I actually think he will bounce back. The year-1 swoon for FA's with big contracts happens a lot.

You know else happens a lot, after the first year struggles?

More struggles, mediocrity, injury or worse.\

Just look at the list a couple pages back.

Carlos Beltran:

Year 1 of his Mets contract: .744 OPS.

Rest of his Mets contract: .896 OPS.

There are a lot of examples of guys with Heyward's profile (younger guy, athletic, good skillset) struggling to adapt the first year of his contract, then turning it around.

just turned 27 one of the best outfielders in the league the last 3 or 4 seasons ... betting on this year being a fluke seems reasonable

Beltran was coming off 4 straight seasons of an OPS over .800. Heyward hasn't been over .800 since 2012.

The Cubs paid for his defense AND expected his bat to revert to 2012 levels. His contract just isn't worth it.

How many are you including in your "best" list?

For what he had produced and his age, the deal was kind of a bargain - he has been awful this season. What is funny about Heyward is that his defense and on-base skills have been able to justify his contract while the power has been up and down. (his OPS has had more O, so his overall impact has been solidly above average)

You could make some interesting comparisons here with say JD Drew.

He's probably in the top 25 OFers in the league. I doubt he'd crack a top 20 though.

Top 10ish when the total package is included

JD Drew with a worse bat, but better glove? I'd buy that.

Heyward's career OBP is about 35 points less than Drew's and that includes the nightmare 2011 season for JD.

But Heyward had something Drew and Beltran did not: Upside. He's still pretty young.

He was 27 when he signed that contract. Let's not pretend that he was being put out to pasture.

The comparison with Drew was more to the point of a guy who is so supernaturally talented that he will always be seen negatively ... even though the guy in front of them is pretty damn good.

Drew was a better hitter, although both had good on-base skills, especially with respect to league averages. And Heyward is a superb defensive player - how much that goes into the soup is a fair question. Getting him for 23M (and really it might be a de facto 3 year deal with options and such) per season is a good value. His bat has been remarkably bad this season.

Posted
But that's comparing apples to oranges. He did not have full autonomy with the Sox, as he now does with the Cubs.

Good point, but people are giving him credit for the rings too.

Pardon the long list, but here are two lists:

First is the biggest FA signings since 2011.

Second are the biggest contracts of all time.

How many of these guys have been unqualified successes?

How many have done a decent to good job?

Now, combine the two totals and see if it comes to over 33% or 50%.

Where is Nelson Cruz, whose contract resembles Adam Dunn's?

I meant to only include the larger and long signings, but I forgot to erase Dunns' when I changed the criteria to $80M early and $85M later.

The big SP'er signings this past winter:

Price 9-8 4.34 ERA/1.28 WHIP (team:11-13)

Greinke 10-3 3.62 ERA/1.162 WHIP (team: 12-5)

* Highest ERA since 2011, highest WHIP since 2012 & been on DL

Zimmerman 9-5 4.44 ERA/1.305 WHIP (team 10-6)

* Highest ERA since 2010, highest WHIP since 2010 & is on the DL now

Cueto 13-3 2.93 ERA/1.075 (team: 18-5)

* 2nd highest ERA since 2010, 2nd highest WHIP since 2012 & no missed starts

Samardzija 9-8 4.40 ERA/1.234 WHIP (team 11-11)

* 2nd highest ERA since 2010 and no missed starts.

It's early still, but only Cueto has started off strong and stayed healthy.

Funny thing, since many said his mechanics begged for an injury. (They still might...)

Cueto also SUCKED in the AL. There's no telling if he'd pitch this well in Boston.

No telling for sure, but he was 14-6 2.59 ERA (.627 OPS) in inter-league games, before struggling last year.

Now we have Benintendi for 6 years of team control.....cheaper to develop talent in house. (but in all honesty, he was a good player coming out of college and we got him because we came in last in 2014)

I don't know about you but he sure looks to be the left fielder for us. Maybe Young can DH a little next year. Get both Hanley and Young against Lefties. Against righties, Shaw can play first and Hanley DH.

His form last year in KC did not give any sort of reassurance. I don't blame the Red Sox for not going after him. And in SF he has thrown fewer fastballs and taken advantage of the numerous cavernous parks there are in the NL West. (yes I know Coors and Arizona are more homerun friendly)

A flyball pitcher in the AL East is always worrisome

His form last year in KC did not give any sort of reassurance. I don't blame the Red Sox for not going after him. And in SF he has thrown fewer fastballs and taken advantage of the numerous cavernous parks there are in the NL West. (yes I know Coors and Arizona are more homerun friendly)

He's got a worse ERA at SD (2 starts there) than overall. He's better in LA (1 start).

He has the 5th best ERA- (which takes park size and other factors into consideration) over the last 5 years.

Over the past 5 seasons, only 32 pitchers have pitched over 800 IP:

Cueto ranks...

22nd in FB% at 32%

10th best in HR/FB (9.6%)

11th best in GB% (47%)

11th best in K-BB% at 16%

5th best in WHIP at 1.08

2nd best in lowest hard balls hit% at 26%.

I had worries about his mechanics and injury projection, but he has not been known as a FB pitcher.

Last night's Yankee game turned into a disaster for the relief pitching. Giving up a 5 run 7th inning with a succession of pitchers unable to get outs. That's after Kimbrel couldn't find the plate the night before. Can't blame JF for any of that. The outlook can't be considered positive with a breakdown in a key area as we witnessed last night. Funny thing is Abad had good stuff but would use part of the at bat, it only to give up fat pitches instead of staying with his best.

The lineup looked interesting with Betts batting third and most of the guys looking good with the exception of Hanley and the 3rd base combo. Hanley is 0 for 9 against the Yankees after coming back from a poor road trip. Shaw was suspect against lefties but Hill was no better so that move didn't work. With so many base runners last night, one hit from that duo would have produced runs. Maybe some move could be made to stop the rally killing there.

With Ortiz getting a contusion on his shin, Bogaerts getting plunked on the elbow with a fast ball and Betts having a sore calf muscle the woes continued.

Hard game to watch! No championship quality ball.

Agreed, but it's just 1 of 162 games, and at least our offense didn't look totally dead- like on the road.
