After a slow start and an injury, over his last 100 PA Sam Travis has hit .344/.398/.511 in AAA with 8 BB and 10 K. Average at best 1B.

Has he played any 3B?

Owens stinks. Until he cuts down the BB%, he should stay in AAA. The thinking with Johnson is that he probably needs to pitch every 5th day and have consistency since he missed time last few years. With the 2 rope a dopes Velazquez and Kendrick, you can jerk them around a bit and not worry about keeping them on a schedule.

@SPChrisHatfield

It looks like Brian Johnson is going to be the starter on Friday - would be on 5 days' rest.

Good a bet as others.

Not a bet I would wager.

Sam Travis on how he can help the Red Sox: 'I'd like to think I can hit.'

HOF

At least the Sox are making a move. I suppose he can be platooned and also offer some PH when not in the game.

Marco Hernandez To Undergo Shoulder Surgery

By Steve Adams | May 23, 2017 at 4:17pm CDT

Red Sox infielder Marco Hernandez will undergo surgery to repair his injured left shoulder on Friday and is likely to miss the remainder of the regular season, tweets Tim Britton of the Providence Journal. Hernandez has been on the disabled list due to a left shoulder subluxation since May 4.

The 24-year-old Hernandez hasn’t solidified himself as a regular big league contributor to this point in his career, but he’s been a useful utility option for the Sox since making his MLB debut last year. In 61 games and 116 plate appearances, Hernandez has batted .284/.328/.349, and he’s logged time at second base, shortstop and third base in the Majors.

[Related: Boston Red Sox depth chart]

Hernandez’s season-ending injury further thins out a depleted third base mix for the Sox. In addition to Hernandez, both Brock Holt and Pablo Sandoval are on the disabled list, leaving Deven Marrero and Josh Rutledge to split third base duties for the time being in Boston. Hernandez will now accrue a full year’s worth of Major League service in 2017, and the ability to move him to the 60-day disabled list will give Boston a bit of flexibility with the 40-man roster.

As for Boston’s third base alternatives, it doesn’t seem that the 28-year-old Holt is especially close to returning to action; Britton also tweeted that the versatile 28-year-old was removed from his rehab assignment due to the fact that he wouldn’t be ready for activation within the requisite 20-game window. He’s being shut down for another five days as he continues to deal with the aftereffects of a concussion. Sandoval, meanwhile, is on a rehab assignment in Triple-A but is out of the lineup today due to illness, per Britton.

That is unfortunate for him.

BOSTON -- The Red Sox called up No. 3 prospect Sam Travis from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday with the intention of him starting at first base against left-handers.

With a rested bullpen, Red Sox manager John Farrell said it was the right time to have the bench at full strength. To make room for Travis, the team optioned right-hander Hector Velazquez to Triple-A.

"He's been swinging well. There is some momentum with Sam," Farrell said. "The fact is, we are probably looking at four left-handed starters over these next four series, so we felt like it was an opportunity to add another right-handed bat...."

I wouldn't platoon him. it is another one of the overused concepts. Let's find out if he can hit!

If he plays FT, who sits?

HRam?

Moreland?

It really would i think depend on who is hitting. I'm not a big fan of either HR or Moreland. Since it appears that the only place for Ramirez appears to be the dh, he would not be playing everyday. The primary point that I was making is that even though platooning players based on the righty lefty concept is solid, i still think that it gets over used. i want to find out if this 23 year old can hit. I am ok with a manager actually deviating from the current gold standards.

so you are throwing in the towel on the 2017 season to see what our "kids" have?

excellent idea.

let's bring them all up. the only current 25 man that should be playing everyday is benintendi (he's young enough, right?). the rest can just sit and watch because we need to see if our kids can hit.

I want to find out what Travis can do as well, but I'm not sitting one of our best hitters this year (Moreland) or our best hope for a legitimate clean-up hitter going forward (HRam) at this point in the season.

I'm not sure I'd have called up Travis just to platoon, but that is what seems to fit best with him RIGHT NOW on the 25 man roster.

Throwing in the towel? really - not how I see it. Maybe you don't understand me so good. I think that Sam Travis might be better than what we are yarding out there daily. So let's see, you must not be in favor of playing any of these kids right? Let's leave all of these guys down on the farm to help our minor league franchises be successful. What do you think - trade a few more of them for some seasoned veterans?

ok I will temper my enthusiasm a bit but it is a move that I see as a little confusing. I won't change my thinking with respect to using him maybe what once every three or four days with some pinch hitting jobs thrown in will show. i'm sure that he is happy to be called up. my question really is why? If he has been called up to provide us with a better source of run producers then he needs the opportunity to prove himself. Playing sporadically probably will not do it. With all of that, just for the record, I'm really not a big Hanley fan and I think that Moreland ultimately gives us some depth.

so you want to sit 23rbi (near team leader) / 5hr (near team leader) / .809 ops / 0.9 WAR for a 22 year old? mmmm.kay. do i not understand good?

platoon with who? Moreland splits are pretty even.

this is a terrible move by FO. or as maybe it should be called - a panic move.

if they brought up devers that would have made more sense as there is actually a need at that position right now.

even his parents were shocked that Sammy boy was called up right now. if that doesn't scream "panic" i dont know what does.....
