This is a precursos to the acquisition of another starter IMO.

Interesting take and I hope that you are right. Just wonder if they think that Owens, Johnson, and Wright will basically give them Miley like production. I like Miley but I think the he is backed up here pretty well. Another deal that moves us forward.

Carson Smith had a 25% strikeout rate on top of a 65% groundball rate. Excellent numbers -- he'll probably be a good guy for a relief ace role.

Excellent trade, and I say that as someone who wanted to keep Miley. Smith is dominating, and he gives the Sox 4 outstanding relievers - Kimbrel, Smith, Koji, and a hopefully less taxed Tazawa, plus Layne, who is an excellent LOOGY.

And Elias has numbers that are eerily similar to Miley, but he's younger and much cheaper and is cost-controlled for five seasons.

Hard to see how this trade is anything but terrific. DD is kicking ass this off season.

Well, I haven't had the opportunity to read the threads in last couple months or so but IMO I like what DD has done so far.

Not sure about Price's contract but it is what it is.

Still I think we need another SP. We have an ace surrounded by a bunch of No. 4s-5s, so a guy like Cuero or Kazmir would be a perfect fit in our team and to call it great offseason.

I agree. I really like this trade, and I'm a Miley fan also. I like that both pitchers that we acquired are cost-controlled for 5 years.

For all you fans of WAR, here's a nice stat that somebody tweeted about Smith:

RELIEVERS WITH A HIGHER fWAR THAN CARSON SMITH, 2015

Cody Allen

Aroldis Chapman

Dellin Betances

That's it.

Good job Dombrowski.

Dombrowski may be getting a bigger checkbook at his disposal compared to BC, but he is also making huge splashes and improving the team immensely. The pen now looks formidable minus a solid lefty and they basically subtracted a guy and added the same guy back in the same trade. He has had a significant offseason to this point

I don't get this trade at all for Seattle. The starting pitchers swapped look the same and Sox get an elite bullpen arm also? Am I missing something or is this just a really bad trade for Seattle on paper?

People keep saying that Miley and Elias are the same pitcher, but I highly disagree with that. Miley has averaged 195 IP over the last 4 years. He's healthy, reliable, and a proven commodity. Just because Elias is also a mediocre lefty starter doesn't put him in the same class.

Carson Smith was the real value in this deal, he'll be a big asset moving forward.

That's Miley for you. A reliable, but mediocre pitcher.

10:32pm: The Red Sox were in talks on Chapman in November before learning about the incident through a background check, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports. Boston was exploring deals for both Chapman and Craig Kimbrel at the time, says Speier, and turned its attention exclusively toward the latter after finding out about the allegations.
DD went for the overpay on Kimbrel instead of the wife-beater.

The D’Backs, Dodgers, and Red Sox are staying in touch with the Braves regarding Miller, as Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets.
Maybe DD can pull off the deal.

Miley is replaceable from within. We needed a player like Carson Smith. Elias just provides another possible option. Dombrowski is filling obvious gaps that we had no one ready to fill. Great job.

I think Elias could be a lefty option and long man. But in actuality, his trade worth to the sox is likely higher than what he'll give you in production. This is the precursor of another deal. Move Miley for pen help and a trade chip.

Yup, I like this trade. The BP is looking much better.

I can see why Seattle fans are pissed.

Seattle better beef up their defense a little. Miley pitches to contact.

So I just noticed that Shelby Miller somehow went 6-17 last year.. Talk about s***** luck

It was uncanny that they never scored for him. I followed most of his starts over the second half of the season. He either achieved or challenged some mark for consecutive winless starts.

This is for you, Kimmi...

@PeteAbe

Of note: Jason Varitek was in the #RedSox suite as Dombrowski and Farrell spoke to reporters. He’s in the mix quite a bit.

This reminds me of the boys in our Boy Scout troop and their review of the food at a particular summer camp - 'it's terrible and they don't give us enough!'

The recreation of Mo Vaughn at Fenway.

If DD could make that swap it would solve alot of issues.

If that were to happen, the Red Sox would have the fattest corners in baseball, Prince and the Panda. It sounds like a situation comedy

It sure doesn't feel like the Red Sox are done. They have a lot of extraneous pieces, but I doubt they're enough to get the reliable starter they need.

Elias, Shaw, Hannigan, Barnes, Workman. Maybe Buchholz, Johnson or even Swihart/Owens could get moved. The Kimbrel trade will definitely hurt them in negotiations.
