He doesn't need Ortiz's number if 5 of the other batters are producing at least 105 OPS+. What a horrendous start for this whole team.

I am going to have to agree to disagree with you on this one. I think, like a pitching rotation, you need that one guy. That guy who you can give the ball to (a bat in this situation) and know he is going to get the job done.

To put early season standings in perspective, they are only one game better than the Phillies.

True, and we are...

1 game better than the Dodgers

1.5 games better than the Rangers

2 games better than the Cards

3 games better than the Mets

3.5 games better than the Giants

Who was "that one guy" for the Cubs, Royals and Giants-- the last 3 years WS winners?

CHI: Bryant (.939)? Rizzo (.928)?

KCR: K Morales (.847)?

SFG: Posey (.854)?

Dodgers suck. (Can't win in the playoffs nowadays)

Rangers suck. (No WS wins ever)

Cards suck. (Team was going to be a .500 this year)

Mets suck. (No hitting and injured SPs)

Giants suck. (Bumgarner is too busy riding dirt bikes to play ball)

Exactly. All the good teams suck!

You cannot use Hanley to cover for David. Last year you had both and Hanley went 30/100. It's not like Hanley is going 45/130 this year. Moreland is a good enough player, but he isn't Ortiz. As a matter of fact, all your guys played well last year, even Leon. Who is going to pick up the slack? Xander had a career year, highest OPs and HR total in his career. Is he a 30Hr guy? Who knows? Expecting something beyond his career year is wishing. Is Mookie a 40HR guy? Who knows? But expecting him to improve on a MVP runner up season is wishing. Bradley had a career year. Pedroia had his best season since 2011 and is 33 years old with an injury history. I think management took a calculated risk replacing Papi with Moreland and going for pitching. Unfortunately for you, Price goes down and now the power goes out. Your lineup consists really of the 4 B's, Hanley and Pedroia. The other 3 spots were pretty questionable. Moreland is looking like a hit. The C spot and 3B look awful. If you have another guy have a rough season (I'm looking at you Hanley) then your offense will suffer immensely. Papi covered for a lot of ills on your team, and even at his best Mitchy 2 bags cannot come close to Papi's presence. You need Price back to see how the plan presents itself.

And btw, you guys are dealing with the bitch of high expectations. Your team is expected to win. David handled that very well. Over the past week, you have seen a weak spot in the armor of your current captain. Maybe there is a bit of a leadership void that needs filling?

I think they add steroids to the drinking fountain in the home clubhouse at Yankee Stadium.

It's just a theory I've had for years.

No proof.

Leon 37 OPS+

Pedroia 67

Bogarts 88

Sandoval 74

Young 71

Ramirez 61

Holt 29

Hernandez 77

The issue is beyond DH.

Papi would have "protected" all these guys and made them better!

I couldn't agree with your assessment any more. Very well written.

Papi helps the middle of the order, not guys hitting 7 - 9 (Leon, Sandoval, Holt, Hernandez).

You're right, the issue is beyond a designated hitter. To me, David Ortiz brought more than statistical numbers. He was the most clutch player to ever play the game and he brought his leadership. Right now, I don't think there's anyone on the team that could bring that value.

Win today and for the most part all is well. A loss hurts that much more when our 2 best pitchers are playing the game. It seems offensively we step up when we have to if the pitching is bad. But as soon as Porcello or Sale pitch we completely lay an egg. Yesterday should have been a win being that New York couldn't`t score many runs either. Such as life. I`ll be watching the Sens and Rangers game while listening to this game on my phone lol.

What ever became of that kid who came up and mashed last year for the Yankees? Sanchez or something?

Does he play?

Injured.

HanRam's early season power outage isn't anything new. Young had a slow start last year as well. Betts has had a slow start due to illness and has already shown signs of life, not worried about him. It's still very early and our pitching should only get better as the season goes on. I'm going to hold off too much of my own judgement until end of May.
