Papelbon has held up a lot better than most of us expected. I was strongly against the signing at the time, but looking back at the guys the Red Sox have given up for bad relief pitching over the last few years, signing Papelbon would have been much more efficient. Thankfully we've had Koji, because this team has traded a lot of value for relieviers in recent years, many of them busts.

2007 -- Gagne for Murphy

2010 -- 12 million for Bobby Jenks...

2011 -- Josh Reddick for Andrew Bailey. Melacon for Jed Lowrie.

2012 -- Jack Hanrahan for a pile of prospects that might have been better used in another trade. Fortunately Holt came along for the ride.

2013 -- Thornton for a tradeable prospect.

2015 -- Kimbrel for Margot/Guerra. Carson Smith for Wade Miley.

That's all on the Sox FO signing the wrong guys. This is failthought. It's easier to look better in the NL without the DH and pitching for a s***** team. Then he goes to Washington, chokes their superstar, and he's pitching worse than a bunch of guys making league minimum. I don't get the rosey Papelbon glasses.

Great assessment Pal.

Kimbrel has a 0.737 WHIP and is 12/13 in save opportunities. Papelbon is a distant (and overrated) memory.

Papelbon is riding on the "Way to crappy reliever" highway. ™

Your hate for the person doesn't allow you see the player LOL!

Dombrowski sucks at signing relievers too, so its not exactly like that will change.

Signing/trading for RP has always been extremely inefficient from a W/L perspective, but personally I'd rather have paid the stupid money and have all those assets back. Josh Reddick alone is worth what the Phillies paid for Papelbon.

Every time I compare Kimbrel to Papelblows he gets hammered. I will not do so again.

You will never learn. ;) LOL! I don't think you can take this loss on yourself. It will be one of our worst losses of the year. Horrendous. I hope people don't go on posting about what a good job Porcello is doing. He is well on his way to his level -- a 4 ERA. That being said,if we had 3 Porcello's at the bottom of the rotation we would be in better shape than having Kelly and Buch.

Porcello is cy young compared to kelly-buch. I will take what I can get.
Porcello is a 4/5 and Price has been inconsistent pitching at a 4/5 level. They and the chubby knuckleballer are anchoring our staff. The other 2 spots are holes so big that they are an abyss.

Can Papa throw over an inning?

Porcello's biggest problem is that he's faced Toronto's offense three times this year.
They have been in a collective team slump to this point of th season. This is the time that you want to face them.

And he is probably going to face them again... and some against NY, BAL and TB who are potent at offense. This is the ALE, isn't it?

He has improved this year, but he is going to be around 4 at the end of the year, though.

It's called collaterals.

They tried to replace consistency and durability so hard--allstar closer production--to the point that they had to spend big bucks and give up value in the process.

I'd prefer to wait until the second half of the season after Bautista gets banged up. Small sample size be damned, the Jays have some scary bats.

Those bats have been cold up to now. The odds are that their offense will get very hot as the season progresses.

Hate to keep saying it, but swapping Lester and Lackey for Porcello and Kelly was a colossal pair of blunders.

No Kidding!! I was thinking just this morning that that trade was what got us where we are. I'd like to know what it was that made the FO think that decimating our pitching staff was a good idea. :(

The Lackey trade looks really, really bad. And yes, that one is on Ben.

I'd agree, except we got JBJ and Swihart as compensation picks when Beltre left (yay for the old comp system).

Theo was the master at getting those comp picks.

Were both of those for Beltre, or was one for VMart?

Craig Hansen.

Not all of the picks worked out, but I said he was a master at getting extra draft picks. The more picks you have, the better the chances are that you hit gold with some of them.

You can knock Theo all you want, but he will already go down in history as one of the greatest GMs. If the Cubbies win the World Series in the next couple of years, forget about it.

It's a shame that he spent the last 5 years of his time with the Sox not being able to draft or develop starting pitching.

LOL. He is a regular Branch Rickey... Right fan girl? LOL! It is no secret that you favor Theo, which is why I will occasional tweak you about him.

I only have one beef about him-- that he walked away from the Red Sox twice. That makes me shake my head. You get the GM job of your favorite team at a very young age and win 2 World Series becoming a sort of folk hero and you walk away. He spit in the face of his good fortune. I hope the Cubs collapse on him and never win anything.

Also, he knew nothing about pitching except that he can't hit it, so I guess that I have 2 beefs with him.
