FWIW, I think they're both right. Porcillo's ERA is what it is and his record reflects the fact that the Sox are scoring more runs now,

But in his last 11 starts going back to mid-June he's had one outing where he pitched fewer than 6 innings and one outing where he gave up more than four runs. In August he's had three starts, going 6, 7, & 6 innings and giving up 2, 3, & 1 runs.

I'm certainly willing to grant that an 8-14 record and a 4.40 ERA isn't anything to write home about. The flip side of the coin is that he almost always gives us at least six innings and has pitched better for the past two months.

Exactimundo. Porcello is 3rd in the AL in innings pitched so he reduces the bullpen burden.

Girardi's response to questions about Judge setting the record for consecutive games with a K: "It's not like we have a lot of people hitting very well."

That might be the most beautiful thing I've ever read. If the most beautiful woman in the world showed up at my doorstep fully nude, I would say "Hey, babe, just wait one sec while I re-read this quote from the manager of the New York Yankees telling the media his team basically sucks."

Porcello started off the season somewhat poorly, but he has been much better as of late.

His first half ERA was 4.75. His second half ERA is 3.77. One of the reasons for the turnaround is the change in BABIP. His first half BABIP was .346 compared to a second half of .262. His K/W ratio remains very strong.

As you pointed out, he almost always gives us 6 innings, which is valuable in and of itself. To date this season, he has been worth $17.3 mil.

Maybe most importantly, he pitches well against the Yankees. :)

I am encouraged by what I see.

LOL Gotta love it.

The biggest X-Factor for Porcello over the course of his career has been the HR ball. Obviously, he was giving them away in the first half. Last season, and so far since the start of July, he's done a fantastic job of keeping the ball in the ballpark. The problem with a ground ball pitcher is that eventually, you're going to have to throw the ball up in the zone. At some point, you'll get burned, but from what I've seen, he's good at adjusting and just playing his own game.

lol this whole page is 700hitter calmly wrecking Thunder.

I like Thunder. I just think that he is overestimating Porcello's season thus far.

See, BstHcpr, what you don't understand, is that people on these boards are capable of having civilized disagreements. I might have been overestimating Porcello's season. I'm not a big stat guy, and since I haven't watched as many games as I would've liked to this season, I was just going off what I've seen of Porcello. Ted know that, and was providing the stats that I didn't have to back up my argument. He's not destroying me, he's giving me more information to allow me to come to the conclusion on my own, if indeed I was wrong about Porcello. There's nothing wrong with it. Maybe if you stopped blindly insulting me for no reason whatsoever (I still don't know what I ever did to you to deserve being the butt of 95% of your posts), you would understand that not everybody in this world is out to get somebody else. Maybe you're just jealous that an 18 year old kid can put out more quality posts than you, and earn the respect of adults that are supposed to be your peers, while you can't even contribute anything positive to this forum.

He has performed like a very solid #4. He is very useful, but he is a far cry from the ace he was last year. He is what he has been almost his entire career-- a #4.

I was never a big fan of Porcello and agree he was lousy earlier this season. But, frankly, who cares? What's important is how well he is pitching right now, and his right now is pretty good. I think ERod has better stuff, but can't control it and too easily falls back on his fastball. Fister is just OK. And Price is on the DL. So right now Porcello is our #3 in my opinion.

Interesting that both Sale and Porcello seem to want Leon as their catcher, so that could also be a factor in evaluating Porcello.

Way to go kid.

I think that you are pretty much right there. He has always been pretty much a middle of the rotation guy. most of us have hoped for a #2 kind of like Pomeranz is right now but he really has never looked like an ace to most of us. yes - even though he won the cy. i like him and am glad that we have him. he has always struck me as the kind of guy who will get the most out of what he has to give.

Someone once told me, "A starting pitcher is only as good as his last start."

While I am usually one to mock small sample sizes, there is a grain of truth to this statement- hyperbole and all.

Porcello is almost a full run better in the second half;

4.75 ERA 1st half (19 starts)

3.77 ERA second half (7 starts)

His OPS against has been below .730 in July & August after being above .860 the two prior months.

I'm not expecting 2016 numbers to end the season, but 3.77 would be nice.

If Bst is looking around for his lunch, Thunder just ate it.

I thought it was funny that he was wrong four consecutive times. Nothing more. I didn't even bother to read that novella on hypersensitivity. I don't got anything against Thunder.

Past 7: .262 BABIP 83% LOB 5.10 FIP GSc 53

Before: .346 BABIP 69% LOB 4.05 FIP GSc 49

2016: .269 BABIP 74% LOB 3.40 FIP GSc 61

I think he was a little unlucky in the first half, but he's not really pitching THAT much better now. I'm definitely not a fan of that FIP number. I hope this isn't him on a lucky streak.
