I am guessing Verlander is very much on Dombrowski's radar.

No doubt, but all signs point to JH paying a lot of attention to the luxury tax stuff so far. We'll see if that changes.

No matter how many times these long term deals turn out bad, which is the large majority of times, it amazes me that GMs still do them and fans still encourage them. They are as bad as drugs. JUST SAY NO!

Yes. Yes. Yes.

During the last series against the Angels, I was thinking about Pujols and his .664 OPS...he's 37 and making $26 million this season and is still owed $114 million for 2018-21. Pure insanity.

The thing is, nobody put a gun to anyone's head during the negotiations that net these contracts. The teams that give these contracts believe (know?) that they can pay this money and still make a profit.

It just gives us some idea of how much money there is floating around out there in Major League Baseball. OUR money... that is. :-(

I think the Pujols contract may have been the most blatantly stupid ever - especially since they had the cautionary example of A-Rod right in front of them.

Being in LA (kinda), they feel the need to have stars, especially Latinx ones. Unfortunately, they will always be the little brother of Los Doyers. And honestly, having Mike Freakin' Trout should be enough to get people to the ballpark.

To be fair, Mike Trout had an MLB career line of .220/.281/.390/.672 in 135 plate appearances when the Los Angeles Angels signed Albert Pujols on December 8, 2011.

What a bum...another overrated prospect, clearly. Angels should have traded him when they had the chance.

True enough. I forgot how long ago they had signed Pujols. Woof.

The Angels made the move as the financially troubled Los Angeles Dodgers are in the process of being sold by Frank McCourt in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, a move that could give the region's NL team a new wealthy owner next year.

Owner Arte Moreno and the Los Angeles Angels shocked the baseball world at the Winter Meetings on Thursday morning by signing the best available hitter and best available pitcher on the free agent market, inking Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson to deals with a combined total of $331.5 million. The reason they were able to make it rain all over Dallas was thanks to a new television contract that will reportedly more than triple their current broadcast revenue.

Albert Pujols will be an Angel for 10 years! Albert Pujols will be on the Angels in April, and you will get to watch him. There is a not-bad chance this will turn out disastrous, and a not-bad chance it will lead the Angels to at least one World Series, and you can try do the math on which of those is more likely but just think about this for a second:

Albert Pujols!

Eduardo Rodriguez @eduardorod5 makes a MLB Rehab start tonight for Portland.

Hurry up and get back you week kneed bastard!

I wonder if the Red Sox should stretch out B.Workman as a starter in AAA for depth purposes?

On the other hand, if E.Rodriguez and B.Johnson get a clean bill of health, they will probably have enough SP depth with Fister in the bullpen and B.Johnson and H.Velazquez in AAA. I hope Dombrowski isn't serious about acquiring S.Gray and is just trying to drive up his price.

It looks like H.Owens is pretty much off the Red Sox radar now with his demotion to AA. They should include him in a trade, maybe another organization can fix him.

They are still treating Workman with kid gloves until they are no longer concerned about his injury history. Not sure they are looking to stretch him out just yet. I think the health of Thornburg and Smith has made the PawBos shuttle more important this year.

On @weei Dombrowski said if Rodriguez gets through 65-70 pitches tonight with Portland he could start for the Sox next week.

Pomerance at 78 innings this year. He had 102 with San Diego last year when we aquired him. And he turned into a pumkin when we got him.

Can he go further than 102 innings this year without losing it?

He had an injury.

It could mean he's fragile or lacks endurance, so he could decline as the year progresses.

It could just mean he had an injury, is over it, and has no durability issues.

I know you don't put much stock in Sox budget restraint talk or luxury tax implications, but taking on Verlander's salary would have a major impact on the budget for 2.5 years. We might even exceed the $20M over the luxury limit penalty that involves more than just monetary penalties.

I doubt it will happen without the Tigers paying part of his salary. My guess is some other team might not demand as much money payments as we might.

I'd love to have Verlander on our team. I'm almost always for adding top level pitchers, but this would be too much to handle, plus, we'd be paying for the highest risk years of his contract as he moves way beyond his prime years.

If they want to take Pablo and $10M a year as part of the deal, I'll listen.

So David Price picked a verbal battle with Dennis Eckersley on the flight to Toronto.

I think Cafarto or some other Globe slag reported it.

What in the actual f*** is his problem?

He's going to get crucified for this.

Break out the vinegar.

What? Do you have some sort of a link to this? It's the first I've heard of it.

Thanks.

It appears that Price may be becoming overly sensitive to the criticism from the fans and the media.

While I believe the "solution" to Price's problem is probably to just STFU and pitch, at the same time I feel his frustration. However, he needs to act like an adult and realize that pitching in Boston isn't like pitching in 'cowbell city". Sox fans actually care about their team and criticism for poor performance is a part of the deal in Boston.

BTW, I have a sense that Dennis Eckersley is one of those people whom it's not a good idea to get into a verbal battle with. What's that about bringing a knife to a gunfight? :)

Maybe Price is turning the corner. Pom has been pretty solid. Picking up Fister was smart move. The patchwork rotation may hold together. Just need Porcello to improve. And of course Sale is great.

Babip!!!!!!

This will go down as the worst signing in the history of baseball not named Alex Rodriguez.

All you Pricies will no doubtedly tell me how he is ace and will opt out.

Lackey was not a good teammate. Price is a bad PR guy but I've never heard him getting into it with his teammates. I don't have to defend his signing.

We were coming off back to back last place finishes, three out of four in fact. Did you really expect our new guy (DD) to stand pat? We did get into the playoffs. I doubt we get there without Price. Come up with an alternative.

What is f***ING UP THIS TEAM IS SIGNING OF PABLO SANDOVAL. $95M pissed away.

Why not wait little longer to criticize Price signing? I don't give a damn about him being nice to the press. Unless he's a cancer among his teammates, then who gives a damn?

Jesus...... what's with this guy? Getting into it with Eck for noticing him not covering first........... Price needs to just play the game......and cover first when he is supposed to.

And for f***s sake........... both Eck and Ob heaped considerable praise on his over all game during their coverage...........

Price is off his rocker...........

He just needs to go 7 and give up 3.5 runs and shut the hell up......

I don't understand it either. From a Pollyanna perspective I can only hope this is the tipping point that makes Price realize he has to chill out.

I don't think Eckersley would want this to become a thing because I assume he wants what's best for the team.

And E-Rod to get his ass back into the roto...

The only good thing I see about him being pissed off being Boston is that he may opt out after three years.....

So that we can pay $30 million + per year for a guy that isn't as good as Price?
