3 or 4 bad outings is what you expect from you 3 or 4 starter. Not your ace. I count 6.

5ip / 5er

3.2 / 8

7. / 6

4.2. / 6

2.1 / 6

6.1 / 4

I think it's 5 bad starts. 6.1 / 4 falls closer to mediocre than bad.

4 of the 5 bad starts came in his first 7, only 1 in his last 12.

If he keeps trending like he has been he can still end up with a very strong season.

I will pin 2 losses on him out of 38. I have never disagreed that the 4-5 spots are the biggest problem.

Really? I can pick out 3 by the middle of May.

Apr 11 Balt, 5 IP, 5 ER, 9-7 loss

Apr 21 The Mighty Rays 3.2 IP, 8 ER, 12-8 loss

May 7 Yankees 4.2 IP, 6 ER, 8-2 loss

I like the way he's trending though. Plus his high K rate suggests that his arm and velocity are just fine.

3.14 ERA over his last 12 starts. Basically, people are complaining because he had a suck April/beginning of May. Jon Lester used to do that almost every year, it seemed like...if he pitches well the rest of the year, the slow start will be forgotten.

In the meantime, the velocity is back and the peripheral stats all look great. It will take some time to get his ERA down to what people think of as "ace" levels, but he's well on his way there. Price is still not even a concern for this team, IMO.

I want to take this post out to dinner and then introduce it to my parents.

I'm still concerned that a good lineup, like the Rangers for instance, are still able to light him up.

If he can shut down good teams (ie: not the Rays) after the break, I'll be happy.

There are many that never ever considered Lester an "ace"...including our front office that offered him #3/4 starter money.

And the peripherals are fun and all but the only stat I care about from my SP is era....

But if he keeps on pitching like his last start I agree with you the bad first half will be forgiven.

He pitched 8 IP/3 ER with 10K's against the Rangers before the outing against the Rays, 8 IP/3 ER against Baltimore in their last meeting, and 7 IP/2 ER, 6.1 IP/2 ER against Toronto in their last two meetings.

DFA Price!!!!

Come on. Really? Show me one post on any thread on this forum where any of the posters that are pointing out prices struggles have said that the Red Sox should dfa him.

I don't even recall a post saying the sox shouldn't have signed the best available SP this past offseason.

It's a common joke here on Talksox. Chillax.

"DFA Player X" is an old Talksox trope that has been going on for years. He's not saying anyone actually thinks they should DFA Price.

Example: Vazquez is having a tough year and lots of posters think he's better suited to AAA. If he comes up and hits a walkoff HR, an astute poster would say "DFA Vazquez" in a joking manner.

The rules here are easy;

Do As I Say, Not As I Do.

There is only one rule: if you make a gamethread and the Sox win, you need to make a gamethread for the very next game.

Good to know, but I don't make game threads.

I did not move any goal posts. I have repeatedly said two things:

1.If Price rights himself and we don't fix the 4 and 5 slots this team will go down the tubes regardless of whether Price wins the Cy Young award.

2. If DD fixes the 4 and 5 slots and Price continues to be spotty in the second half, this team will still make the playoffs.

Hence, my conclusion that Price is not THE problem. I have always said THE problem meaning the critical problem. Those have been my goal posts. They have not and will not move.

I never said that Price has been great or perfect, just that he is not THE problem. I repeat it and stand by it. The problem is the 4 and 5 slots. I am not engaging in a blame game which is really just a lot of whiny. I am calling out to the FO for the solution to a fixable problem, not whining that our ace has had 3 or 4 bad outings in the first half.

1. This was never a discussion about what Dombrowski needed to fix on this team, nor did anyone ever state that Dombrowski needed to replace Price, until you changed the direction of the argument in a recent post.

2. No one has ever said that Price is THE problem, just that he was part of the problem. Just because the 4/5 slots are the larger problem does not mean that it is the only problem. You have said that Price is not a problem at all, until you recently changed direction and said that Price is not THE problem.

I quote: "Price is not a problem. Identifying him as any sort of problem is completely misguided."

3. When you disagree about a player that I defend, I'm a homer. When you disagree about a player that I don't think has performed up to expectations, I'm a whiner. These are tactics that posters resort to when the debate is lost.

Price is not on my list of things to worry about. That said, I don't think it's unfair to point out that he has not performed up to expectations.

I don't believe anyone has said otherwise.

2.6 fWAR Kimmi, $20.4 million value to date. Not far below expectations *if you buy FanGraphs WAR for pitchers*.

His peripherals are extremely strong. But part of the problem was the lowered velocity in his first few starts, something FIP does not aacount for.
