Phantom DL stint to drop all of the pounds.

Maybe. Could be a viable way for the Sox to save face in this situation.

Long term the Sox still look like major boneheads with this deal if he does not have a resurgence on both sides of the ball.

The entire affair is mucho embarrassing.

I say cut him loose and move on.

That's not racist enough, therefore not funny. FAIL

The correct phrase would be: "Me rindo, no aguanto a este gordo"

This post was directed at Jacko by the way.

Why? You don't see any potential from him?

I think we are loaded with back end arms and don't need an average position player.

Trading for Castillo for a back end arm or an average position player would not make very much sense, IMO.

I thought I just read that Pablo woke up feeling much better, so there are no further tests at this time.

I would not be surprised if the Sox put Pablo on the DL as sort of a "face-saving" measure. The situation is one they created, BTW.

But putting Pablo on the DL give the Sox an "out" if Shaw gets off to a really slow start this season. It won't look so bad that the Sox started Shaw if they had to, due to Pablo being on the DL.

I'm not saying that Shaw will stink. I actually think he will be fine there, though I'm not sure he can hold up for an entire season. For the record, my defense of Pablo has little to do with a lack of faith in Shaw.

You are correct. I failed to update.

it's also possible that Sandoval's "injury" will allow him to take the seat he has earned while not being particularly embarrassed.

I don't think that the Red Sox planned for this to happen, Sandoval made it happen. He lost the job. Shaw has pretty much won the job to this point. Players get rewarded with playing time by working hard and outplaying their competition. Common sense and decency has got to prevail at some point. I'm pretty sure Shaw is the kind of player we want out there. He is happy to be a part of the team. In this case, he deserves to be treated with the respect that he has earned. I'm leaning toward your direction with what they should do with him. this is a big test for Pablo. We will find out soon what type of person he is. He could conceivably still help this team. It is up to him.

Farrell announced today that Vazquez would definitely not be on the Opening Day roster. It is undecided whether he would stay in extended spring training or be sent to AAA.

David Murphy has exercised his opt out clause. The Sox have 48 hours to respond.

Most final roster decisions are expected to come tomorrow.

Too bad about Murphey. I think that the Sox may need him later this year.

I suspect that he will land in Baltimore or Cleveland. Not sure who needs a lhh outfielder more.

I am sure that Murphy will get picked up quickly by another team. I'm surprised he didn't get a major league contract this offseason to begin with. I wish there were a way to keep Murphy until we had a better sense of what we're going to get from Castillo.

One writer summed it up nicely. It's April - You keep your depth.

David Murphy is a fringe major leaguer at this point in his career. Stashing him on your roster is silly. You can always pick up a guy like that throughout the year for minimal cost.

Did Shaw ever play a game in LF? I heard Farrell wanted test it. But with the statue at 3B, Shaw has been more than filling out for the incumbent.

No. They pulled back from doing that since there was more of a need at 3b.

See, it's not just internet commentators that are worried about Pablo at 3b...

No, it's not silly if he would agree to a minor league assignment.

But he doesn't want to. If he did, they'd keep him around.

The Sox officially released Murphy today.

It looks like 24 of the 25 roster spots have been determined, with the last spot being a battle between Noe Ramirez and Elias.

I get the fact that Murphy didn't fit but I like him and always have. I hate the fact that such a commitment was made to Castillo. Ultimately I don't think that from a baseball production standpoint that he will do more for us than Murphy could have. Castillo represents just another in a line of players that we hope will become something special. We knew what we had in Murphy.

I don't like either of those option. Elias struggles this spring and is a lefty, a disadvantage facing a division with RHH sluggers. I don't believe they will go with him.

Ramirez seems to get hit around with long ball as well.

Smith couldn't return fast enough.

And where does that leave Chris Young?

I'm sure we know as much as Farrell does.

I'm hoping for an 0-6 start, Farrell gets canned, Lovullo is promoted and the Sox play like they did at the end of last year. If Farrell sticks around knowing that he's on the hot seat, the Sox may crawl to AS break at .500.

But for the cancer, I think Farrell would have been shown the door as part of a clean sweep with Ben and Larry. I would like to see Lovullo get the job, but unfortunately, we would have to collapse in April for that to happen, and none of us wants to see that.
