we had the winning run at 3rd base (one of our fastest kids) in one of Manny's 10U tourney games this weekend. no outs and the bottom of the order up against their closer. i would have liked the Manager to have one of the first 2 try a squeeze bunt for the walkoff win but instead all 3 K'd. we ended up losing in xtras.

that's about the only time i want to see a bunt.

It's a little surprising no one has called for our pitching coach's head yet. Of course, no one really knows what he does.

They chart pitches and drink. That is about the scope of their duties.

Some on here have said that the team's record is a direct reflection of the manager. Well, can I blame the june swoon on him or does he only get credit for April and May?

You can give Farrell some of the blame.

I am starting to turn against Farrell. It's not due to in game strategy moves, but just a vague gut feeling. I never liked his base running philosophy, and when the team is losing it makes it look less like aggressiveness and more like foolishness. I can't blame him for the poor pitching and the hitters kind of cooling off so maybe my gut feeling is too harsh. I feel a bit guilty criticizing him and maybe I just was taken in by the strong start the team had. Maybe this team just doesn't have the staying power to contend. I'll have to wait and see how this homestand goes before I give my thumb up or down to Farrell. But I have gone from being strong defender of his to not really caring if they do fire him before the end of the season. I guess I'm just a fair weather fan.

Please feel free to defend Farrell and label me a hypocrite and a turncoat.

Called the problem with the super-aggressive baserunning way before fiascos like today.
A trademark of Farrell teams. When the team is going well these things get overlooked, but they are inexcusable. The blame goes directly to the coaching staff. We have seen this pattern for much too long with Farrell.

I am still on the fence about Farrell. Personally, I don't think his in game moves have been that bad. Also, I don't think he's lost the clubhouse or anything like that.

That said, if the players continue to play like they did in June, that would make 3 straight years of this team underperforming, rather grossly I might add, under Farrell's leadership. That does lead one to wonder what the heck is going on with this coaching staff and Farrell in particular.

All that said, firing Farrell is not the answer to our current woes.

You can agree with the philosophy of aggressive baserunning or not, but that's the way the philosophy usually works. Bad outs are going to be made on the basepaths, but runs are also going to be created by the aggressive approach. In other words, you take the bad with the good, and hope the good outweighs the bad.

That said, I agree that it seems there is a lack of coaching when it comes to whether the benefit of advancing an extra base outweighs the risk of making an out.

JBJ's decision was a terrible one.

No, it is not. But you know how it goes with these things. It's the easy thing to do.

They goofed by bringing him back. Sox played better under Lovullo. Farrell doesn't seem to make the smartest decisions on or off the field.

Lots of us were ready to dump Farrell, so this isn't entirely a reaction to the June swoon either.

Are you positive it was Lovullo they were playing their asses off for, or new boss Dombrowski, the guy that pretty much has their careers in his hands?

100% positive. I had the players fill out a survey monkey poll.

Or perhaps they were rallying around Farrell's battle with cancer.

I'd like to think that, but I'm cynical when comes to what motivates players.

I think it's self-preservation, mostly.

You're probably right, but I'd like to think otherwise. :)

Speaking of motivators, wouldn't it be nice to have Tito right now?

I might become a Tribe fan. ;)

Nah, the Tribe is blowing the doors off everyone in spite of Tito. :D

Horrible month...now 5.5 games back of the O's. Farrell is on thin ice again, I would say.

Strangely enough, I agree. I don't mind defending specific decisions by Farrell, but always think a manager is partly responsible for the overall team performance. Right now the pitching is getting worse and the hitting is falling back from the highs of April and May. This is beyond question a June swoon.

I'm also beginning to think Willis is on thin ice.. A lot of guys are under-performing and/or downright just sucking this year and doesn't seem like improvement has been made since he's been hired.
