I think that the new systems should be employed in concert with the current home plate ump to monitor his ability to get the calls right.

My twist would be that each home plate ump be fitted with one of those "Running Man" necklaces.

If the ump misses a call he would get a taser type jolt of electricity ( I would not blow his head off ).

I think that this system would yield fare more consistent and correct calls.

I like that out of the box thinking.

I think that strapping the electricity collars to 5 close family members would even be better.

So I guess taking a royal siesta for a week makes me miss out on all this juicy action. There's a reason why I don't like to post on all these in depth threads, because everyone always shoots down my perspective (rightfully so), but all matters aside, I don't like what has happened to this forum since everyone came over from BDC. Yes, about 95% of you are positive additions, bringing great new opinions on matters that are very important and very entertaining to have educated discussions about, but the 5% that don't meet these standards are really ruining this place IMO. It's not my place to speak up, but I suggest you take a good look at yourselves, evaluate your childish behavior on the Internet, fix it, or be booted. It's that simple. It shouldn't take the youngest user on this site to tell people that they need to grow up a little bit.

Never stop feeling your perspective isn't as valid as anyone else, Thunder!

Your words are valid on all the points you made.

And your following post was excellent.

Another internet Freud.

Swing and a miss, Skippy.

Actually, I prefer Rogers.

Freud is so passe. Unless you have mother issues.:P

Or how about if he makes 5 missed calls in a three inning period, a lucky fan, of the opposing team (which means there would have to be two available, one for each team) gets to take an EMP at the ump from deep centerfield!!!! ??? :o

automated balls and strikes is so obvious common sense it will never happen. It's not that the umps are bad at the job - it is a job that is impossible to do well.

If I recall my history, DD, and I'm a fairly interested student of world civilizations, if it weren't for the horde you mention, the Roman Empire might still have a solid footing as a super power.

For all the good that came out of Rome, it was tempered by barbarism. Odd, eh?

But then there are those who imply the barbarians were the source of the Dark Ages. I guess we can't have it all.

However, the umps in Red Sox games 48 and 49 were horrible.

I again reference them, but has anyone noticed that I was highlighting two games out of 50? That is LESS THAN FOUR TENTHS OF A PERCENT of all games played? An average of 1 game out of 25?

In other words, for those who are whining about my whining, (not meaning you David) it is a minuscule amount.

The "Dark Ages". by and large, are an exaggeration, if not an outright myth. Historical bias causes us to look back on those times with disdain for the culture, but in reality there were advances in medicine, mathematics, industry, biology, and dozens of other fields just as there were in any other era. Conversely, the Renaissance is highly exaggerated in the other direction. I'm going to stop before I drag this topic into a history lecture that will bore everyone except me, but you should all read up on this sort of stuff sometime, it's fascinating.

Anyways, back onto another subject I know a lot about and enjoy very much: control through pain. I love the idea of umpire shock collars, but it's one of those great ideas that will be ruined by a union, like child labor, 23 hour work days, and whipping.

Ahhh, we could have had fun, my friend. I would not have been bored but we have traveled a long way from the OP, eh? :D I purposefully referenced only "western" civ. It is a weakness in our overall educational scope. It is as if nothing happened in Pacific Rim Asia or sub-Saharan Africa. Heh... I'll shut up and go back to BB's and K's. But we could have had fun.

Ever notice that there's rarely complaining about the umps after a win?

ever notice that you rarely show up after the Sox win?

If you guys just ignore him, he'll get bored and go away. Its clear he's a troll, he is a Yankees fan on a Red Sox forum who makes very little quality posts, and makes comments/threads to draw reactions that he hopes will piss you off. If you are gonna troll, at least be funny. Here is some quality trolling/stupidity, take some notes from these experts:

he wont go away. we tried telling you guys this but you would rather believe the MFY troll than the 4-5 Red Sox fans that were trying to give you guys the "heads up" on babe. he was banned minimum 100 times on BDC. unfortunately we werent sophisticated and could only ban by username and not by IP address. so everyday he would come back under a new identity. he would usually out himself within a few posts but the fact is it didnt matter if we ignored him or not. he would still take the time to create a new username to logon and troll.

Again, banning people here is based on actual behavior, not hearsay. If he's a troll, he'll get banned. It's the mod's/admin's decision either way. Twenty five posters from BDC, or DodgerBlues, or CardsNation can come in saying a poster is a troll, but if he's not trolling here, why would he be banned? What is this, a Kim Jong's reign?

lets see how long it takes before you feel that sting called "pride" allow you to do the right thing and actually listen to fellow Sox fans instead of always trying to ARGUE with fellow Sox fans......

We've banned more Sox fans than Yankee fans over the time here... because of course we have. Being a Sox fan doesn't give you instant credibility. And I remind you that by launching personal attacks on TheBabeStrikesBack you are technically violating the terms of service. At the moment you guys ahve trolled Babe more than Babe has trolled you... think about that please.

Best way you can get rid of Babe right now is just give him rope. If he's as advertised he'll practically ban himself.

Personally I think the guy's nothing but a gadfly. An irritant nothing more, posting inane comments that you eye-rollingly tolerate and then get back to your own business. We've dealt with those before. It's nothing new here. If he insists on trying to be more than that, he'll probably go.

Back to topic. Not sure if you guys watched the ATL vs SFG game but the home-plate ump was extending the zone way in and out. It was simply ridiculous.

i saw some of this iortiz. i watch alot of games on extra innings and i have seen a ton of bad strike zone calls this season. i dont know if more teams are showing the pitchzone or what but there are a lot of "misses" by the umps so far.....

Yup, if an ump can't maintain a consistent zone, he needs to be let go at year end.

i wonder what the contract states with the umpires? how about instead of year end they do week to week monitoring. if you hit a certain negative threshhold you get relegated to the minor leagues and have to earn your way back to the show.....

Unfortunately that idea won't work because if you make people too nervous about screwing up they screw up even more. Have to bypass that one and go directly to robots.

That's all I'm asking for. Just one robot behind the plate. Maybe even keep a challenge system as a fail safe for the robot.

To me, just worrying about how the ump is calling balls and strikes really takes me out of the game. Just get it right the first time please.

Rule of Two. Wherever there is one troll, there must be another troll even greater than the first.

Two serious questions:

Practical question: Exactly what is a troll? Or is it like pornography in that you know it when you see it?

Philosophical question: Is calling a troll as a troll a violation of the TOS?

What the hell are you talking about? I'm not a mod. I can't ban anyone. I have said many times on here that I am merely stating how things work around here, and even the mod himself has explained his POV.

1) Yes, like porn, certain lines have to be crossed for a user to be considered a troll, just like for a movie to be considered porn.

2) I don't think so.

How about this?

Set up a machine behind home plate that determins ball vs strike. The machine is carefully tuned to be at leat 99.5% accurate on all strike and ball calls which would mean it would usually make about 1 or 2 mistakes over the course of the game.

On every pitch, either dugout can appeal a ball-strike call to the machine.

If the machine agrees with the umpire, the dugout gets a strike. If the machine disagrees, the ump gets a strike on him. Dugouts with 3 strikes can't appeak ball strike calls. If the umpire gets three strikes, the machine takes over the ball and strike calls for the remainder of the game. The umpire still calls fair and foul, safe and out, but balls and strikes are taken out of his hands for the remainder of the game, unless he's as good at them as the machine is.
