of rest plus the three days in between.

Sale

Pomeranz

Fister

Oh, I like that. Totally wrong of course because Fister is out behind the wood shed getting beat up for failing to do his job. But I like Fister nonetheless.

As one sort of old time (fan since 1949), I like that a lot. I admit my prejudice against Pom and will be happy with whatever Farrell decides. My sense is Farrell with stay with the guys who got the Sox here.
