Got an email from the Red Sox announcing a new mascot joining Wally his younger sister Tessie. Given the number of other emails I've gotten from pushing seasons tickets their marketing efforts are going full guns. One wonders how much demand is down after two crappy years.

I think that with just a couple more tweaks they could turn it all around. I think that they are still looking like they are going into the season with a couple of question marks that they could do something about. Talked to a friend yesterday who gets to a number of games every year. He said they would have to pay him to go this year. i plan to go but I hope that they aren't done dealing.

Wow. I wonder if Remy will now have a miniature Tessie in the booth to go with miniature Wally.

Conjures up some bad thoughts.

I just hope Remy is around to talk about it. I think they may be easing him out too, Jeremy Kaperstein was once Remy's agent.

While I can understand why the Sox have added this new mascot I will say that I am more like Red Auerbach in that I don't really care to see more of this s*** in baseball.

Of course I believe that there should now be a section of the park rated "R". I miss the days when people would yell vulgarities during the game. It just added color to the experience.

I remember the days when you couldn't drink beer at your seats at Fenway. I remember my father standing at the concession stand watching the game from there.

No matter. Things won't be the same without Don.

I am still ripping angry about Don getting the boot. O'Brien is a decent announcer but I just don't see him being as entertaining.

I went to a game a few years ago with my mom and stepdad. There was a guy a few rows behind us, drunk, screaming vulgarities repeatedly. After about ten or fifteen minutes, someone finally got fed up and reported him and security came and dragged him away.

I'm all for the authentic baseball experience, but I can financially justify maybe one Red Sox game a year, I would prefer to enjoy the game without a guy screaming obscenities uninterrupted at the top of his lungs ten feet away from me.

This is something that we wholeheartedly agree on.

And something that we wholeheartedly disagree on. I have always preferred baseball on the radio. Castiglione is excellent, and more than makes up for any flaws in his co-hosts. I never enjoyed the shtick that Remy and Orsillo put on every gameday, it distracted from the game. On the radio, since you can't see it, they have to be on top of every pitch, every play, and I love that. I guess it doesn't matter to me because I still plan on listening to the radio, but I'm sure O'Brien will do well. He's much better at irrelevant chatter than Castiglione, so he should adjust well.

I think the demand is down a lot. Last season was the first time in eons that they have made season ticket packages available. This off season they have many types of season ticket packages being marketed and there are plenty still available.

I met Tessie at winter weekend and also wallys parents were there lol.

I will be honest though when I was at the town hall Jerry Remy and Dan O'Brien were sitting in front of me and they were wicked nice, but the NESN executive that was with them was a jerk! He kept saying come on remy and dan lets go into the green room and get away from all this. He goes come on folks jerry will be signing autographs tomorrow. Finally jerry said NAH MAN I wanna sign for these people, I don't mind at all.

I mean I get we are ALL upset about Don but there isn't much we can do about it now that he is with the Padres.

They tried to get me to spend $250 last year on a 10 game package, and that was one ticket to 10 different games. I didn't do it though because I wanted to be able to pick my games.

Interesting that it is down so much that the packages are not moving. Maybe it is a little early though. Last time I was a season ticket holder, you just walked up, somebody took you out to take a look at the seats you wanted and if you liked them, just got your tickets. Could have had just about anything you wanted really, maybe with the exception of the loge seats right around the dugout over to just right of the plate. I always thought the seats in the first couple rows under the roof were prime. Shade from the sun and protection from the rain. When I was a season ticket holder that is exactly where the team wives sat. Gotta' figure that was a prime location.

Tickets are so much now and if there is some delay in ticket sales that you guys with more recent season ticket experience are sensing, it might be because there is winning and losing and then there is flat embarrassing. They were bad in 2014 and flat embarrassing in 2015. Yet some of the most troubling aspects of the 2015 squad are still here. So I think fans might be taking a wait and see attitude. Nobody wants to blow $500.00 on a day at the park (family tics plus parking plus food and assorted memorabilia) only to watch an embarrassing 2016 rendition of the 2015 nonsense. Red Sox marketing has the park itself which is a baseball destination and an asset in that regard. But the home fans of the team won't sit there and watch embarrassing...not much anyway.

I'm not so sure about what you suggest. There seems to be an endless stream of at least casual fans who just "must go to Fenway to see the Sox". I don't know the attendance figures. That park is always close to being full and I never bought into that fake sell-out streak anyway.

Posted (edited)

I actually think those casual fans are the most likely to pass if in fact the dynamic I suggested is at play. However it won't effect that fans that stream in from out of town who consider Fenway now a baseball destination.

But again, I am not any longer conversant on the state of season ticket sales and or package deal sales and I am sure there are others here that are much more on top of that. Actually hoping that one of the folks in the discussion can tell us if in fact advanced ticket sales are not at the pace one would expect for this period or if it is in fact a bit too early. If we are not in a high advance ticket sales period yet, it can't be that far off. I would have bought my season seats by now just as an example...but believe me that is info from the long ago 70's. Since then I hae either sat in company owned seats or bought tickets a month or two in advance of going.

For one thing, while the Sox held the line on ticket prices for 2015, I would have given strong consideration to doing it again in 2016. A price increase might turn out to be a tough pill to swallow under the circumstances.

I would rate you a baseball fan though or for one thing you would not be looking at and posting in a baseball forum.

I consider casual fans people that are spending entertainment $ on baseball as opposed to spending baseball $ on baseball. Those spending entertainment $ on baseball just find something more entertaining if the team is playing embarrassing ball. There are a a bunch of things you can do with your family for $500.

I see that a lot now a days. I used to work security in a high rise here in Boston and so many people who spend millions when the sox were winning because the sox were winning lol. Although I did get lucky once on my birthday back in 2010. I got front row batting deck seats from a company that couldn't go. One time I had great seats for free. Big papi actually wished me happy birthday which made my day.

I wonder if that's the same NESN executive that wanted Orsillo fired.

And yes, I'm still ticked about that.

Kennedy stated recently that ticket sales are currently down 2% from where they normally are this time of year. He also said that they have had to work harder in the PR department the past couple of years than they have had to in the past, with things like more giveaway promotions, Tessie, and Winter Weekend.

Jerry is aces. During Spring Training at the old facility at City of Palms Park fans would stand up on the seats in the last row in front of the announcers' booth and roll him baseballs between innings which he always signed. I never saw him leave his chair between innings to avoid signing or to wave anyone off.

That's pretty cool.

Jerry is great to fans.

A buddy I go to the games with is in a wheelchair. We use to go to Jerry's hotdog stand, across from gate D (now, we go to the restaurant).

The one time we saw Jerry out there, he made a point to come over and say hi to us.

He insisted on giving my friend an autograph, but we didn't have anything for him to sign.

"Give me your ticket, I'll sign that!".

He really could not have been nicer.

Awesome story.

That's cool about him signing the balls between innings too.

Jerry is way cool!
