I would replace Price with B.Johnson. It sounds like the Red Sox are gong with Fister.

I think the Red Sox could win a championship without Price but they would need guys like Rodriquez and Porcello to step up. In the playoffs, the Red Sox might need a Madison Bumgarner-like performance from Chris Sale, but Sale might have that in him. . . .

Doug Fister shouldn't be on the roster, he has literally been one of worst players in baseball.

Anderson Espinoza's debut has just been pushed back to 2022 possibly. Great trade by DD getting Pom for this kid.

[h=1]Padres’ Anderson Espinoza To Undergo Tommy John Surgery[/h]By Steve Adams | July 28, 2017 at 7:30pm CDT

7:30pm: The Padres have now announced that Espinoza will undergo Tommy John surgery.

7:20pm: Padres prospect Anderson Espinoza has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament and will undergo Tommy John surgery next week, reports Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune (via Twitter). The right-hander was acquired in a straight-up swap for left-hander Drew Pomeranz last summer — a trade that spawned its share of controversy after the Red Sox were reportedly unhappy with the state of Pomeranz’s health and a lack of medical information disclosure from the Padres.

The 19-year-old Espinoza was one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball at the time of the swap and entered the 2017 season ranked as a consensus top 25 prospect in baseball. Though he posted just a 4.49 ERA in a combined 108 1/3 innings of Class-A ball in 2016, Espinoza was also one of the youngest players in that league and managed an impressive 100-to-35 K/BB ratio in that time.

However, Espinoza hasn’t pitched at all in 2017 after experiencing forearm tightness back in early April (as Lin reported earlier this month). He progressed to a throwing program recently, according to Lin, but didn’t feel right after his most recent bullpen session, thus prompting further examination.

It’s a tough blow for the Padres’ farm system, as Espinoza now won’t throw a competitive inning at all in 2017 and figures to miss the majority of the 2018 campaign. Certainly, he’s young enough that there’s plenty of time for him to reach his potential as a front-line starter, but beyond the disappointment of pushing back his timeline to the Majors, the injury will also cost Espinoza two or more years of development time .

Could not agree more. Time to move him and abad to the dumpster of their choice. Maybe we can throw dave in as well.

Sad news regarding Espinoza, but he's young enough to come back from it, hopefully.

Disappointed that Fister is the pick to replace Price. The guy looks like he's toast, but Dombrowski seems to have a lingering crush from their Detroit days.

Desperate/planless dave is either clueless or loves watching fister put up tons of crooked numbers,

Fister will just be more batting practice. The season's on the ropes.

Padres should see if they can reverse the trade!

It was worth it to bring in Fister and see what he had left. But a big part of why it was worth it was because it was supposed to be easy and cheap to let him walk if things didn't work out. When do we get to that last part?

August 1st.

It was kind of crazy to me that anyone would actually believe that they would sit David Price due to fan reaction.

I now believe that Price is legitimately injured, and that it would not be in the best interest to do a phantom DL, but I don't think the idea is that far fetched.

The media is gone. He attacked 2-3 of their own. He could put up Pedro numbers and they will still be on him. When it comes to criticism, the only thing more thinskinned than the players is the media.

You may have a point about the media.

However, things would certainly be much easier for Price if he's pitching well and winning than if he's not.

OTOH, when they write crap like this, I'm not sure I blame the players:

Yes, Eck was wronged. There is no defending what Price did. But if it was such a big story, why did it take a month to surface? And who is feeding the flames now?

Both sides need to grow up.

BTW, I loved the comment after article citing Borges being fired from the Globe for plagiarism a decade ago. (Edit - comment appears to have been removed. Too bad, it was a link to an article about the firing).

This is a very reasonable post.

It seems that there has to be a better option than Fister. I wonder if a Fister/Velazquez piggy back would work. Fister might be okay for 2-3 innings.

Tough break for Espinoza. Hope he has a speedy recovery and can bounce back from it.

Make that desperate, planless, cliff driving Dave!

In all seriousness though, Dave has a plan and he is not clueless. We may not like his plan, but he has one, and he is a pretty smart baseball guy.

More conspiracy theory. I'm starting to wonder if there was something in Espinoza's medicals at the time of the trade. I found it odd that Dombrowski did not back out of the trade when he had the chance.

Dave Dombrowski seems to be a short-sighted General Manager, which doesn't make him unique. But in Detroit he let his short term goals cripple the Tigers long term, and did so without winning anything. Hopefully that isn't the plan in Boston. ...

You obviously don't buy the theories that Dombrowski was Only Doing What His Owner Wanted nor The Playoffs Are a Crapshoot...

Completely agree. To be fair, I think part of that is due to directives from ownership, but IMO, a competitive team could have been put together without mortgaging the long term. The problem with Dombrowski's aggressive short term philosophy is that it guarantees nothing.

No, but The Playoffs Are a Crapshoot theory is the exact reason that you don't follow the Win At Any Cost theory.

I think 4 straight division titles is a good run, although it was a weak division. 4 straight years in the playoffs is not short term by my definition.

IMO, 4 years in the playoffs is absolutely short term if it leaves your team in bad shape for the next 4 years.

The "not winning" was the least of his issues. The crippling contracts he gave to Cabrera and Verlander - especially Cabrera - could end up going a long way towards holding that franchise back....

The Verlander contract really hasn't been that bad.

The Tigers weak farm system has probably been the biggest issue.

See I don't have a problem with that article. It was simply a reaction to Price's behavior, at the risk of sounding like a child Price started it. I'm not sure why it took a month to surface but that doesn't change the fact that it happened, Price was wrong, and since management won't do anything about it the writer is simply suggesting Price be informed by the fans what they think of his out of line behavior.

Guy has always been kind of a dick going back to his Tornoto days. I'm not giving him a pass for this issue simply because he now wears red sox.

As I have said several times, I have admired Price's pitching since he came up. He had been very good to dominant the entire time prior to his arrival in Boston.

He has what was for him an off year in 2016 and Boston fan aware of his big contract have jumped all over him. His seeming obsession with social media and responding to

his detractors has done nothing to enhance his standing with fan in this market.

Then he is "hurt" in spring training and gets off to a slow start. While he had appeared to be getting back to his old form, overall he has been less than stellar.

Now he attacks a reporter and a prominent Boston player / color man in an unjustified and immature fashion.

Hey Dave, if you want to pull this s*** around here you better be pulling your end on the field. Being a loudmouth mid- level performer does not give you much cred.

Just shut the f*** up and do your job.

Or go get surgery and shut the f*** up.

Nobody wants to hear your s***.
